    Your academic credentials span law, commerce, business, and company secretaryship, culminating in a Ph.D. in Law. How has this multidisciplinary education shaped your approach to legal practice, especially at the intersection of law, business, and corporate governance?

    From the very first day of my law school, I carried a clear ambition to become a world-class corporate lawyer being inspired by Jim Carrey’s story, who wrote himself a $10 million check for “acting services rendered” and carried it as a reminder of his vision and by the mid-1990s fulfilled that vision through belief and intense hard-work. Motivated by this, I wrote my own paper slip in 2010 to myself; “Dr. Milap Chopra (Gold Medallist), B.Com., LL.B. (Hons), CS, MBA, LL.M., Ph.D.” and carried it in my wallet as a visualization and constant reminder of my ambition to become a world-class corporate lawyer. With that goal in mind, I carefully structured my academic and professional journey. Alongside my law degree, I pursued the Company Secretaryship (CS) course, completing both simultaneously to strengthen my understanding of corporate law and governance. I interned at India’s leading-top law firms including Amarchand, JSA, AZB, Anand & Anand, among others, gaining exposure to top-tier corporate practice across the metro cities. Throughout the academic journey of law school, I consistently maintained meritorious performance, ultimately graduating as the Gold Medallist and batch topper of Institute of Law, Nirma University.

    Yet destiny had a different plan. During the last semester of law school, my father, himself a practicing lawyer at the Bikaner Sessions Court, was elected as the First Citizen of Bikaner i.e., the Mayor of the city. He encouraged me not to take up a corporate job or join a law firm, but to pursue litigation. Respecting his guidance, I set aside the offers of a job I had received and began practice at the Rajasthan High Court, Jodhpur, as an associate in the chambers of Shri Mahendra Singh Singhvi, Senior Advocate. That experience was not just training or learning; it was an immersion into the craft of litigation, teaching me the temperament, discipline, and holistic approach required for meaningful legal practice. I am deeply thankful to God for that turn of events, because it helped me realise that true legal practice requires temperament and an inbuilt nature — qualities essential for anyone who wishes to pursue litigation meaningfully. Law is not just a profession; it is a noble calling. It remains unique in its ability to serve the public interest at large, where one’s work can directly benefit society through precedents, judgments, and observations/outcomes.

    After starting practice at the Rajasthan High Court, Jodhpur, I enrolled for Masters in Law at the prestigious Government Law College, Bikaner. This required remarkable dedication as in the first year, I travelled overnight every Tuesday from Jodhpur to Bikaner to give my six exams of the first year on every Wednesday; however, destiny had other pivotal moments as well, a life-threatening road-accident during that period became a blessing in disguise which forced me to pause and reflect, doctors advised me to pursue a desk job, and for a short while, my unfulfilled corporate dream seemed to materialize and I got the opportunity to work with the PwC at Gurugram, one of the world’s Big Four Consultancy firms wherein I soon realised I was not made for the corporate world. My temperament fit litigation, not a corporate desk. During my PwC days, I also pursued an MBA, completing it under tough circumstances, often writing three back-to-back exams of three hours each on weekends, as leave was nearly impossible in corporate life. That job experience further strengthened my resolve to practice at Jodhpur and added yet another dimension to my academic journey.

    Through it all, one firm belief and that paper slip has always guided me that extra qualifications add extra dimensions to one’s legal career. That conviction drove me to explore law, commerce, business, and company secretaryship, before finally pursuing a Ph.D. in Law. Today, this multidisciplinary foundation allows me to approach issues at the intersection of law, business, and corporate governance with a rare balance- offering solutions that are legally sound, commercially viable, & ethically responsible. And, finally, in July 2024, after 15 long years of academic and career journey, I added the “Dr.” prefix to my name, completing the journey I had envisioned on that first day of law school on a slip of paper. Through belief, conviction, hard work, and the courage to dream, every challenge i.e., exams, travel, job, courtroom battles, became part of the story. That slip was never just a piece of paper; it was a promise to myself, a compass that guided me to become the well-qualified lawyer I aspired to be, and a reminder that dreams nurtured with patience and perseverance truly come alive and I hope that anyone who reads this feels inspired to keep their own slips of hope alive.

    Pursuing CS and Law simultaneously is both ambitious and demanding. What advice would you offer to students who are considering this path? Are there any specific strategies or resources that helped you manage both effectively and could benefit others looking to do the same?

    Pursuing Company Secretaryship alongside a law degree is ambitious and demanding, but immensely rewarding if approached with purpose and discipline. From the very start of my law school, I aligned every step i.e., internships, academics, and extra qualifications with my goal of becoming a world-class corporate lawyer.

    My advice would be to treat both the programs as complementary, not competing. Law builds your legal reasoning and litigation skills; CS gives deep insight into corporate governance, compliance, and business operations. Today, modern litigation often involves complex corporate matters, and understanding both legal and corporate dimensions allows a lawyer to craft strategic, holistic solutions.

    Ultimately, my journey shows that combining CS and law not only prepares you for corporate practice but also enriches litigation skills. A modern litigating lawyer increasingly needs to understand business structures, governance frameworks, and compliance requirements to provide nuanced advice, anticipate challenges, and craft effective legal strategies. For students willing to embrace the challenge, the payoff is a multidisciplinary foundation that sets them apart and equips them to thrive in both courtroom and corporate boardroom settings.

    In your role as Deputy Government Counsel for Rajasthan, you’ve managed cases across diverse departments like Transport, Tourism, and Water Resources. Could you share a particularly challenging case or policy issue you handled, and how you approached its legal complexities?

    As Deputy Government Counsel for Rajasthan, one of the most challenging aspects has been handling cases that cut across diverse departments, from Transport and Tourism to Water Resources, Higher and Medical Education. Each case brings its own legal complexity, but the real challenge often lies in creating a channel of cooperation among multiple officers in charge of different departments and ensuring that a timely, coherent reply is filed before the Hon’ble Court. Unlike private practice, here you appear from the respondent’s side, where the responsibility is not only to defend but also to uphold the policies and decisions of the State.

    In matters like appointments, recruitments, examinations, policy changes, or large bunch-transfer cases, the pressure can be immense because of the far-reaching implications for both the government and the public at large. That is why I believe success depends on three things: having a good team of associates, valuing the effectiveness of court clerks or munshi’s, and maintaining proper updation of files and continuous monitoring of case status. These seemingly small practices are actually the backbone of timely and effective representation before the Court.

    My multidisciplinary background in law, commerce, business, & corporate governance has helped me approach these issues with a structured, solution-oriented mindset. Rather than being daunted by the complexity, I focus on building cooperation, managing deadlines under pressure, and ensuring that the State’s position is presented in a legally sound, precise, and persuasive manner. In many ways, these challenges mirror the lessons I’ve carried since law school that discipline, teamwork, and a holistic outlook are key to navigating the most demanding cases.

    What inspired you to establish Law Compass LLP? What were some of the early challenges you faced in building the firm, and what long-term vision do you hold for its role in the Indian legal ecosystem?

    The inspiration to establish Law Compass LLP came from my belief that the legal profession is not only about advocacy but about navigating people toward the best possible solutions. That’s why our firm carries the tagline: “Navigating you to the best possible legal solution.” As a co-founder, along with my Jaipur-based partner, Pranjal Singh, and our Delhi-based partner Siddharth Acharya, Advocate-on-Record, we envisioned a practice that offers clients both litigation and non-litigation expertise under one roof. Our diverse backgrounds allowed us to position Law Compass LLP as a one-stop solution for multifaceted client needs.

    The early challenges were the ones most young firms face i.e., building trust, managing resources, and delivering consistent results while ensuring timely compliance. But my multidisciplinary journey, coupled with our team’s strength in corporate law, governance, and litigation, gave us the foundation to bridge gaps effectively. We worked consciously on building a system that valued teamwork, proper updation of files, responsiveness, and a client-first approach, even under the extreme pressures that litigation often brings.

    What sets us apart is our functioning model. We focus not just on winning cases but on ensuring effective, time-bound relief, transparent communication, and value-driven fee structures. Like the big law firms in India, we are building a culture of professionalism, research-oriented strategy, and holistic solutions, but our boutique size allows us to remain nimble, personalized, and accessible. In this way, we hope to complement the Indian legal system by reducing delays, improving efficiency, and delivering justice in a way that clients find both approachable and dependable.

    Our long-term vision is to make a meaningful difference in the Indian legal ecosystem by providing solutions that are legally sound, commercially practical, and socially responsible. We aspire for Law Compass LLP to grow into a boutique firm that is known not only for legal excellence but also for its role in strengthening trust in the system itself — making the law work better for those it is meant to serve.

    You’ve represented a wide range of clients from banks and PSUs to co-operative societies and educational institutions. When handling government-related matters, what unique challenges arise, and how do you tailor your strategy to ensure effective and compliant representation?

    When it comes to government-related matters, the challenges are very different from private representation. The most unique difficulty lies in the volume of cases and the strict timelines within which replies and arguments must be prepared. The pendency of cases directly impacts the smooth functioning of governance, so the responsibility of a government counsel is not only professional but also systemic.

    To handle this, I firmly believe in the strength of a structured ecosystem which includes an effective court clerk/munshi, a reliable team of associates, regular updation of files, complete coordination with the OIC’s and constant monitoring of case status. Every stage i.e., from gathering factual reports, to preparing replies, to filing in the registry, to finally arguing with a well-prepared note ensuring that no matter goes unheard before the Hon’ble Court. For this, the cause list has to be noted with precision every single day, and it is the duty of a government counsel to make sure that not a single case is missed being represented. Even one lapse can have serious consequences for governance and public interest. Without that structure, government litigation can easily get derailed under its own weight.

    Fortunately, under the able leadership of our Hon’ble Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma ji, the State of Rajasthan has made government-side litigation comparatively smoother and more systematic. We regularly hold meetings with the Officers-in-Charge (OICs) to review pendencies, address bottlenecks, and ensure that the State’s representation before the Hon’ble Rajasthan High Court is effective and timely. This cooperation between counsel and departments allows us to tailor our strategy in a way that is both compliant and efficient, ensuring that justice is not delayed for the people we ultimately serve.

    With such a strong academic foundation, do you believe that continuous scholarly engagement should be a part of every legal professional’s journey? How has your own academic work enriched your practice?

    Absolutely. On the very first day of my law school orientation, Senior Advocate Shri P.M. Thakkar told us that “a lawyer is always a student” that one must remain in constant learning mode, curious to know the “why” and committed to finding solutions through knowledge. That message struck me deeply. Inspired also by Jim Carrey’s story, I wrote on that slip of paper (which I have carried since my first semester) that I would remain a learner till the last day of my life.

    That conviction has shaped my journey. Even after completing my Ph.D. in Law, I regularly enroll in online courses, workshops, and other academic engagements. Today, my scholarly pursuits have come full circle, I now travel across institutions to deliver lectures, judge moot court competitions, and being a government counsel participate in government meetings and each of these experiences further refines my practice.

    For me, scholarship and practice are not separate but complementary. Continuous learning sharpens my arguments, broadens my perspective, and keeps me adaptable in a fast-changing legal landscape. In essence, my academic work has not only enriched my practice but also kept me aligned with the belief that law is a living discipline and to practice it meaningfully, one must always be willing to learn, unlearn, and relearn.

    Balancing a high-pressure legal practice with deep engagement in social leadership roles such as Founding Trustee of BEST Foundation Trust, Vice Chairman of JITO Youth Wing etc. is no small feat. How do you manage this balance, and what continues to motivate your commitment to social transformation alongside your legal career?

    Balancing law with social leadership has never felt like a burden; it has always been a calling. Two incidents, in particular, have shaped this approach for me.

    The first comes from my political legacy. My father, a deeply honest politician, always taught us that if society has given us everything, we must find ways to give back. That value has been a guiding principle in my life. With this conviction, I founded the BEST Foundation Trust “Better Education for Social Transformation”. Through this initiative, we work to make education accessible and meaningful by paying the school fees of underprivileged students, providing scholarships to meritorious ones, and creating opportunities for educational growth etc.

    The second defining moment was far more personal. During a life-threatening road accident, I was in a coma for 67 hours, and I lost a dear friend in that tragedy. That experience shook me and instilled a deep realization that we only have one life and the only way to honor it is by living with purpose & making a positive difference in society.

    So, even while managing the pressures of a legal practice, I consciously dedicate time and energy to social causes, supported by an effective team. What keeps me motivated is the belief that law and leadership must go hand in hand, one upholds justice in the courtroom, the other nurtures transformation in the community.

    You’ve been actively involved in initiatives focused on youth empowerment and educational access. What advice would you offer to aspiring legal professionals who wish to follow a path like yours? What mindset and resources do you believe are essential for building a meaningful legal career today?

    My advice to aspiring legal professionals is simple yet profound; always stay curious, always stay disciplined, and never forget to ask yourself the basic question: “Why Me?”

    Whether you are arguing before My Lords, preparing for a job interview, or even praying to God to fulfill your dreams, just pause and ask, why should this relief, this opportunity, or this blessing come to me? If you can honestly satisfy yourself with an answer, if you have worked hard enough to justify it, then trust me — it will be you.

    In my own journey, this mindset has been a compass. From managing rigorous studies in law, CS, MBA, LL.M. and Ph.D., to working with top firms, to practicing in court, to representing the State of Rajasthan as Government Counsel and even balancing social leadership, the “Why Me?” principle has kept me grounded and accountable. It pushes you to prepare better, to think deeper, and to act with integrity.

    So, to young professionals — build your career not just on ambition, but on clarity of purpose, a commitment to continuous learning, and the courage to answer that “Why Me?” every single day. That’s what transforms a legal career into a meaningful journey.

    Finally, what guiding motto or philosophy has carried you through your legal journey? And looking back, what inspired you to pursue a career in law in the first place?

    My guiding philosophy has always been that law is not merely a profession, but a noble calling; a lifelong duty to the Constitution and to society at large. A lawyer is entrusted with the privilege of defending rights, upholding justice, and ensuring that the rule of law prevails over fear, power, or influence.

    The inspiration to pursue this path came at a defining moment in my eleventh standard, when I had to choose my stream of study. At that time, the choices were clear — science for engineers, biology for doctors, commerce for accountants. Unsure of where I belonged, I asked my father what I should pursue. His answer changed the course of my life. Looking at my extrovert nature, my speaking skills, my temperament, and the qualities he believed reflected a good lawyer, he said to me:

    “You should become an Advocate and prepare for CLAT which has only recently been introduced. And then he said something that stayed with me forever: A lawyer is not just a professional, he is the guardian of rights and the defender of the Constitution. Law is supreme; it bows before no one, and neither can a true lawyer ever be bowed or broken. To be a lawyer is to fight for justice, to stand for truth, and to give strength to those who cannot fight for themselves. If you truly wish to live a life of meaning and difference, become a good lawyer because a good lawyer can never be silenced, never be tamed.” 

    Those words struck me to the core. They gave me a vision of law as a higher calling, a life of service through justice. And from that day onwards, I knew this was the journey I was meant for. As a strong believer in karma, destiny, and God, I have also realized that one must remain calm, patient, and consistent. If your deeds are sincere and your conviction unwavering, everything else eventually falls into place. Life has its own rhythm, and faith in that process gives you the strength to persevere even through the toughest trials.

    Looking back now, every academic pursuit, every courtroom battle, every social initiative I have undertaken has been guided by that conviction. For me, the practice of law is not just about winning cases — it is about carrying forward a legacy of courage, compassion, and constitutional duty. That is the motto that continues to carry me forward.

    Sir, please tell us about your journey and how you ended up pursuing a career in law after graduating from the National Law School of India University?

    After graduating from the National Law School of India University, my journey in the field of law has been both fulfilling and exciting. I always had a deep interest in understanding legal systems and advocating for justice, which led me to pursue a career in law.

    During my time at the National Law School, I had the opportunity to study under renowned professors and engage in stimulating academic discussions. The rigorous curriculum and practical exposure provided me with a strong foundation in various aspects of law, including constitutional law, criminal law, corporate law, and international law, as well as developing skills like negotiating contracts, legal research, etc.

    During my internships at the Trial Courts and High Court of Delhi, I realized that the law taught to us in college, is different in terms of practice in Courts like procedure, evidence, etc. Therefore, following my graduation, I began my professional journey by joining a boutique litigation law firm, where I started as an associate. This experience allowed me to work on a wide range of legal matters, including litigation, contract drafting, due diligence, and legal research. I had the opportunity to collaborate with seasoned lawyers and gain valuable insights into the intricacies of the legal profession.

    While practicing at the law firm, I developed a particular interest in litigation and advocacy. This passion drove me to transition into a litigation-focused role, where I had the opportunity to represent clients in court, present arguments, and analyze complex legal issues. This phase of my career allowed me to refine my legal skills and develop a deep understanding of courtroom dynamics.

    Over the years, I have had the privilege of working in both litigation and corporate legal, being in-house counsel to various MNCs. I have also had the privilege to work in domestic as well as international markets and with the diversity of not only strictly legal, but also public policy, advocacy, etc.

    In addition to my professional work, I have also been actively involved in pro bono initiatives, providing legal aid to underprivileged individuals and contributing to social justice causes. This aspect of my career has been immensely rewarding, allowing me to use my legal skills to make a positive impact on society.

    Overall, my journey in law has been a result of my passion for justice, a drive to make a positive impact, and a constant commitment to enhancing my legal knowledge and skills. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had and look forward to continuing my journey as a legal professional.

    You have had a diverse range of experiences in both litigation and in-house legal roles. Could you share some key highlights or significant cases that have shaped your career so far?

    Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working on various significant cases and handling crucial legal matters, which have personally challenged me and were exciting projects. It is difficult to pin-point a couple here. 

    But generally speaking there have been cases in litigation both criminal and civil where you may arrive at a point when you think you have no case or no argument and then one needs to take a step back and think a little outside of the box and develop an argument. I think that is the least we owe to our client, to give more than our 100%. And when the Judge appreciates your argument and the fact you were able to find the point, that feeling is pure ecstatic. And frankly, I think it’s that feeling that pushes us to keep doing better in litigation.

    Similarly, as an in-house counsel, I have been working with commercial transactional agreements, international or domestic, sometimes not only closing the agreement, which itself becomes a task, but also providing other solutions to get the maximum output from the deal. For example, bypassing domestic and international tax laws, corporate structuring of the deal, exposure to the least risk possible, etc. 

    These are just a few highlights from my career so far. Each experience has contributed to my professional growth, deepened my understanding of various legal domains, and reinforced the importance of being up-to-date with the laws, effective advocacy, strategic thinking, and meticulous attention to detail. 

    As the Director of Legal & Business Development at Indian Reprographic Rights Organisation (IRRO), you gained experience with international laws and commercial transactions. How did this role contribute to your professional growth, and what were some of the challenges you faced?

    As Director, at the Indian Reprographic Rights Organisation (IRRO), my role was basically spear-heading the Organization. It involved working on domestic and international laws and commercial transactions, which significantly contributed to my professional growth. It was basically a Non-profit think-tank which worked towards helping shape the IPR policy and provide the government with inputs.

    As it was the first time I was working in this kind of Organisation, the challenges were infinite. It was basically like working in a start-up. The team, initially, was small. I had to be responsible for all the decisions that were taken. Challenges like micro-managing everything, realizing that no one has heard of the Organisation, working with limited funds, government red-tape and diktat, FERA & FEMA regulations, etc. However, once you grasp your way around things, it becomes easy and the experience I gathered was amazing.

    It helped me grow as it provided me with international Exposure. Working on international laws and transactions exposed me to different legal systems, regulations, and business practices. It broadened my understanding of how laws operate in various jurisdictions, enabling me to navigate cross-border legal issues more effectively. It improved my contract negotiation and drafting skills. It provided me with insights regarding compliance with regulations.

    Overall, my role at IRRO provided me with invaluable experience in international laws, commercial transactions, copyright education, and stakeholder management. It enhanced my legal expertise, honed my negotiation skills, and deepened my understanding of the complexities of intellectual property rights. The challenges I faced, such as compliance complexities and managing diverse stakeholders, reinforced the importance of adaptability, strategic thinking, and effective communication in addressing multifaceted legal and business issues.

    In your role as General Manager – Legal for Franchise India Group of Companies, you headed the legal team and dealt with policy and advocacy matters. Can you elaborate on the challenges you encountered and the strategies you implemented to ensure legal compliance while supporting the growth of the conglomerate?

    As the General Manager – Legal for Franchise India Group of Companies, I was basically their Global Legal Head as Franchise India is an MNC with offices in 6 Countries and business almost everywhere in the world. My experience was different as the setup here was quite elaborate vis-a vis my previous Organisation. It had its own perks but its own challenges too. 

    A major challenge that I came across was that I have always been an individual contributor. While I did lead a decent team in my previous Organisation, being completely able to delegate work to someone who you have never worked with before, was tough for me. However, it took me a bit of time but that was the easiest of the challenges. 

    The more difficult challenges were dealing with multi-faceted legal compliance. The conglomerate operated in various industries, each with its own set of regulations and compliance requirements. Ensuring legal compliance across all sectors was a significant challenge. To tackle this, I developed a robust compliance management system that involved conducting regular audits, creating compliance manuals, and implementing training programs to educate employees about legal obligations. I also established strong relationships with regulatory agencies to stay updated on regulatory changes and engage in proactive compliance measures.

    Policy and Advocacy: Dealing with policy and advocacy matters required a comprehensive understanding of the legal and regulatory landscape. I closely monitored legislative developments, engaged with industry associations, and actively participated in policy discussions. I collaborated with internal stakeholders to develop and advocate for favorable policies that supported the conglomerate’s growth objectives while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

    Contract Management: Since international agreements were a major part of the organization, it brought along the need to have knowledge of international laws and their domestic laws as well. The conglomerate engaged in a wide range of contracts, including lease and license agreements, strategic partnerships, service agreements, and distribution agreements. Managing and negotiating these contracts while safeguarding the conglomerate’s interests was a critical responsibility. I implemented standardized contract templates, streamlined contract review processes, and provided training to internal teams on contract negotiation and risk assessment. This ensured consistency, minimized legal risks, and expedited contract closures. Many times, there were language barriers too but I feel as long as both parties want to enter into an agreement, in good faith, challenges can be worked upon.

    In summary, my strategies focused on proactive compliance management, policy advocacy, efficient contract management, stakeholder engagement, risk mitigation, and effective dispute resolution. By addressing these challenges, I contributed to the conglomerate’s growth while ensuring legal compliance and minimizing legal risks.

    As the Legal Head for Medicover Group of Hospitals in India, you were involved in various acquisition and merger agreements, as well as corporate structuring. How did you navigate the complexities of these transactions, and what role did you play in ensuring smooth operations for the organization?

    When I joined Medicover, the biggest challenge was COVID-19. I joined the organization at the brink of COVID and the times were tough. The challenges began right away being employee issues as people didn’t want to come to hospitals to work. Although the Organisation was great and swiftly provided all the protective gear and things to employees, it was still difficult for people as no one knew about the virus and the magnitude of it.

    For smooth operations, I relied on the experience I have gathered till date. Before engaging in any acquisition or merger, conducting comprehensive due diligence was crucial. I oversaw the due diligence process, which involved analyzing legal, financial, and operational aspects of the target entities. By identifying potential risks, liabilities, and regulatory compliance issues, I provided valuable insights to the management, enabling them to make informed decisions.

    Secondly, Structuring Transactions. Each acquisition and merger presented unique considerations, such as regulatory compliance, taxation implications, and integration of operations. I worked closely with internal stakeholders, external advisors, and management to develop the most suitable transaction structures. This involved assessing legal and regulatory requirements, drafting and negotiating agreements, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws.

    Thirdly, Contract Negotiation and Drafting. This was comparatively easy as I have been doing this throughout my career and hence played a key role in negotiating and drafting acquisition and merger agreements. I ensured that the terms and conditions were favorable to Medicover Group while protecting its interests. This involved collaborating with the business and finance teams to identify key deal points, conducting negotiations with the counterparty, and drafting agreements that clearly defined rights, obligations, and protections. Throughout the acquisition and merger process, I identified and managed legal and operational risks. This included conducting risk assessments, implementing risk mitigation strategies, and advising the management on potential risks associated with the transactions. By proactively addressing risks, I helped safeguard Medicover Group’s interests and ensured the smooth functioning of the organization.

    Fourthly, Regulatory Compliance. Healthcare is a highly regulated sector, and compliance with various laws and regulations was critical for smooth operations. I worked closely with regulatory authorities, such as state and national governments and healthcare regulatory agencies, to ensure compliance with licensing, permits, and other regulatory requirements. I also advised internal teams on healthcare-specific regulations, including those related to patient privacy, medical ethics, and quality standards.

    Lastly, Integration and Post-Merger Activities. After completing an acquisition or merger, integrating the acquired entities into the Medicover Group was crucial for seamless operations. I collaborated with cross-functional teams to harmonize processes, systems, and policies. This involved managing legal aspects of employee transfers, aligning corporate governance structures, and ensuring compliance with Medicover Group’s policies and procedures.

    Overall, although my stint was short with Medicover, it provided me with immense experience and the Management was amazing. The healthcare industry is quite fast paced and there are multiple issues everyday being compliance issues, litigations, licenses, adherence to govt. notifications (due to COVID), etc. My CEO trusted me with almost everything and relied on my expertise and advice and didn’t micro-manage. Medicover provided me with great exposure into a new industry with both domestic and international issues to be dealt with.

    Throughout your career, you have gained extensive experience in contract drafting, negotiation, and management. What are some key strategies or approaches you employ when dealing with complex contracts or negotiations?

    When dealing with complex contracts or negotiations, I employ several key strategies and approaches to ensure effective outcomes. Here are some of the techniques I use:

    Thorough Understanding of the Subject Matter: Before entering into any contract or negotiation, I make sure to develop a deep understanding of the subject matter. This involves conducting comprehensive research, studying relevant laws and regulations, and familiarizing myself with the industry practices and standards. This enables me to identify key issues, anticipate potential challenges, and negotiate from a position of knowledge and strength.

    Clear Communication and Active Listening: Effective communication is essential during contract negotiations. I focus on clearly articulating my client’s objectives and requirements, while also actively listening to the counterparty’s concerns and interests. By fostering open and transparent communication, I strive to establish a collaborative environment that promotes constructive dialogue and a mutual understanding of the parties’ needs.

    Preparation and Planning: Adequate preparation is crucial for successful contract negotiations. I thoroughly review all relevant documentation, including the contract terms, supporting materials, and any applicable laws or regulations. This enables me to anticipate potential issues, identify potential areas of compromise, and develop a well-rounded negotiation strategy. I also establish clear objectives and priorities, ensuring that my client’s interests are protected while seeking mutually beneficial solutions.

    Building Relationships and Trust: Building trust and rapport with the counterparty is instrumental in reaching favorable outcomes. I strive to establish a professional and respectful relationship based on trust, integrity, and transparency. This can involve engaging in small talk, finding common ground, and demonstrating a genuine interest in understanding the counterparty’s perspective. By fostering a positive rapport, I create a conducive environment for finding common ground and resolving disagreements.

    Flexibility and Creativity: Complex contracts or negotiations often require flexibility and creative problem-solving. I approach negotiations with an open mind, exploring alternative solutions and considering various options. This allows me to think outside the box and propose innovative approaches that meet both parties’ interests. I am willing to consider different perspectives, explore compromise, and find win-win solutions whenever possible.

    Documenting Agreements and Managing Risks: Once an agreement is reached, I ensure that it is clearly documented in a comprehensive and enforceable contract. This enables me to adapt my strategies and approaches to the specific context and leverage new insights and techniques.

    By employing these strategies, I aim to facilitate effective contract negotiations, foster positive relationships, and achieve optimal outcomes for my clients.

    As someone with a successful legal career, what advice would you give to fresh graduates who are starting their journey in the field of law? Are there any particular skills or qualities they should focus on developing?

    Frankly, I don’t think that I am successful enough yet to give advice to other people. However, the few kids I mentor or if someone reaches out to me on LinkedIn for advice and how to proceed in their legal career after college, I just tell them a few things. Firstly, if its clear to you that you want to choose any specific field, that’s great. But if you are not clear, that works fine too. 

    For eg; some students are clear that they want to do only litigation. However, many first-generation lawyers like myself are not sure what to choose and how to go about it and of course there is lack of guidance. My suggestion is to try everything. Being a litigator has its own perks, but being in-house counsel is also great. It is only after trying things one can be sure if they like it or not. 

    The one thing non-negotiable is hard work. You must be willing to put in the hours with dedication. Smart work will only take to a certain level but hard work will always pay off in the long run.

    You have written articles and provided opinions on various legal issues, such as copyright, education policy, and IT rules. How do you balance your professional commitments with your passion for writing and contributing to legal discourse?

    To be fair, it is extremely challenging and hence I haven’t been able to publish more articles. However, I believe that engaging in legal writing and sharing my perspectives on important legal issues allows me to contribute to the broader legal community and promote meaningful discussions.

    I must attribute some credit to NLS for this. The curriculum is so intense, it makes you respect deadlines and provide your best work in the shortest time. To manage this balance, I allocate dedicated time for writing and research outside of my professional commitments. I stay updated on legal developments, both through my work and personal research, which helps me identify relevant topics to write about. By effectively managing my time and prioritizing my commitments, I ensure that I can devote sufficient attention to both my professional work and my passion for writing. It requires discipline and careful planning, but the opportunity to contribute to legal discourse and make a positive impact on the field makes it all worthwhile.

    Lastly, what are your future aspirations and goals within the legal field? Is there a particular area or cause that you are passionate about and would like to focus on in the coming years?

    In the future, I aspire to continue growing and excelling in the legal field while making a positive impact. I am passionate about various areas within the legal field, including intellectual property rights, technology law, E-commerce and corporate governance.

    One of my key goals is to contribute to the development and implementation of legal frameworks that promote innovation, protect intellectual property, and foster a fair and sustainable business environment. I am particularly interested in the intersection of law and technology, and I aim to stay at the forefront of emerging legal issues in areas such as data privacy, artificial intelligence, and digital rights. To keep myself updated with these, I try to take up courses available.

    Additionally, I am committed to advocating for access to justice and promoting legal awareness among marginalized communities. I believe in the power of legal education and empowerment to bring about positive social change. In furtherance of this cause, I volunteer with a couple of NGOs which work towards prevention of Human Rights. I am generally open to other causes as well and people reach out to me on LinkedIn for advice.

    In the coming years, I intend to deepen my expertise and provide my services to the clients. Apart from litigation, I am deeply interested in IPR Licensing, Financial Services & Insurance, Fin-tech, E-Commerce industries. I would love to work in these sectors and collaborate with organizations and stakeholders to drive legal reforms.

    Jyoti graduated in law from University of Delhi in 2009. She subsequently went on to earn her LL.M in 2011. She has been working with the Legal & Treaties Division of the Ministry of External Affairs as a Consultant. She is also visiting faculty in University of Delhi and Indian Society of International Law, apart from other Law Schools. In her capacity, she handles the drafting and up-loading of the Treaties on MEA website. She vets the Agreements/Treaties /MoUs signed between the Govt. of India with other countries as well as advice on the court cases coming to the division. Apart from attending Inter ministerial meetings, she also goes to courts to brief the government counsels.

    What motivated you to pursue a career in law?

    Honestly, I was not particularly keen on pursuing law, as I hail from a family of bureaucrats and doctors. Having said that, I would like to add that once I chose law, I started enjoying the subject thoroughly, as no other field is as dynamic or has such an impetus to excel. In today’s globalized world, the knowledge of law has become more of a requirement than a career choice, and I personally feel that it truly empowers and enriches every individual to deal with any travesty.

     

    Did you pursue extracurricular activities such as moots and debates in law school? 

    Yes, I was part of debates and extracurricular activities during my budding years. I was also a part of the core committee which organized international conferences in my college. It is necessary as well as interesting for students to excel either in research or debate or any other extracurricular activity apart from studies, if you are in the initial phase of your law school. Law is all about how confident one is to present oneself and make a niche.

     

    Tell us about your internships. 

    I did my internship at the National Commission for Women along with a few prominent law firms. Internships are very important in assessing your interest in the relevant area. When you intern, you get to know about the practical aspects of your subject, whereas classrooms cover only the the theoretical aspects. Therefore, the right kind of internship makes each student distinctive among their peer group.  Internships provide first-hand experience in the legal profession and a close look at the day-to-day responsibilities that come with being a lawyer.

    Simultaneously the students will gain an insight into what type of law they would want to—or not want to—pursue after graduation from law school. Someone might think about becoming a criminal lawyer, but then intern for a corporate law firm and realize that is what they would prefer to practice instead.

    Interest in the subject, exposure, kind of work given to interns, etc. should be kept in mind while applying for internships. I feel that students should get as much exposure as they can while doing their LL.B. course.

     

    Have you ever felt the NLU and non- NLU divide? Do you think it is a consideration for employers?

    Absolutely not. When you are capable of proving your worth, I don’t think the NLU, non-NLU divide can prove to be a hindrance. In the end, what the employers want is the maximum output from their employees and not a prominent law school name in their credentials. It therefore is a myth and not a reality.

     

    What are your areas of interest? How did you discover and pursue them?

    My area of interest primarily has been International Law and Constitutional Law along with Commercial Laws. I have been very focused since my childhood on the latest developments at the national as well as at international level. Reading newspapers and magazines and co-relating them to the contemporary development gave me an unparalleled insight and I traced my interest in International Law during those years of my life.  It was kind of fascinating to read about how the legal system works globally. My interest in Constitution was always there which got a boost in my second year of law. DU Law Faculty stresses on case study mechanism and reading all the historical and land mark cases of Constitution somehow cleared my understanding and developed my fascination towards Constitution of India and Constitutional Law.

     

    What was the motivation behind pursuing an LLM? 

    LL.M. gives an altogether different perspective to law students. You tend to be specific and more research oriented when you do your Masters. You also get to have many more career options when you do your Masters including academics. This world is becoming increasingly competitive and complex and it is always better to have a specialization along with a better understanding and doing LL.M. gives you that platform.

     

    How did you secure a position with the Ministry of External Affairs?

    I joined the MEA because of my specialization in International Law. If students wish to join the MEA they should sharpen up their International Law skills and should do more and more internships in International Organizations along with attending summer courses in international law.

     

    What is your work profile in the capacity as a consultant for the MEA?

    We work on International Law related issues. It involves vigorous research on Treaties and Agreements and its negotiation. Apart from that few domestic law related issues also see the thrust of Legal Division of MEA and overall the experience is great.

     

    What are the skills one needs to develop in order to work with the MEA?

    One should be energetic, have a far sighted insight into all the aspects of International Law, and be outspoken. Having said that, one should be ready to slog as there is no short cut to success in any field.

     

    What inspired you to pursue academia?

    Teaching is intellectually stimulating. You read and study in order to make others read. Isn’t it interesting enough? Also when I teach I get to interact with younger lot of students who are always inquisitive and keep throwing a volley of questions, enriching their teachers in turn. I have taught at Delhi University Law Faculty, my Alma matter, apart from the Indian Society of International Law as a visiting faculty.

     

    How can our readers stay updated about India’s diplomatic ties and relations with other countries? 

    India and its international relations are in the limelight of late. The Ministry of External Affairs is the Government agency responsible for update of the foreign relation between India and other foreign countries. Anyone who has interest in diplomacy should keep themselves abreast by regularly visiting the website of MEA. Also, there are many magazines and newspapers which cover the diplomatic relationships widely.

     

    What challenges have you faced in building up your career as it stands today?

    Like every other student grappling in the final stage of his studies, I was also very apprehensive of the uncertainties of the field I chose for myself. However, law is a field which never disappoints. There is ample scope for every individual to shine. There are always teething troubles but they can be overcome with sheer determination and will.

     

    What advice do you have for our readers who are primarily college students?

    My advice to all the burgeoning lawyers is that give your best at the college level as this is where you get a foundation for your upcoming years. Stay positive, work hard, and never mislay your passion while making a career in law. All the best.

    How would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?

    I am a dispute resolution lawyer, pursuing a niche area of law (particularly for India) i.e. international investment law and arbitration, which involves international investment agreements (bilateral and multilateral), the combination of public international law and public policy issues, and investment treaty arbitrations. I am also stronger believer in the fact that there is no age for learning, identifying and pursuing what you love doing.

     

    Why did you choose to pursue a degree in law, amidst the many options that you had after school?

    I never intended to practice law. In fact, I am the only lawyer in my family. Studying law was only a medium to get into Civil Services as generally law subjects are likely to enhance chances of getting through. However, those five years at law school changed my mind. Law turned out to be so exciting and with all the madness in law school in terms of debates, moots, competitions, research, internships, I felt like giving it a shot and after that, I never felt like turning back. It’s extremely important to love your profession and what you wake up to every day. Today, I don’t regret my decision and I am very content with my profession. A career in law is demanding, but working towards resolving a challenging issue is exciting and, gives me immense pleasure. Law teaches one to think independently and optimistically changes the outlook towards dealing with all issues in life.

     

    Could you briefly explain your law school experience at ILS? 

    After passing out from an all girls’ boarding school, moving to ILS was like breaking free. Jokes apart, ILS just lets you be. In the beginning I felt directionless as there were just early morning classes and the whole day we were left with nothing to do. And hearing from other friends at law school where the curriculum was much stricter with many other activities, I wondered whether I made the wrong choice. Within a few months I realised I had the free time to do what I want, which other law students may not have so why not utilise it efficaciously. Rather than being told what to do or being forced to do something, we were given the flexibility to decide what we would like to do in our free time. This not only gave us the freedom to decide but also helped us excel in what we did, as we did it out of choice. With time I have also come to realise that it’s not so much about going to the so called top ten ranked colleges, but about moulding yourself to excel even in all circumstances with given opportunities, because then, you are ready to outshine in all facets of life.

     

    What were the activities, academic or otherwise, that you undertook in your law school days which in your opinion have shaped you and your career?

    In college, I was an active mooter/debater, organized, participated and secured positions in various national moots and debate competitions. I was also an avid writer and wrote articles for the college magazine, assisted professors in research activities and drafting of regulations and involved in volunteering activities. To make most out of available time, I also completed a diploma course in ‘Alternate Dispute Resolution’ and ‘Mergers and Acquisitions’ from Asian School of Cyber Laws, Pune. I did spend my holidays, like most law students, in taking up internships. Above all, I would say internships in the last two years of law school really helped me get a direction as to what I want to do and where I want to begin my career from.

     

    What kind of internships did you undertake during your student years? 

    With no legal background and no one to advise at home, I made sure to undertake internships in different spheres of legal fields, starting with a NGO involving understanding of human rights law to other specialised fields/departments in law firms including general corporate, mergers and acquisitions, competition law, policy & regulatory, dispute resolution including arbitrations etc. I can’t stress enough the significance of doing internships in wide array of laws, if one is not fully sure about a particular specialisation or area of interest from the beginning. Internships give you an opportunity to experiment, analyse and decide which area you are particularly interested in. Lawyers with specific expertise are preferred by clients.

    Thus, the strategy is to apply to a wide range of counsels, niche and large law firms, NGOs, in-house opportunities, international schemes and programmes, Indian and internationals courts, and to see where you can get through and try for the other on the next occasion.

     

    At what stage in one’s law school life/career must one pick a specialisation? 

    As I mentioned above, one should leave no stone unturned before you discover the area of specialisation and interest particular to you. Although the traditional opinion is to stick to an area of law right from the beginning, and continue with that. But that thinking has to change, else how would you know, which other fields of law could be interesting for you? So, if one has to ultimately reach that field of specialisation one day, then, why not be satisfied that it is the right one.

     

    What are your areas of practice and how did you go about choosing these fields to specialise in?

    I took no different approach as I mentioned earlier. After doing various internships, I was most attracted to the dispute resolution field. Unfortunately, to my dislike, when I got a PPO at Amarchand & Mangaldas (now SAM) and was finally placed, I was allocated to the General Corporate team. I continued with the team for six months. Working with the General Corporate team reinforced my decision to move to dispute resolution.  Accordingly, I approached Amarchand’s management for a change of departments. They heard me out and were understanding, and kindly offered me to move to the Dispute Resolution practice. Ever since, my appreciation for the field grew stronger. At Amarchand, I was involved in providing services to a wide range of international and domestic clients, by handling various matters pertaining to strategic advisory on cross-border legal issues, advisory in potential dispute situations, commercial disputes, and corporate fraud investigations. Particularly, I was involved in complex infrastructure and commercial arbitrations (for instance dealing with operation and maintenance contracts, oil exploration and procurement related arrangements and pipeline construction agreements), which provided me with crucial insights into the strategy and management of large and high profile arbitrations.

    I left Amarchand to pursue an LLM at King’s College London, where I completed a Master’s in International Business Laws, particularly focusing on subjects relating to international commercial and investment arbitration. At King’s, I developed a particular interest in the area of international investment agreements, including Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) and investment treaty disputes, and I decided to delve further into this area of law. While I was at King’s, BITs were a hot topic of discussion in India as the government was involved in the process of reforming the IIA regime. When I returned from my LLM, the International Investment Agreement Section of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance published an opening for lawyers to assist and advise on investment agreement negotiations, disputes and related policy work. I couldn’t have missed this opportunity, and am very glad to be part of the Government during the internal reformation process and further developments.

    It did take me sometime to figure out my core area of interest and specialisation. Today, I would call myself a dispute resolution lawyer and my area of interest lies in cross-border arbitrations, investment treaty negotiations and advisory. A combination of Investment & Trade law along with public international law is an upcoming area of law, and I would strongly advise students to consider this.

     

    What made you decide to go for LLM? 

    Given that I was handling transnational disputes, which often involve transnational law elements and implications, it encouraged me to pursue a specialized Master’s program at King’s College London. Accordingly, at King’s, I chose to focus on international commercial and investment arbitration and international business litigation, which not only complemented my practical experience so far, but also improved my legal skills in handling international commercial disputes.

    I think, pursuing an LLM is about the overall exposure and cross-cultural experience that it offers in bringing together a conglomerate of students from all over the world. Apart from the experience of studying in London, notably the hub of integration and reconciliation of major international issues, at King’s, I also had the privilege of being taught by various internationally known academicians and barristers.

    LLM helped me significantly in getting where I am today, but it’s not a given that it would benefit others in the same way. However, no one would deny the overall benefits an LLM offers which are noticeable either in the change in personality, perspective and thinking, or in professional dealings.

     

    Which is the ideal time to do an L.L.M? 

    I would definitely recommend an LLM after few years of experience. An LLM is a specialised degree and I see no point pursuing one without fully understanding what you want to do. Some practical exposure is necessary to get better perspective on a specialised practice area. I noticed that students with no practical background found it difficult to cope with the LLM schedule and in deciding on the teaching modules. To be able to appreciate LLM courses, which mostly involve studying of issues in the forefront of global academic debate, to the fullest; it is important to have touched upon transnational transactions and disputes before in your professional experience.

    Are there any commendable Indian institutions which you would recommend to a student pursuing an L.L.M, or would you suggest looking only at options abroad?

    Frankly, I never devoted sufficient research on opportunities in the Indian institutions, so I wouldn’t be able to comment upon them. The decision also depends on the faculty of an institution and personal financial situation. As I mentioned above, an LLM is about the overall exposure that you get for a year, if finances/funds or scholarships are available, then my suggestion would be to go abroad and get that exposure. It is definitely worth it and a fruitful break from work.

     

    How were the first few years after your graduation? 

    (Rohini has previously worked at Amarchand&Mangaldas, one of the most sought after firms by law students, as a senior partner Associate.)

    It was long back when I got a PPO from Amarchand& Mangaldas. I think the best way to get in most law firms is give your best during internships. Most students don’t take internships seriously which is a big mistake. Getting through a Tier-I firm is no longer only about being a topper, firms are looking more and more for the all-rounder qualities a student may have, which include personality, outspoken character, participation in extra-curricular activities (including moots, debates, research projectsetc.), general knowledge, self-confidence, dedication and personal motivation.

     

    Tell us about being a Senior Legal Advisor at the Ministry of Finance.

    I am currently working as a Senior Legal Advisor with the International Investment Agreement Section, Ministry of Finance, Government of India where I am handling matters relating to International Investment Agreements, particularly involved in bilateral and multilateral investment treaty negotiations between India and many other countries, investment treaty disputes along with the related policy work on imminent national and international legal issues involving trade, investment and public international law. I have had the unique opportunity to represent India in investment and trade negotiations and had numerous interactions with well-experienced teams of diplomats and government officials.

     

    If given an opportunity, what would you do differently in your career journey up to this point? 

    I think, being a dispute resolution lawyer, I should have started my career from the lowest level i.e. district courts as I feel that’s the best place to get basic practical training. I should have ideally spent a year with a private practice lawyer. I would have spent less time understanding basics at Amarchand, if I had first-hand experience with courts on a daily basis in terms of research, drafting, arguing and handling clients all in my first year. It’s important for every lawyer to experience that fast paced life in courts at least once, even for corporate lawyers.  

    One advice that I have for all law students is just don’t drag on with a field that you are not interested in. I see students, in the mad rush of getting a job and under peer pressure, just take up anything that comes their way, even if it is something they would never like to practice. This is the biggest mistake as that would mislay your interest in law and smother the fire which one has after passing law school. At the most you will not get the best job in the best law firm in the first year of your career. But few years down the lane, you would all be on the same plane, and when you look back, you would at least not regret your decision.

     

    Is there any other suggestion you would like to give to our budding lawyers?

    Apart from above, my advice to the budding lawyers would be to put in your best efforts in the first few years as they are the most crucial years of your professional life. Moreover, just don’t worry about not earning enough or not the same as your peers in the first few years. Simply concentrate on your work. To be a successful lawyer, it is also crucial to develop upon your networking skills. Keeping this aside, it is extremely important to keep a work-life balance. Now, this doesn’t sound appropriate from a lawyer’s mouth, but I feel nothing is more important than good health, peaceful and happy personal life. Try and maintain that balance.

    George Pothan Poothicote graduated from Christ College, Bangalore with a B.Com degree before going on to complete his LL.B from JSS Law College, Mysore by 2010. While in law school he interned at several places including Ernst & Young and High Court of Kerala. He pursued an LL.M from King’s College, London and finished his masters by 2012. Immediately after completing his LL.M he came back to India and was appointed as Legal Consultant to Legal and Treaties Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India, New Delhi and he is currently working there.

    How would you introduce yourself? Tell us a bit about your pre law-college years. What motivated you to study law?

    Born in Mysore, I spent my early childhood dividing time between Mysore and Wayanad, and thereafter left to board at Montfort School, situated in Yercaud, a hill station in Tamil Nadu. I went on to do my B.Com at Christ College, Bangalore, LL.B at JSS Law College, Mysore and LL.M at King’s College, London.

    Hailing from a family of lawyers, I grew up imbibing into my very system the lawyers’ lingo and vernacular, and naturally felt drawn to the profession. Therefore, it was a firm and solid choice to become a lawyer myself.

     

    How would you describe your time at Mysore University? Tell us about the academic environment and faculty at the law department of the University.

    The experience was intense and extremely enriching. The student body was intellectually dynamic, with representatives from around the country and even abroad. The faculty included both full time academics and professional practitioners. They were very approachable, and inspired hope, ignited imagination and instilled a love of learning in their students.

    Did you take part in activities apart from your regular curriculum? What all did you do as a law student?

    I participated in practical applications of what I learned, and textbooks gradually came to be of secondary importance to me. In conference settings, at moot courts and in practical classes, I had the opportunity to observe stellar lawyers and law students and noted how effective they were as participants, not only because they possessed superior knowledge, but also because they seemed to instinctively know how to handle a variety of difficult scenarios. Every evening of my final year, I visited the chambers of a senior advocate in Mysore. Also, every Saturday that year, I travelled to a village 35 kilometers from the city to provide free legal aid services and out-of-court settlements, as well as to spread legal awareness.

    My participation in National and International moot court competitions ignited my passion for the field of international law and also enabled me to interact with students and faculty from around the world. I assisted in research work for the scion of the Mysore royal family in the dispute over assets of the royal family and the abolition of the Privy Purse. Later, I helped to draft an anti-ragging bill which was presented to the then Governor of Karnataka. I also represented the college in various seminars and conferences.

    While being good in academics was the most important function during my days at law school, engaging in extracurricular pursuits was a close second. I did indulge in sports and had the privilege of representing my class and college teams in cricket and volleyball.

    My objective during my LLB days was to do my best whilst maintaining a healthy balance and letting other things beyond my control take care of themselves.

     

    Do you believe that excellent CGPA is absolutely necessary for success?

    An excellent CGPA, or any other measure of academic record, can assist in furthering academic pursuits and optimizing the initial recruiting process. That said, the microcosm of university and the world at large are as different as chalk and cheese. In universities one learns the theoretical aspects of law, but for success in the practical applications of the work environment, top grades are not a prerequisite.

     

    What were your areas of interest during your graduation (LL.M)? How did you go about developing expertise and knowledge in these areas?

    Constitution, Criminal Law, Arbitration and International Law were some of the subjects that interested me during my LL.B days. The experience I gained through moot courts, assignments and conferences, as well as my interactions with a number of inspiring people, led me to develop a particular fascination for International Law, both private and public.

    I had long been keen on pursuing an LL.M in International Law, but participated in a variety of modules before finalizing my subjects. My subjects were a combination of Public and Private International Law and International Commercial and Business Law, which may appear to be quite a broad spectrum for the course level. However, the subjects were not as disparate they seem. They included Terrorism and State Violence, World Trade Law, Use of Force, Commercial and Investment Arbitration, and Negotiation. What is especially interesting is the intimate relationship between International Law and Diplomacy. My curriculum combined both.

     

    Please tell us about your internships during your graduation.

    Internships and building work experience had been a consistent part of my academic pursuits during my years as a law student. At the end of my first year in law school, I was able to reinforce my tax related knowledge through an internship with Ernst & Young in their Global Tax Analysis service department in Bangalore. At the end of my second year of law school, I gained invaluable court experience with Honourable Justice R. Basant, a Senior Judge at the High Court of Kerala. I shadowed him closely and was privy to the procedures of the chambers of a High Court Judge, which gave me access to the judge’s files, notes and discussions. I felt particularly privileged as this was a rare opportunity for a student.

    During my final year, I visited the chamber of Advocate KL Sugandhi, a senior advocate in Mysore, which involved interacting with clients, learning procedures and even contributing to work on the cases.

     

    Do you believe branding of college is something that’s very relevant/ important at any stage in a law student’s career?

    Branding seems to have become as inevitable in the field of education as in business. That said, it should be taken with a bucket of salt. Power on the professional battlefield is determined by hard work and dedication above all.

     

    When and how did you decide to pursue Masters? Was it a professional requirement or an endeavour out of academic interests?

    From the beginning of my law education, I had entertained the idea of pursuing an LL.M degree. That said, I never viewed it as a professional requirement, as I had initially been keen on a career in litigation, for which an LL.B would suffice. Over the course of my LLB, I pondered over the subjects I would like to pursue, and shortlisted the Universities that seemed best suited to my interests.  The LL.M was a great adventure that enabled me to set sail to shores more magnificent than I had ever imagined.

     

    You have done your LL.M. from Kings College London. Please share your experience. Any other university which offers a similar combination of modules?

    It was simply amazing. I was taught and inspired by some of the best professionals in their respective fields: Professors. Martin Hunter, Salim Moollan, Samuel Wordsworth, Dr. Federico Ortino and Dr. Piet Eechout, to name a few. I still am in touch with most of them both at personal and professional levels. Whenever I felt the need for an expert opinion or guidance, these professors were most helpful. The course combined theory with practical applications. The whole system was different from what I was familiar with at the LL.B level. In addition to textbook learning, there were group discussions, debates and lots of interactive sessions, with an emphasis on research. We were encouraged to write papers and discuss them.

    I still have fond memories of a workshop conducted by Prof. Martin Hunter, visits to his chambers at Essex Court Chambers and a Friday clinic he used to organise. Another unforgettable experience is the time I spent at the WTO, where I was able to interact with key people of the WTO Secretariat and Country representatives, and gain valuable insight into the incredible operations of such a hallowed institution.

    There are other Universities that offer such modules, but I am not in a position to recommend them.

     

    How will you compare the pedagogy at Mysore University with that of King’s College, London?

    Comparing the pedagogy at Mysore University and King’s College is tricky because I attended them at two completely different levels. The LL.B is a basic degree in law, structured primarily to meet the general requirements of practitioners in the field. An LL.M is an additional qualification that involves specialization, and as such the structure of the LL.M diverges from that of the LL.B.  During my LLB, most of my professors were full time faculty, whereas during my LL.M, the majority of lecturers were practitioners in their respective fields, and their experience and expertise did make a difference.  A good teacher always brings out the best in his/her students. I consider myself lucky to have been mentored by the right kind of teachers.

    Diversity was perhaps the most significant difference between the two programs. At King’s College, the faculty and the University at large catered to a crowd from across the globe. The student community at Mysore University was primarily Indian.

     

    Looking back, how significant do you think that your legal education was? When did you happen to experience the learning curve?

    I believe that my education in its entirety has made me who I am today. My legal education in particular has been significant in shaping my career, and my analytical view of the world.

    As I see it, the learning curve starts from the earliest stages of life. Every single day has presented learning opportunities. I think, therefore I am; I live, therefore I learn. The slope of my learning curve in the legal field took a surge towards the latter part of my LL.M program, and continued to steepen when I entered the Ministry of External Affairs, where I have interacted with some of the best legal minds in the country and around the world. The Senior Official Meetings, Ministerial Meetings and Summits of which I have been a part were incredible experiences. One particular case that gave impetus to my learning curve was a brief I received from Mr. Gourab Banerji, the then Additional Solicitor General of India, during my early days at the Ministry. It was my first significant case, and it was an exciting challenge. More recently, I have had the privilege of being involved with the Law Commission of India in its work on investment treaties, which has been quite insightful.

    I look forward to the continuing intellectual stimulation of my work. Learning is an integral part of the profession, as it shifts like the sands of time.

    You joined Ministry of External Affairs as a Legal Consultant; what worked for you in getting appointed?

    I assume that my academic pursuits and passion for the profession, in addition to the support I received from the then External Affairs Minister, Mr. Salman Khurshid, who had faith in my ability and trusted me with such great responsibility, led to my appointment.

     

    What are the career opportunities at MEA like?

    The MEA provides excellent opportunities for those interested in the international dimensions of law. We deal with treaty negotiations and international law disputes. Diplomacy is integral to the mix. That said, our work is not exclusively on an international level, as we do examine domestic law issues on occasion.

     

    Are Legal Consultants allowed foreign postings? How does their work interact with that of the Indian Foreign Service?

    Foreign postings are certainly available to those belonging to the Legal Cadre of the MEA. The Hague headquarters the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Geneva and New York City are bases for numerous international organisations.

    The responsibilities of international law and diplomacy require a great amount of interaction with foreign service officers and other government representatives.

    Would you say that there exists a difference in the working environment of a law firm and legal department of the govt. offices?

    Most certainly, although I am not in a position to comment in depth on private law firms, as I have never worked in one. In the Government, everyone works for the Government of the day, and the work is not limited to legal issues. The tasks at hand are quite complex: they involve participating in drafting legislation, policy making, negotiating treaties and a variety of other roles. Most importantly, working for the Government means representing the Country and promoting collective rather than individual interests.

     

    What is the procedure to apply for an internship and recruitment at MEA? What are the qualities which they look for in their prospective employees?

    It starts with sending the completed form in the requisite format, along with references, to the Ministry to the Administrative Division (or any other Division that interests a prospective intern). From there, the applications are considered on merit. It is generally difficult to accommodate all applicants considering the huge volume of applications usually received. Details on applying for an internship at the MEA are enumerated on the website of the MEA.

     

    Have you ever considered starting up on your own?

    Starting my own practice has always been at the back of my mind. If I start my private chamber practice, I would focus on litigation before the Supreme Court, High Courts and Tribunals.  Considering my LL.M specialization and current work, I would be keen to pursue an active practice in investment arbitration, as well as international and domestic commercial arbitration.

    I firmly believe that there is potential everywhere, and it is about looking out through the window of opportunity. Talent finds its happiness in execution. Simply follow your heart, make the right choices and be dedicated.

     

    Please tell us about the requisite soft skills which are essential for a young lawyer to build a successful career?

    Communication skills, which are essential in any profession, are particularly valuable for a young lawyer. An open line of communication with colleagues assists in efficiency and securing solid relationships. Clarity, charisma and discretion must be kept in mind when dealing with clients.

    Commitment is important, given the heavy workload of young lawyers, and the established standards of excellence.

    Creativity is an immense asset, as innovation and thinking outside the box aid in problem solving and negotiation.

     

    What are your views on the future of Indian legal education? How would you suggest that a law student manages to stay ahead?

    I would like our institutions to compete with the best in the world. There is no dearth of resources in India, but we have to make optimal use of them. I hope to live to see the day our institutions are ranked among the best in the world, and pray that it is not far away. We need to support academicians in their pursuit. I personally am of the view that institutions should create a platform to bring in greater interaction between practitioners and students. The greatest asset of any educational institution is the character of its teachers. We need to encourage research and avoid spoon feeding. Classrooms should be about imparting knowledge and not forcing one’s views on the others. Students should be prepared to face the world outside beyond the realms of the microcosm of universities. I would suggest encouraging research and more practical classes and workshops. They are the need of the hour. The legal fraternity has to come together and support our institutions with a clear roadmap for the way ahead.

     

    What are the three things you consider law students should do in their careers?

    To me, goals should be set individually, and not based on what someone else has achieved. Be yourself, as they say. The markers of success vary, but generally, I would say that it can be achieved by staying focused, working smart and being organized. Professional mileage can be optimized with perseverance, perspiration and a stroke of luck.

     

    What would be your parting message to young lawyers?

    Here I would like to borrow from Mr. Fali Nariman, who lists the following in his autobiography “Before Memory Fades”:

    • A lawyer’s opinion should be honest and responsible,
    • A good lawyer should acquaint oneself with relevant law, including case law on the subject at hand,
    • One should be clear and precise, not confused,
    • One should keep oneself informed and up to date with all the reported judgments and decisions of the Supreme Court and High Courts,
    • A lawyer should be well prepared for his case.

    A lawyer must never stop learning, for intellect demands clarity and certainty. That said, circumstances render uncertainty inevitable and fascinating. In an ever changing world, progress is proportional to the capacity to endure uncertainty.

    One’s name is a prized possession in this mortal world, which through our acts, deeds and achievements can be immortalized and etched in the minds of generations to come.

    Saurav Kumar graduated from National Law Institute University, Bhopal in 2012. After doing various litigation internships at both the High Court and Supreme Court, he was recruited by New India Assurance Company Limited.

    Among all his academic commitments he played a lot of sports in law school and was prominent member of Sports Committee at NLIU. He had always planned to pursue a career in government sector since his days in law school and is currently working as an Administrative Officer-Legal at the New India Assurance Co. Ltd.

    How would you like to introduce yourself to our readers who are primarily young and aspiring lawyers?

    Hello, I am Saurav Kumar, 2012 batch graduate from National Law Institute University, Bhopal, currently working as an administrative officer-legal at The New India Assurance Co. Ltd.  I am an extrovert by nature and have likelihood for all things outdoor. I like interacting with new people, exploring new things and travelling a lot.

     

    What motivated you to choose law as a career?

    Honestly speaking, choosing law as a career wasn’t much of a planned move. I was exploring many options after passing 10thand I found law very interesting as a career option.  Initially I was attracted because of fancy newspaper articles related to whole court room drama and other high profile cases where lawyers had very important role to play but slowly after reading more about legal profession my perception changed a lot.

     

    Why did you decide to study law? Did you ever think of alternate career options?

    After my 10+2, I was lucky to have been ably guided by my father and some of his friends who are lawyers of good repute about the various avenues that the field of law has to offer. So despite having chosen science as my stream after 10th, there was always an inclination towards law. Personally too, I was of the opinion that I had a better aptitude for legal studies than anything else.

     

    Tell us in detail about your time at NLIU. Which activities did you participate in?

    My involvement was more in campus activities than the regular stuff like mooting and debating etc. which is the general trend among most of the students in NLUs.  As is often appropriately said that college is not only where you grow academically but also evolve as a person, so has been my time at NLIU. While learning the nuances of law it has made me ever more confident as a person. The memories and the self-dependency that the hostel life gave me are things I would forever cherish.

    At NLIU, you were associated with student committees. What skills did you acquire while serving various committees?

    I was not directly associated with any committees, except sport committee in final year but I always enjoyed working with my seniors and my batch mates in organizing various events.  Working as a team always helps you to learn from others.  It also gave me invaluable lessons in man-management and organizational skills, team-work and keeping others motivated in a unit. I was lucky to get support from students across the batches whenever I needed, which I think was possible only because of one mantra I always followed “give respect to others if you want to get respected by them”.

     

    What kind of internships did you do in your law school? Which internships will you consider to be right at the top and why? Did you have institutional support for procurement of internships?

    Most of my internships have been litigation based, which I got by applying directly or through personal contacts.  I interned with advocates of High Court and Supreme Court but the one I would put on the top is with Mr. Rajiv Sinha, advocate at the Civil Court.  Lower Court is a court of fact as opposed to HC and SC which are essentially courts of law. It is the first stepping stone. I gained valuable experience in drafting, pleading, framing of arguments, research work etc.  Also there is a lot of court procedure one does not simply learn through the procedure codes. Now that I am working on field, my work mostly involving supervision of lawyers, I can vouch that the nitty-gritties learnt at the trial level have been very handy to me.

     

    You are currently working at the New India Assurance Company Limited as law officer. How did you go about getting a job there? Please tell us about the recruitment process at NIACL.

    I was preparing for the judicial services examination, notification for most of the state judiciary was delayed that year. In the meanwhile I came to know about notification for recruitment of legal officer in NIACL. Recruitment process is similar to most of the PSUs.  There are two stages, written test and interview. Recruitment process in all four public sector general insurance company was not conducted as it was required in last few years, resulting into shortage of officers in various departments.  Many of the seniors officers are at the stage of retirement in next few years, therefore these companies are planning to recruit a large number of officers in upcoming years.  There are vacancies for legal officers in most of the offices; it is a very good opportunity for new graduates.  Our batch was first in that process and it will continue for at least next 2-3 years.

     

    What does NIACL look for in prospective employees? Is the induction process any different from Law Firms?

    I don’t know much about the induction process in law firms; people working in law firms can guide you better. After joining NIACL we had attended 12 weeks training program in Pune. During our induction training basic information regarding various departments was given by respective department heads.  In the last stage of training special session was conducted for practical knowledge.  As a legal officer they expect us to be well-versed with the basic concepts of procedural laws and some other important subjects like tort, contract etc.  Most of us were not good in insurance related laws but at the time of training they spent enough time on these subjects.

     

    Tell us about your job interview. What kinds of questions were asked? Do you remember any of the questions? How did you prepare for it?

    Before the interview, we were asked to fill a sheet which consists of questions regarding academics, co-curricular activities and some other general questions.  They asked a few question based on whatever I had written on that sheet, after that they asked questions from Evidence, CPC, Contract, Torts and IPC.  I remember most of the questions; they asked a few hypothetical questions related to vicarious liability, strict liability, defamation, void agreement and voidable contracts. They also asked direct questions related to topics like res judicata, estoppel, injunction, and general defences etc.

     

    What kind of work do you have to do there? How is the experience so far?

    I got posted in the divisional office, my work is mostly related to motor third party claims, consumer cases, workman compensation cases etc.  We  also represent the company in matters of arbitration.  In higher offices like regional office and head office people also have work related to ombudsman cases, agreement drafting and other corporate related work.  Up to scale 3 normally officers handle the department in which they are specialized but after that they will have to take additional burden of other department. In my office I am the only legal specialist, therefore the workload is more than what I was expecting at the time of joining.  As a young officer we are getting support from the higher authorities but at the same time expectation is also very high.  There are pros and cons in every job but my experience is very satisfactory till now.

     

    Does NIACL take interns? What is the process for same?

    NIACL is not taking interns but during our training program many new officers have suggested the higher authority to start taking interns to get better quality and giving opportunity to the students to understand actual work in general insurance sector which I think is very limited at present.  This will help both, the company as well as the students.  Our General Manager (HR) has responded positively, we are hoping that NIACL will start taking interns like other PSUs in coming years.

     

    Many law students strongly believe that getting a job while in law school s mostly about securing a high GPA. Would you agree?

    Not necessarily. It largely depends on the sector you are aiming for. As far as the corporate sector goes, good internships and publications weigh equally. As for the public sector and government jobs, a minimum percentage stipulated by them respectively is sufficient. A high GPA might always help you getting good internships though.

     

    If you could re-live your 5 years in Law school, is there something you would do differently?

    One could always say that something or other could have been better but as far as I see it was perfect and given a chance to live another  5 years at NLIU, I would live them the same way I did 3 years ago.

     

    Lastly, what would be your parting message for our readers?

    Always try to make decisions on your own, taking advice or sharing experience is good but at the end you should feel comfortable in whatever you are doing.  Something can’t be right or wrong only because majority is in favour of that.  Instead of complaining, try to make the most out of the opportunities which you are getting during 5 years in law school.  Lastly and most importantly enjoy every moment and contribute as much you can to the place where you are spending the most important half decade of your life.
