    Can you share with us how you initially became interested in pursuing a career in law, particularly in the field of Intellectual Property?

    My inclination towards pursuing a career in law, particularly in Intellectual Property (IP) law developed through a combination of academic exposure, personal interests, and professional experiences.

    During my academic journey, while studying Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) as a subject, I was always fascinated by how innovation and creativity drive progress in various fields, and I became particularly interested in how these creations could be protected and leveraged legally.

    Moreover, my internship provided invaluable real-world exposure to IP issues. Engaging directly with trademark and copyright matters during this period not only equipped me with practical skills but also deepened my comprehension of the nuances of IP law.

    In essence, my foray into IP law has been shaped by a trifecta of academic intrigue, hands-on experience, and a personal ardour for innovation and creativity. IP law uniquely amalgamates these passions, offering a vibrant avenue to contribute meaningfully to diverse industries by ensuring rightful recognition and protection for creators and inventors.

    What were some of the pivotal moments or experiences during your early career that solidified your passion for Intellectual Property law?

    Having a good mentor during the nascent stage of one’s career is imperative, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had one.  I was grateful to have a brilliant mentor early on in my career, Mr. Vikrant Rana, whose guidance was instrumental in shaping my career path and deepening my passion for Intellectual Property law.

    Early on, I was entrusted with significant responsibilities, such as managing client portfolios and participating in strategic meetings. These experiences not only built my confidence but also reinforced my commitment to this field.

    Moreover, I actively participated in various international conferences, including INTA, AIPPI, and APPA, and served as a committee member for INTA in 2019 and the present term. These conferences provided me with the opportunity to interact with industry experts and brilliant legal minds from across the globe. Engaging with the broader IP community during these events expanded my horizons and ignited my enthusiasm for making meaningful contributions to the field.

    You’ve worked with a diverse range of clients over the past decade. Could you highlight some of the most challenging cases you’ve worked on and how you navigated them?

    Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of working with a diverse range of clients in various industries. This experience has exposed me to several challenging cases that required innovative thinking and strategic problem-solving.

    One particularly gratifying experience involved facilitating the seamless entry of a Fortune 500 company into the Indian market. This process was comprehensive and multifaceted, requiring meticulous due diligence to ensure a successful outcome. We began by conducting thorough market research to identify any potential conflicts with existing trademarks. This involved analyzing market trends, studying consumer behaviour, and assessing the competitive landscape to ensure our client’s brand would stand out without causing confusion.

    Central to this process was the meticulous avoidance of market confusion. Extensive trademark searches and evaluations were conducted to affirm the distinctiveness and legality of our client’s brand, thereby pre-empting any legal disputes that might arise from similarities with existing trademarks.

    A significant hurdle we encountered was navigating potential obstacles, notably third-party marks that could hinder our client’s market entry. To address this, we devised a strategic buy-out plan. We approached the holders of these third-party marks and successfully negotiated buy-out agreements, effectively removing any legal barriers and ensuring a clear path for our client’s brand.

    In another instance, I managed a trademark dispute for a pharmaceutical company. The challenge here was the potential market confusion due to the similarity of our client’s trademark with that of a competitor. To address this, we conducted extensive market research and gathered evidence to demonstrate the distinctiveness of our client’s brand. Also worked on negotiating a settlement that included coexistence agreements, allowing both parties to continue using their respective trademarks without consumer confusion. This not only resolved the dispute amicably but also preserved our client’s market position.

    In each of these cases, the key to navigating the challenges was a combination of deep technical knowledge, strategic legal thinking, and effective communication. Collaborating closely with clients to understand their needs and goals, leveraging expert insights, and maintaining a proactive and solution-oriented approach were crucial to achieving successful outcomes.

    Innovation and adaptability are crucial in the legal profession, especially in IP law. How do you stay ahead of the curve and ensure your strategies remain effective in a constantly evolving landscape?

    Innovation and adaptability are indeed crucial in the legal profession, particularly in the field of Intellectual Property (IP) law. I focus on several key areas:

    · Continuous Learning and Professional Development: Staying updated through conferences, webinars, advanced courses, and leading IP law journals.

    · Technological Proficiency: Embracing technology is essential in modern legal practice. I utilize advanced legal research tools and databases to conduct thorough and efficient research.

    · Networking and Collaboration: Engaging with IP professionals through associations and forums for knowledge sharing and best practices.

    · Client-Centric Approach: Understanding clients’ industries and anticipating their needs to tailor strategies and mitigate risks.

    · Emerging Trends: Keeping an eye on emerging trends is vital for staying ahead. For instance, with the rise of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, new IP challenges and opportunities are constantly arising. I invest time in understanding these technologies and their legal implications, ensuring that I can provide informed and forward-thinking advice to my clients.

    · Interdisciplinary Knowledge: IP law often intersects with other fields such as technology, business, and international law. I strive to broaden my knowledge base by studying related disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach allows me to address complex IP issues more effectively and to develop comprehensive strategies that consider various legal and business factors.

    · Strategic Thinking and Innovation: Lastly, I regularly brainstorm to develop creative solutions to challenging legal issues. I also conduct post-case reviews to identify areas for improvement and to refine strategies continuously.

    Can you describe a particular success story where your IP strategy significantly benefited a client? What were the key factors that led to this success?

    Recently, I was involved in a comprehensive worldwide due diligence for a client who was acquiring a company primarily based on its intellectual property (IP) assets. During this process, we uncovered a significant discrepancy – a large portion of the IP assets were found to be invalid, which had a profound impact on the agreed amount for the sale and purchase of these assets.

    The key factors that led to this success were thoroughness and diligence in conducting the due diligence process. We left no stone unturned in scrutinizing the IP portfolio of the target company, ensuring a meticulous examination of trademarks, copyrights, and other relevant IP assets across multiple jurisdictions.

    Additionally, effective communication with the client was crucial. We kept them informed at every stage of the due diligence, discussing findings promptly and transparently. This allowed the client to make well-informed decisions based on accurate information, mitigating potential risks and maximizing the value of their investment.

    Furthermore, our ability to adapt and strategize in response to unexpected findings played a pivotal role. Upon discovering the invalidity of a significant portion of the IP assets, we swiftly reevaluated the deal terms and renegotiated the purchase price, ensuring our client was protected from potential financial liabilities.

    This experience underscores the importance of conducting thorough due diligence in IP transactions. By meticulously assessing the quality and validity of IP assets, we were able to safeguard our client’s interests and ensure a successful outcome despite encountering unforeseen challenges.

    As an innovative thinker and adept communicator, how do you approach complex legal issues to make them understandable for your clients?

    As an innovative thinker and adept communicator, I use several key strategies to make complex legal issues understandable for my clients:

    · Simplifying Legal Jargon: I break down legal terminology into plain, everyday language to ensure clear and straightforward explanations.

    · Using Analogies and Examples: Employing relatable analogies and examples helps convey complex legal concepts in a more concrete and understandable manner.

    · Tailored Communication: I adapt my communication style to fit each client’s background and expertise, offering more straightforward explanations for those with less legal knowledge and deeper details for those with a legal or technical background.

    · Step-by-Step Explanations: I break down complex issues into manageable steps, walking clients through each phase of the legal process and clarifying the significance and implications of each step.

    · Active Listening and Engagement: I actively listen to clients’ concerns and questions, engaging in two-way dialogue to address confusion and ensure clients feel heard and understood.

    · Written Summaries and Follow-Ups: Providing written summaries of discussions and next steps reinforces understanding, and I encourage clients to review and ask follow-up questions to maintain clarity on progress.

    By combining these strategies, I ensure my clients understand their legal issues, feel confident, and make informed decisions. This approach builds trust and fosters a collaborative, transparent attorney-client relationship.

    You’ve held various positions, from Senior Associate to Associate Partner. How has your role evolved over the years, and what have been some of the key lessons you’ve learned along the way?

    In my career journey, I’ve seen significant role changes, progressing from Senior Associate to Associate Partner. This progression has been marked by a continuous pursuit of growth and learning, fuelled by my inherent love for hustling and the perpetual fire in my belly to improve every day. One of the key lessons I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability. As I moved up the ranks, I encountered diverse challenges that demanded flexible approaches and innovative solutions. Embracing change and being open to new ideas became essential traits that helped me navigate through various professional landscapes. Another vital lesson has been the significance of effective communication and relationship-building. As I assumed more leadership responsibilities, I realized the critical role that clear communication plays in fostering collaboration and driving success. Building strong relationships, both internally and externally, became instrumental in achieving organizational objectives and delivering value to clients.

    What advice would you give to fresh law graduates who are considering a specialization in Intellectual Property law?

    Begin by building a strong foundation in Intellectual Property (IP) law and understanding relevant statutes and regulations. Engage in networking opportunities, such as attending seminars and joining professional associations, to gain insights and advance your career. Seek practical experience through internships with IP law firms to gain hands-on exposure to real cases and client interactions.

    Lastly, stay curious and hungry in your learning journey, adapting to new technologies and trends to succeed in this dynamic and interdisciplinary field. By staying curious and continuously seeking opportunities to learn and grow, fresh law graduates can position themselves for success in this rewarding and intellectually stimulating area of law.

    Can you share what inspired you to pursue a career in law, particularly focusing on criminal law and white-collar crime?

    I would be honest to confess that law was not my first choice. Initially, I did not aspire to become a lawyer, considering the inherent expectations that come with being a second-generation lawyer. For all the years I was growing up, I had observed my Father from close quarters, putting his soul into the profession and it seemed overwhelming at that time. I also deeply admired all my teachers in school and realized the power of academics in shaping an individual’s life. Therefore, I was inclined towards being an educator and I started pursuing Bachelors in Commerce from Daulat Ram College, University of Delhi, thinking that would be my path. The course got me deeper insights into the ecosystem of commerce, and some of the subjects including contracts, commercial law, and taxation piqued my interest. With this new-found interest, law as a subject started pulling me towards it and after a discussion at home, I finally took the plunge to pursue law. You can say it was a ‘what you seek is also seeking you’ moment for me!

    During my tenure in law school, I developed a profound affinity for criminal law, a passion that led me to delve deeper into its various facets. The background in commerce had anyway sharpened my faculties in the field of economics and financial matters, which finally led to my focus gravitating towards white-collar crime. This was also the field where I could get the best mentor in my father who is renowned for his impeccable body of work in this area. I couldn’t have asked for more. So here I am, not where I thought I would be, but definitely where I am meant to be. Turns out, the unexpected detour into law was exactly what I needed.

    With such a diverse range of clients, including high-ranking officials and business ventures, could you elaborate on how you navigate the complexities of representing such varied interests in the legal realm?

    Building and maintaining trust across such a broad spectrum of clients requires more than just legal expertise; it demands a holistic understanding of their background, career trajectory, growth challenges, aspirations, and most importantly the circumstances in which they approach you. The law and its applicability will remain the same, what is differentiating factor in any particular case is the legal strategy, the court craft and the merit in your advocacy when you’re representing a client in the court of law. For me, each client mandate deserves its due attention because while we may be dealing with many clients, for clients we are the only one they have chosen over other service providers. Empathy, prioritization of clients’ needs and giving them an experience that addresses their concerns are the other important aspects that go beyond legal acumen. Effective communication and ethical integrity are other two areas where I would never compromise. All my clients are personally informed by me even for the smallest of updates. This is my way of showing them my respect and that they are not one more ‘case’ in our file. Ethical integrity comes from the moral compass that guides my decisions and actions.

    Your experience spans various aspects of litigation, from arguing cases to drafting legal documents. Could you highlight a particularly challenging case you’ve worked on and the strategies you employed to achieve a favourable outcome?

    I strongly believe that each and every case has its own unique challenges and nuances. However, in a significant case I handled alongside my team at Prosoll Law, a major challenge revolved around an alleged incriminating telephonic conversation crucial to the prosecution’s case. Recognizing the pivotal role of this evidence, we strategically devised a unique approach.

    We formulated a legal strategy focused on elevating crucial issues of law, particularly centered on the contested telephonic exchange. Anticipating the importance of the original call details, we proactively filed Criminal Miscellaneous Petitions before the High Court of Delhi after our initial application was rejected by the Trial Court.

    This helped us in identifying and capitalising on key opportunities. By framing the legal discourse around the need for the original call details, we not only highlighted the criticality of this evidence but also emphasised its potential impact on the case’s outcome.

    This matter always serves as a reminder to me of the importance of employing innovative and effective strategies to overcome challenges in crucial times.

    You’ve been recognized by several esteemed legal publications and platforms for your work in white-collar crime and criminal law. What do you believe sets your approach apart in this field?

    When we speak of white-collar crime and criminal law, I firmly believe that everyone deserves a chance to be represented vigorously and fairly. I approach each case with a deep-understanding of the facts of the case along with the fundamental principle in it. By doing so, I can effectively navigate the substantive as well as procedural aspects, while ensuring that my client’s interests are safeguarded. Our distinction lies in our consistent client base. As lawyers, our commitment is rooted in strong legal knowledge, staying updated with precedents, and honing courtroom skills. When our reputation spreads through word of mouth, our consistent clients truly set us apart.

    As an Associate Partner at Prosoll Law, you appear in matters before various judicial and quasi-judicial forums. Can you shed light on the differences in strategy when presenting cases before different courts or tribunals?

    Ultimately, successful litigation demands a dynamic and adaptable approach. When appearing before an appellate, a more formal and precedent-focused approach is often effective. In contrast, when appearing before quasi-judicial forums or specialized courts, a more technical and specialized strategy is required. These forums often deal with specific areas of law, such as tax, environmental, or administrative law, and demand an in-depth understanding of the subject matter. Curating arguments that align with the technicalities of the court’s jurisdiction and expertise can significantly enhance the case’s prospects.

    Given your involvement in high-profile cases, such as representing a former Chief Minister, could you discuss the unique challenges and responsibilities that come with representing public figures in legal matters?

    Representing public figures in legal matters, especially in high-profile cases, presents a unique set of challenges and responsibilities. While dealing with such cases, one has to maintain a fine balance between legal intricacies and public perception, like in the case you have mentioned about.

    One of the foremost challenges lies in mitigating reputational risks for our clients. Public figures often face intense scrutiny and media attention, which can potentially impact the free and fair investigation and may also adversely impact their public image. My philosophy has always been to primarily prioritize shielding our clients from sensationalism while concurrently formulating a robust defence strategy. This dual focus ensures that the legal proceedings remain the focal point, safeguarding our clients’ reputations from undue damage and media trial.

    In such cases, upholding fairness and justice becomes paramount. I recognize the importance of ensuring that our clients receive a fair trial and are not unduly influenced by external factors, be it media or public discourse

    You’ve co-authored articles on topics such as telephonic surveillance and the Prevention of Corruption Act. How do you balance your legal practice with scholarly pursuits, and how do these academic contributions inform your work?

    Balancing my legal practice with scholarly pursuits is a deliberate and symbiotic process. This dual commitment is not a mere juggling act; rather, it is a synergy that enhances both facets of my professional life. Writing and research are fundamental to a lawyer’s life. They not only sharpen the analytical bent of mind, but also help one in keeping their finger on the pulse of what’s happening. In legal practice, staying ahead requires more than courtroom acumen—it demands a continuous pursuit of knowledge. Writing articles allows me to delve deep into legal research and the evolution of law and its application that takes shape every day in our courts. This ensures that my understanding of the law and evolving jurisprudence remains not only current but also finely nuanced. Similarly, the daily rigours of my legal practice make my writing relevant, real and transfused with experience. Real-world experiences provide insights that add a practical point of view to theoretical frameworks. This infusion of my academic contributions with tangible and practical relevance adds weight to my writing. 

    Finally, what advice would you offer to law students or recent graduates who are embarking on their legal careers, particularly those interested in criminal law and litigation?

    In the realm of legal careers, particularly for those venturing into criminal law and litigation, my foremost advice would be to understand that – there are no shortcuts. Perseverance coupled with merit is the key. The second important aspect is to break the barriers, myths and stereotypes like ‘criminal law is not for women’, As I reflect on my own journey, resilience and grit became my compass as I chose the less trodden path of criminal law. To aspiring students, I emphasize the importance of listening to their true calling. Only when you make your field your primary interest, will you be able to focus on the path to mastery.. With the end-goal in mind, every action becomes a calculated step towards success.

    Sir, could you please share the story of how you initially decided to pursue a career in law? Were there specific experiences or influences that led you to choose this path? 

    First of all, I am a second generation lawyer. I was motivated to pursue law from the beginning as Law is a noble profession and contributes a lot to society. Since my childhood, I have seen my Father’s contribution towards society as his core practice area was Criminal Law. However, during my college days, I was much inclined to pursue my career in the stock market being financially connected which goes to my core passion. Simultaneously, I was pursuing Law and finally, I decided to shift myself to Law especially in Commercial matters, which is a mixed bag of finance and commerce. I, then, shifted to Delhi.

    With almost 12 years of experience across litigation, commercial arbitration, and consumer and company litigation, what motivated you to specialize in these specific areas within the legal field? 

    I am passionate to read and learn more and more deep into financial activities related to business and commerce. This interest connects me with the litigation and enlightens me to understand the problem of a businessman in a much better way, which ultimately led to making a business decision. Law can be practiced by anyone but having basic knowledge over the general subject of the case either commercial, arbitration or consumer or company makes things easier to resolve the query in an effective way. Like an Advocate having understanding of stock market would be able to pursue a case related to stock market than a novice. Since I have interest in reading these topics, I was more inclined to specialise in the above specific areas in the legal field, so that I can deliver better than ordinary. 

    Your career includes appearances before various High Courts, the Supreme Court of India, and various tribunals. Can you highlight a particularly challenging case you’ve worked on and discuss the strategies you employed to navigate through it successfully? 

    It was in Sep’ 2014, when I caught up in a matter before Hon’ble Supreme Court. I briefed a Senior Advocate, however, he was stuck in a traffic jam and could not make it on time. I was called upon by the Bench to argue. With hesitation, I began and strenuously argued the matter. When I finished my arguments, my Senior reached the Court. However, by that time, the Hon’ble Court reserved the matter for order. The judgement was delivered in the month of March’ 2015 and finally, we succeeded. This case taught me to always be ready with the brief irrespective of engaging a Senior Advocate. I have fearlessly appeared before almost 11 High Courts of the country and numerous District Courts and Tribunals across the country and independently argue the matters. This rich experience and exposure are completely devoted to my Senior Colleague Mr. Ajay Abhay Monga Advocate, who always reposed faith on my skills and offered opportunity as and when it appeared.  

    Given your expertise in Consumer Laws, Commercial Law, and other areas, how do you stay abreast of the ever-evolving legal landscape, especially with regards to amendments and changes in laws and regulations? 

    In the current scenario, especially the deep presence of online updates and platforms, it becomes easy to keep updated. However, specific laws get evolved as and when I work upon a case file. I must state that sitting in Court, in idle time, is indeed a good way of learning and keeping updated, apart from learning argumentative skills and to have a broad idea about the temperament of a Judge.

    You’ve been associated with significant reported judgments, such as Millennium Wires vs. The State Trading Corporation of India. Can you share the role you played in these cases and the impact they had on your legal career? 

    As explained to you above, the case you highlighted was a game changer for me as it was an opportunity to independently argue a case before the Hon’ble Supreme Court in addition to the fact that many stakes were involved. I was quite nervous in the beginning, however, after the hearing concluded, I felt immensely satisfied with my performance and it boosted my confidence to argue a case before any Court. I was involved in the above case since it was before the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi, therefore, I had good command over the facts and coupled with the fact that I briefed the Senior Advocate for hearing, so I was quite prepared with the case. The preparation, briefing and discussion with Senior and deep involvement in the case since inception, in fact, gave power and confidence to present the case independently.

    Having worked on matters related to FEMA, PMLA, and other financial regulations, how do you approach advising senior management on the legal implications of business decisions, particularly in the context of financial laws? 

    Advising on the legal implications of financial laws certainly depends upon the kind of business my client is involved in coupled with their requirements. Those days are gone by, where businesses can flourish without legal support. Presently, the laws are quite stringent, which require legal advice at every stage of business decisions. Therefore, after understanding the business model and the requirements of a particular trade, I would advise my Client in making its business decisions in line with the financial laws.

    From being an Associate to now being an Associate Partner at SNG & Partners, can you discuss the key milestones and challenges you faced in your career progression? 

    I belong to Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh and shifted myself to Delhi in Sep’ 2011 to pursue my career in law. Since, I was not much active during my college days, therefore, I was completely raw, when in fact, I entered the profession. I initially practiced with some Advocate for a period of 4 months and thereafter, I began my career with SNG & Partners in March’ 2012. Our Managing Partner, Mr. Sanjay Gupta is a kind-hearted and a great mentor, who always encourages the juniors. In the beginning, rushing from one Court to another gave me an exposure to a variety of laws. I was working under Mr. Ajay Abhay Monga, Senior Partner, who gave me ample opportunities to argue the matter independently. Later on, he handed over the outstation cases portfolio to me, which added more exposure in my experience. Travelling to various Courts is per-se add a great value, however, arguing a matter before another Court, apart from your regular Court, adds more experience and sharpens the argumentative skills. Travelling to different Courts gives independence as well as enhances decision making without the support of your colleagues. It also helps you to understand the local practices of various Courts. I must add that there are no free lunches anywhere and the same goes with different Courts in different states. You will face challenges like language barriers as all the Courts in this country are not following English as their base language but these exposures not only add experience but also shape an Advocate to argue a matter in challenging circumstances as well. My journey with SNG is full of challenges in each case, however these challenges make an Advocate. I am always thankful to my Seniors for always appreciating my work and finding me suitable for new challenges. A special regard to Mr. Monga, who has been a great mentor for me and guided me in my hard times and always motivated me.

    As someone with a rich and varied legal career, what advice would you give to fresh law graduates who are just entering the legal profession? What key lessons have you learned along the way that you would like to share with them? 

    A law graduate must understand that law is a learning process, which would never end. Therefore, reading and understanding the law and its implications are essential. Like practice makes a man perfect, similarly, the more you read, the more you gain. Law graduates, during the initial days, must visit Court everyday and observe the Advocates arguing their cases and the kind of questions raised by the Benches. This will make them understand how the case is presented. You can make notes and read the file thoroughly, however, there are certain spontaneous questions, which would arise and those questions can be answered, only with your general acumen. A law graduate must not refrain from reading the topics, which are not necessary for the kind of legal practice he/she is involved in. He/She must understand that presenting a case before the Court is an art crafted by an Advocate. Thus, every advocate has a different way of presenting the case. Thus, the argumentative skills can only be learnt, when you hear and listen in a Courtroom. I wish All the Best to all the Law graduates.

    How did you end up pursuing a career in law, and what inspired you to specialize in corporate and commercial law, M&A, joint ventures, private equity, exchange control and foreign investment?

    I completed my schooling from a very small town, Bokaro in Jharkhand. I was a science student until my 12th Board, however, I did not find interest in continuing with science and was hoping to change my stream. I started applying for journalism courses in Delhi and thought that this career path is the most suitable for me. I came to know about National Law Schools through my brother and decided to explore both journalism as well as law. I got selected for both, however decided to opt for law.

    I was selected for an internship in 2011 with DH Law (which merged its practices with Link Legal in 2016). During this internship, I worked on a lot of assignments relating to M&A, joint ventures and researched a lot on companies, businesses and regulatory issues. This created a vast interest in continuing in the same field and I was fortunate to receive a job offer from DH Law, Mumbai, post completion of my B.A. LL.B.(Hons.) in 2012. While I was ready to start my career in any given practice area, I found interest in this particular area after I was involved in all the stages of an acquisition deal in 2013. Thereafter, I decided to continue this area of practice.

    Can you walk us through your experience working as an Associate at DH Law Associates and Senior Associate at Link Legal, Mumbai? What were some of the challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?

    I started with DH Law as an Associate in 2012. It was a smaller set up with great mentors. I had an opportunity to work on various assignments including deals, international arbitration, litigation as well as advisory. The challenge at the initial stage was to learn by yourself and deliver in time. As a fresh graduate, who had no experience of even an internship in a bigger law firm, the major challenge was to meet the quality of deliverables with market standards. With the guidance of the partners of DH Law coupled with my own passion and hard work, I think I was able to meet the required deliverables. Once a law student is required to work as a qualified lawyer, the main challenge is to understand the right issue involved in any assignment. Framing of the right issue is challenging initially, however, if you learn that art, you will succeed in profession.

    DH Law merged its practices with Link Legal in 2016 and I also became a part of Link Legal and worked as a Senior Associate. The main challenge of a Senior Associate is to own the assignment, lead the transaction and simultaneously start training the juniors in the team. Delegation is the key when you take up major responsibilities. There are always late working hours depending upon the work load, however, you need to put that extra effort and concentrate on your value addition on the entire transaction.  

    As the Deputy General Manager (Legal) at Lodha Group, how did you manage to handle the legal responsibilities for one of India’s largest real estate developers? What were some of the significant projects you worked on, and how did you add value to the company?

    The decision to move to Lodha Group came after a lot of thought where I wished to experience the challenges of an in-house counsel. I would say that the legal team in Lodha Group consisted of one of the bests lawyers whose professional approach was top notch. As an in-house counsel there are several challenges with more accountability on whatever you advise and strategies for the company. Lodha Group is one of the largest developers and were in the phase of expansion which required a lot of investments, joint ventures and commercial arrangements with big real estate funds, investors and banks. During my time at Lodha Group, I worked on assignments including setting up of infrastructure park, structured financing deals, debt investment assignments and joint ventures on regular basis. I think my transactional experience working with DH Law and Link Legal helped me to add value in these transactions and achieve the objectives of my team in timely manner.

    You have been recognized among the top individual lawyers for corporate and commercial law in the Forbes India Legal Power List 2021. How did you achieve this recognition, and what advice would you give to young lawyers aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

    I felt delighted and humbled after being recognized by Forbes India amongst the top lawyers (less than 10 years’ experience).  There was no planning to achieve this, frankly, it happened due to the visibility and experience you gain in the market. The client’s feedback is of utmost importance in any feet you achieve. Post this recognition, in 2022, I have also been named as a ‘Future Legal Leader’ by India Business Law Journal and as a ‘next generation partner’ by Legal 500. All these recognitions come only when you are recommended by your clients which means that you have to give your hundred percent on whatever assignments you are working on. A piece of advice to the younger lawyers would be to focus on quality of your deliverables and automatically your visibility and client recommendations will increase.  

    Can you describe your role as an Associate Partner at Link Legal, Mumbai, and the most exciting projects you have worked on in this capacity?

    As an Associate Partner at Link Legal, Mumbai, my role is to work as a leader of assignments within the team, be responsible for client deliverables, business development, managing your resources and work allocation. Some of the exciting transactions that I have worked in this capacity are –

    • Advised Auctus Advisors and its shareholders on its acquisition by YCP Solidiance International, a subsidiary of YCP Holdings, which is a company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
    • Advised JSW Foundation in setting up of the Skill India Impact Bond, a first of its kind and India’s largest impact bond, launched by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). The other funding members of the SIIB includes, British Asian Trust, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, HSBC India and Dubai Cares, with FCDO (UK Government) & USAID as technical partners.
    • Advised Doncasters Group of Companies in relation to the Indian element of its global acquisition of Uni-Pol Group of Companies.
    • Advised Howen International Fund SPC, a Cayman Island fund, in its pre-series A investment in Sundaravijayam Automobiles Services Private Limited (known as Ready Assist).
    • Advised Almas Global Opportunity Fund SPC, a Cayman Islands based fund, in its investment of approximately USD 4 (Four) Million through primary and secondary investment in Jupitice Justice Technologies Private Limited, a justice technology company based in Chandigarh, India.

    How do you keep up with the constantly evolving legal landscape, and what resources do you rely on to stay informed about the latest developments in your field?

    There are several ways to keep yourself updated. The first and foremost is to read the newspapers every morning. Newspapers capturing the business updates are very crucial and reading articles provides you with the sectoral knowledge and the relevant updates. As a transactional lawyer, you need to religiously start your day by visiting three important websites of the regulators – Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Securities and Exchange Board of India and The Reserve Bank of India. This habit will keep you updated in this constantly evolving legal landscape.

    What advice would you give to the young professionals who are at the struggling phase of their respective careers?

    It is important for young professional in this field to learn as much as they can and develop their skills as a lawyer. We all lawyers are fortunate that ‘skill’ is paramount and most valuable factor to be successful and survive in the legal industry. This is a knowledge-based industry and if you have the knowledge, you will keep getting the work and keep growing in the legal industry, irrespective of your personal/professional background.

    To start the conversation, please tell us about your decision to pursue law. You graduated with an Honours in Economics. What made you choose the legal profession?

    Pursuing law was somewhat of a passive decision. My grandfather and uncle were both Senior Advocates of the Supreme Court. Although I did not have much first-hand exposure to the profession with them, given that law runs in the family, it was always in the mix for me. So when I completed my Economics degree and was considering my next move, naturally, law was one of the options. My father nudged me to enrol at the Faculty of Law at Delhi University and that was that.   

    What drew you to corporate law instead of litigation?

    I did intern with a few litigation chambers but most of my time was spent with corporate firms, the longest stint being at Phoenix Legal. I was instantly drawn to the extremely professional set up of the firm and the finesse and sophistication with which the firm’s lawyers were able to advise businesses. I was also fascinated by how corporate law allows you to have an insight into the entire workings of a business. A corporate lawyer plays a key role in advising a business through its entire life cycle – from setting up, operationalizing and carrying on day-to-day activities to shutting shop.

    You have been with Phoenix Legal since you started practising and have risen up the ranks at the Firm. You have also earned accolades from global ranking agencies. According to you, what does it take to make a successful corporate lawyer?

    I have been rather fortunate, having had the right guidance, exposure and support from my colleagues and clients and I think these factors go a long way in shaping the career of a young  lawyer. Having said that, the usual ingredients of hard work, focus and dedication are pre-requisites in our professional without a doubt. Clients expect their lawyers to be professional, responsible and reliable. The journey can be a grueling one and so it is important to hold on to something that keeps you driven and motivated. This could be anything – a knack for problem solving, a competitive streak or something else.

    How important is it for young lawyers to have a mentor to guide them and look up to?

    Extremely. I have been privileged to have been surrounded by accomplished and well-rounded professionals from the start of my career and have drawn guidance and inspiration from them. So personally, I feel a great sense of responsibility towards training and mentoring younger lawyers. In my view, this is key to building a strong ecosystem and a successful corporate practice. A young lawyer’s formative years can be gruelling and it is important for them to have the right guidance. I believe it is also important for leaders and senior lawyers to build an EQ. Something that is surprisingly uncommon in our profession.

    You have diverse experience in different areas of corporate laws. What are your thoughts on the generalist vs. specialist debate?

    Given the pace at which the legal and regulatory environment is evolving in our country, the specialist lawyer undeniably has relevance today. But for me personally, being a generalist has been what I enjoy most about my practice and I’ve been fortunate enough to have had that exposure from ground zero. From advising on an M&A deal one day to dealing with a tax or regulatory proceeding the next, it keeps me on my toes. I am constantly exposed to new areas and issues of law which I feel has given me a well-rounded perspective. I feel that clients do see value in a professional who is able to provide a holistic take on a business problem.

    What do you find most rewarding about your work?

    The satisfaction that comes with resolving a business problem for a client. This could involve something as big as achieving a successful outcome in an M&A transaction or legal proceeding or something as small as providing a clear response to a client’s query.


    Where do you think the practice of corporate and commercial law is headed in the years to come? How do you see things evolving?

    I think legal as a function is being viewed more and more by businesses as a business-enabler rather than a cost centre. There is a flurry of regulatory activity across the country and businesses are more compliance conscious than ever before. In-house legal teams have grown in size and are increasingly active. AI and legal tech already has heads turning and will undeniably make an impact. At a macro level, I feel that a lot of the inefficiency that exists in the system will be weeded out. My sense is that clients and businesses will tend to look more for strategic and high-level advice and corporate advisory as a practice will grow. This brings a big smile to the face of a corporate advisory lawyer like me.

    As a corporate lawyer in private practice, you must have a busy schedule. Please tell us how you maintain a work life balance. 

    That’s simple – I don’t ! But on a serious note, ‘pockets of time’ has been my mantra. You will often hear me throwing around this term with a younger lot of lawyers. As corporate lawyers, we are constantly struggling to find the right balance. I feel that both during the busy phases and lighter ones, it is important to find and utilize those pockets of time, however fleeting they may be, to recharge. What works best for me is listening to music, playing the guitar, taking time out for a run or spending time with my family. With a bit of planning, efficiency and a supportive team, this is achievable in most situations.

    Finally, what advice do you have for our audience of young lawyers eager to make careers in corporate law?

    Take ownership of your work. Deal with every task as if you alone are responsible for it. Think like a Partner from day one. This is one the best pieces of advice I’ve received. My own two bits you ask? Work hard but also work smart. You will deal with a variety of clients and colleagues and different things will make them tick. Be adaptable and perceptive.

    Why did you pursue LLB after MBA-Marketing?

    A lot of what happens in our life is because of going with the flow. There were forces around me which pushed me towards law. I finished my MBA during the subprime crisis and had a few friends who were UPSC aspirants, and we used to have enriching discussions around laws, governance, economics, policy, management, international business, and regulatory environment etc.

    Law interested me and I decided to appear for University of Delhi’s Law Entrance Exam without any pressure in my head as I had already secured a PPO from Confederation of Indian Industry after my MBA-internship there. That year most of the law entrance exam was focussed on current affairs and I did not know those socialisations with friends will help me clear the entrance exam.

    You got a job at a Band 1 firm as a professional support lawyer, but you choose law practice development as career?

    I had a good 4 year long and successful stint with industry chambers early in my career. I was fortunate to get international exposure as well. A friend referred my CV for the opening as a Professional Support Lawyer in a renowned law firm and I got an opportunity to work on competition law matters with the finest minds in the country.

    I had thoroughly enjoyed my work in FICCI which involved a lot of marketing-communication, events, writing, and media relations but soon I realised that I was not enjoying being the “lawyer”.

    My heart wanted to pursue a career in management of business of law. Then I got this opportunity with Singhania & Partners which resonated with me and was a perfect opening aligning with my education background (MBA & LL.B.) , interests in communication management, and experience.

    Tell us something about Singhania & Partners and your role as Head- Practice Development at the law firm.

    Singhania & Partners is a full-service law firm and is one of the best places to work. We are recommended in the area of Corporate-M&A, Arbitration & Litigation, Employment Law, Banking and Finance etc. Over the years firm has established itself as an expert in construction disputes and infrastructure sector.  

    I joined the firm as Practice Development Manager in 2015 and was managing communications. Soon after that Mr. Ravi Singhania, Managing Partner entrusted me with implementing his vision which was to ensure that quality and correct legal content should reach information seekers through digital means. Later on, I also led the digital transformation within the organization which is still a work in progress. Over the years my role has expanded to include campus outreach and internships management as well besides other strategic practice development initiatives of the firm.

    What is your two cents of advice for other similar organizations planning digital transformation?

    Having a vision on the objectives of digitisation is an absolute must for driving the digital strategy and creating a digital ecosystem for growth driven firms. No organization would regret investing in technology, each organization is on a different learning curve and systems and processes will continue to improve once we are on this journey. Sooner you start the better it is.

    However, it is must to have a clarity on the objectives of digitisation. For instance, one should know whether through digitisation we are trying to improve marketing and client outreach or reduce duplicity of efforts in matters management, HR process improvement or internal records management or creating a digital ecosystem.

    Lastly, whatever is the objective of investing in technology make sure you click with the service provider. Service provider is as important as the software you are purchasing. Interview and assess the delivery team assigned to you. Make sure that the implementation team is committed, has shown the stability with the company and have genuine interest in understanding your business and its people. Document minutest of details, work on end user feedback, improvise, and check progress regularly.

    Why it has become strategically important to have a practice development department for growth oriented firms?

    We are living in information age; organizations must invest in ensuring that the right communication about their expertise and services reaches to information seeker. Practice development department bridges this gap and play an important role in ensuring visibility across social media, reputation management, and website management through knowledge management of the firm.

    They help create right internal and external communication to create a cohesive experience, and unified message for the prospective customers, prospective employees, internal and external stakeholders, and clients across all digital and physical platforms.

    They do so through various means such as informative content dissemination to demonstrate the firm’s expertise, managing submissions to legal directories, maintaining a record of the firm’s engagement, and facilitating conversations between fee-earners and service seekers.

    There are a lot of start-ups around law practice development consulting. Do you see law firms outsourcing this work to these start-ups?

     Yes, there are a lot of start-ups around practice development consulting of law firm. This is a growing area. However, in my opinion, no outsider can do much to assist in practice development till the firm leaders do not have the buy-in of fee-earners. Planning and execution are two sides of the same coin, the consultants might give good suggestions and plan for you but there is more to it than meet the eyes and at the end execution of these initiatives cannot happen without the involvement of internal stakeholders. If your internal team/ fee-earners are not aligned with you in meeting the practice development objectives consultants won’t be able to deliver much. Those who will be able to bridge the gap between planning and execution will survive and flourish.

    What advice would you give to someone considering a career in the legal field?

    I would recommend aspiring lawyers to do as many internships as possible and take exposure in different practice areas. Even if you have decided on practice area for you, I would recommend that lawyers should do internships in other practice areas as well to develop a holistic perspective.

    I strongly advocate that law students must do internship in the practice development departments of the law firms, and it becomes even more important if they want to establish their own practice after finishing their law degree.
