Reflecting on your journey from studying law to becoming a director at Vikas Sharma & Co Ltd, what specific moments or individuals inspired you to pursue a career in law? What were some of the challenges you faced and how did you overcome them?
I come from a lineage of lawyers, with my maternal great grandfather practicing in Hissar, Haryana, and both my grandfather and father in Ratangarh, Rajasthan. Growing up in Ratangarh, I was deeply influenced by the respect lawyers commanded in a small town. Visits to court with my father and uncles were frequent, and the court premises felt like a second home. Initially, my interest wasn’t in the law itself but in the sweets and pampering I received from my father’s clients and lawyer friends. However, over time as I grew older, observing my family’s dedication and the impact they had on people’s lives inspired me to pursue law seriously.
My father, the late Shri Shyam Sunder Sharma, played a crucial role in encouraging me to aim higher and move to the Supreme Court. I learned not only how to prepare a case from him, but also how being a lawyer is more than just a business but a way to help people and enjoy the process. One of the pivotal moments was my working with Group Captain Karan Singh Bhati at the Supreme Court of India, where I gained invaluable experience representing the State of Rajasthan. Group Captain Bhati was then standing counsel for Rajasthan.
The passing of my father and two uncles was a significant emotional challenge, prompting me to move to Scotland for a master’s degree in law. This move was both a personal and professional turning point, allowing me to start afresh in a new environment. The journey was filled with obstacles, but the support of mentors like Mr. Vincent Buffoni and Mr Matthew Cohen, and my persistence in adapting to new legal systems, helped me overcome these challenges.
Can you share the journey of how you transitioned from practicing various areas of law to specializing exclusively in immigration law? What motivated this shift?
The transition to specializing in immigration law was largely serendipitous. Once I qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales, I joined Vincent Buffoni & Co, a central London law firm. While working with Mr Vincent Buffoni, an Oxford graduate who was very humble and thorough, I gained experience in UK immigration law. Initially, barristers handled appeal hearings, but Mr. Buffoni trusted my abilities enough for me to represent clients. After gaining hands-on experience in immigration cases, I became interested in the field more deeply earlier
Having worked in London for a few years, I returned to Scotland where I had earlier completed my LLM degree. Since English and Scottish legal jurisdictions are separate, I had to pass conversion exams to become a Scottish solicitor. My litigation background allowed me to handle all kinds of court matters when I moved to Aberdeen and joined Mathew Cohen and Associates Ltd. There was, however, an increase in demand for immigration law services. Aberdeen, being the oil capital of Europe, had a clientele that required legal assistance for complex immigration issues. A growing number of cases and the complexity involved led me to focus almost exclusively on immigration law, which I found intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding.
With over 20 years of experience, what key insights have you gained about the intricacies and challenges within immigration law that may not be apparent to those outside the field?
One key insight is the profound impact of immigration law on individuals’ lives. It’s not just about legal procedures but about people’s futures, their ability to stay with their families, and their livelihood. The emotional and personal stakes are incredibly high, which adds a layer of complexity and responsibility to each case.
Another challenge is the ever-evolving nature of immigration law. Policies and regulations change frequently, requiring constant learning and adaptation. Navigating these changes while advocating effectively for clients demands meticulous attention to detail and a comprehensive understanding of both the legal and human aspects of each case.
Could you please provide examples of some of the most complex immigration cases you’ve handled and how you approached resolving them? What lessons did you learn from these experiences?
Compared to London and other major cities in the UK, Aberdeen’s clientele is different. As Aberdeen is an oil capital in Europe, most of the clients are well educated professionals working in the oil industry. Therefore, they engage you only when a case is too complex for them to handle. As a result, almost all of my cases are quite complex. It was last week that I argued an appeal in which the UK government refused the appellant’s permanent residence/indefinite leave to remain application because the appellant has served a non-custodial sentence in a criminal case. The Home Office lawyer accepted before the judge that the application should not have been refused given that the appellant’s application to work in the UK had been approved despite a criminal conviction. In my argument, I relied on the principle of legitimate expectation, which was well received by the Home Office lawyer. We had another appeal where the husband of one of our clients was being removed from the UK due to criminal convictions. As a result of hugging his coworkers, he was convicted. It was my contention that the immigration rules that governed his removal contained an element of discretion. In this case, neither the UK government recognized or explained why discretion inherent in the immigration rule was exercised against the appellant. The judge allowed the appeal. Another case involved a Thai lady who was married to a British national and they had two British children. After the marriage ended, the British husband relocated to another part of the UK with the children. Due to the expiration of her visa and lack of funds, our client was able to move to the new city where her ex-husband and children had moved. Since her children lived away from her, the UK government refused her application on the ground that she was not actively involved in the upbringing of the children. Despite living away from her children due to circumstances beyond her control, I argued that she still had a genuine and enduring relationship with them. The appeal was dismissed, as were the applications to the Upper Tribunal. As a result of the Court of Session’s intervention, the matter was referred to the Upper Tribunal, where the appeal was ultimately allowed.
The lessons I learned from cases in which I didn’t receive a successful outcome initially are that ultimately success will be attained if the legal point is in our favor regardless of how many judges dislike it.
What inspired you to establish your own law firm, Vikas Sharma & Co Ltd, in Aberdeen? How does it differentiate itself in terms of approach and client experience compared to other firms in the area? Also, what challenges did you come across during the initial days of your firm?
I joined Matthew Cohen Associates as the head of the immigration law department in 2010. It was in 2018 that I joined The Chamber Practice as a partner. Since I was running both firms’ immigration law departments, I was responsible for providing the best service to my clients. As a result, setting up Vikas Sharma and Co Ltd did not make a significant difference in the way the firm assisted clients. Having my name on my firm helped my previous clients find me and gave me more freedom to run my business. Besides the procedural requirements for setting up a law firm in Scotland, which are quite onerous, I had no problems because I have been serving people here for more than 15 years and my previous clients found me through Google reviews.
Considering your background as an advocate in the Supreme Court of India, how do you perceive the differences in legal systems between India and the UK? Are there any insights from your experience in India that you apply to your practice in the UK?
The process of preparing a case for court and presenting it to the court does not seem to differ much between India and Scotland. However, there are many other distinct differences, such as the requirement that a law firm be insured before starting to practise, and the Law Society of Scotland is much more strict in its regulation of this profession than Indian bar councils. At the outset, lawyers here are required to provide engagement letters outlining the costs involved and how unhappy clients can make complaints. The Law Society of Scotland regularly inspects law firms to ensure compliance with rules of practice. Keeping the office and clients’ bank accounts up-to-date is a mandatory requirement. Generally, lawyers specialize in one area of law, such as family law, immigration law, or criminal law. Lawyers must advise clients efficiently because the cost of cases can be enormous, otherwise, they will be liable for claims and complaints. Once the pleadings are complete and the case is ready to proceed to the evidence stage, the lawyers of the parties determine if their client’s case deserves to proceed to the next stage since the client could end up paying the other party’s legal costs. As far as I’m concerned, the Scottish legal profession is much more strictly regulated than that in India.
Transitioning from practicing law in India to establishing yourself in the UK legal system must have been a significant change. Could you share your experiences and insights regarding this transition? What were some of the biggest challenges you faced, and how did you adapt your legal expertise to the new environment?
Interestingly enough, I struggled little to establish myself as a lawyer here. Vincent Buffoni, the partner of the central law firm and an Oxford graduate, had earlier shown me trust, and later Matthew Cohen, a principal of a Scottish law firm, gave me an opportunity to appear in Scottish courts. In this region, I am the only Indian lawyer and have even appeared in smaller towns such as Peterhead and Stonehaven where English is spoken in a very different accent. In terms of my work, speaking English with an Indian accent or my origin has not had any adverse effects. My experience as a lawyer in India extends even to smaller towns such as Ratangarh and Shri Dungargarh, as well as the High Courts of Rajasthan and Delhi and the Supreme Court of India. Having moved from a small town to a higher court already prepared me to handle the changes and adapt to them. I believe that when it comes to practising as a lawyer, there are certain requirements regardless of the country or court: knowledge of facts, knowledge of applicable law, understanding the stakes for the client, empathy towards the client, and the ability to represent the client before a judge.
Any new court requires adaptation, whether it is the District Court of India or the Supreme Court of India. In the same way, adapting to the courts of the UK involves a series of steps. As part of my adaptation process, I sought guidance from experienced colleagues and continued learning about the nuances of the UK legal system. A crucial step toward becoming an English and Scottish solicitor was passing the conversion exams. Additionally, I qualified as a solicitor in Ireland and worked with a firm there in 2017. I was able to successfully navigate this transition by embracing the differences and leveraging my foundational legal expertise.
With your wealth of experience in the legal profession, what advice would you offer to the new generation of aspiring solicitors and advocates who are just beginning their careers, particularly those interested in specializing in immigration law?
For aspiring solicitors and advocates, my advice is to develop a deep understanding of the law and stay updated with the latest developments. Immigration law is a dynamic field, and continuous learning is essential. Practical experience through internships and mentorship from seasoned professionals is invaluable.
Specializing in immigration law requires empathy, patience, and a genuine desire to help people. Building strong client relationships and maintaining integrity in your practice are crucial. Always approach each case with meticulous preparation and a commitment to achieving the best outcome for your clients.
We may enter this noble profession motivated by the motivation to help people, but it is the discipline that earns us credibility and reputation with clients, colleagues, and the judicial system.
Due to the ever-changing nature of immigration law in the UK, no one can claim to be an expert. It is therefore important that we stay on top of any amendments to the rules, regulations, policies, and statutes as students of law.
With the demands of your legal career, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial. Could you share some of your favorite ways to relax and unwind outside of the office? How do these activities contribute to your overall well-being and productivity in your professional life?
When I am in control of my work, I feel relaxed. Consequently, I try to answer all my emails and phone calls by the end of the day. If I am unable to complete the work, I email the client when I will complete it. In the end, it comes down to managing the expectations of others.
After a difficult day at work, watching a good movie or web series helps me unwind. Since I have a sweet tooth, I run approximately 5 kilometers a day and do push-ups and squats on alternate days. Scotland is close to nature and picturesque, so I have chosen to settle there. It is relaxing to take a drive in the Scottish countryside and to have an Indian cup of tea to clear my mind. In spite of living in Scotland for almost 20 years, I remain a teetotaler and a vegetarian, so I still drown my stress in tea rather than Scotch.
Could you share a bit about your journey from starting as a litigator to becoming a business lawyer? How has your overseas experience shaped your approach as a business lawyer, and what valuable insights have you gained from working across diverse legal landscapes?
When I joined the legal profession, it was the norm to work with a senior practitioner in the courts. My first job was with Mr. Pran Nath Talwar, a senior advocate at the Delhi High Court who was the Standing Counsel for DDA. I worked with him for two years, from July 1986 to July 1988. Mr. Talwar was a stellar lawyer with a razor-sharp mind. Every day he regaled me with stories about the law, about life and always insisted we read the jurisprudence deeply and fully and learn how to apply it. He underscored the devil is always in the detail and to ensure we know full facts before starting to think of the merits or demerits of a case. I was fortunate to get solid grounding with him.
Subsequently, I left for the US to study further and then had opportunities to work there. My work with the large US law firms exposed me to and gave me insights on the western large firm model functioning – a deeper and different kind of professional ethics, to structured processes and systems, to development of a profound sense of responsibility for the advice we give to clients on the basis of which corporations were going to take decisions, to concepts of negligence if our advice was incomplete or inaccurate. After I moved to Paris, initially for a year, in a pre-Google era, I confronted different challenges including juggling work in a country where the native language was not English and I did not speak a word of French. I had no option but to take up the challenge and do what I had to. I was thrown into the deep end of the pool and simply had to figure out how to swim if I did not want to drown. I did not get anything easy, and, in hindsight, I am glad it was that way. Eventually, my one year in Paris became five!
Since my formative professional years were spent overseas, my work experience in both the US and in Europe shaped me enormously and provided insights on how to work which now, over decades, are part of my DNA! My clients reinforced that transparency is key when advising and it is best to be direct, without providing circuitous or ambiguous counsel. Eventually, we must remember they act on our recommendations, relying on our expertise. Plus, there is always a human impact as eventually people implement. So, it is crucial to understand the ramifications of what we say, when we say, and how we say. The work environment coupled with the commitment and diligence towards the tiniest of matters made me realize that regardless of the country, some key fundamentals are global: work hard truly, honestly with the key objective of securing the best result for your client and it will not evade you. All my lessons, professional learnings and value systems garnered from my clients, peers and seniors from around the globe always pointed to one thing only – work hard and the results will come. I suppose it is the age-old wisdom from the Bhagavad Gita. I firmly subscribe to the view that there are no shortcuts to success. Let your work speak for you and do not look for excuses.
Congratulations on being named “Woman Lawyer of the Year – India & Middle East” and the recipient of the “Mayre Rasmussen Award” for promoting gender equality. How do these accolades impact your commitment to gender sensitization, women empowerment and equality within the legal profession?
Thank you very much. Of course, I am very grateful, but the accolades came much later. Legal awards are a relatively recent development, while I have been personally, deeply committed to the advancement and nurturing of women lawyers in India since I returned to set up the practice. As a first-generation woman lawyer, setting my own firm in the late 90s was a huge challenge in every aspect, be it law firm management, execution of work, finding and training teams. Slowly, but surely, I wanted to try to make a difference and help in gender sensitization, women empowerment and equality. The legal profession is changing so rapidly everywhere, Indian women need to be equipped to handle the change and how the future is likely to impact their practice, be it of solo practitioners in courts or within law firms or in-house positions. While the education system has undergone a change, and the information highway is at everyone’s fingertips, yet most prospective lawyers are unprepared for life with the law. This requires more practical courses and skillful use of interns. All of us who are experienced at the Bar need to contribute to bring about that transformation. There is a dire need to focus on professional development, which must be matched by a desire to grow as well by women protagonists.
I think it is essential to focus on the reasons why organizations should create sustainability for women in the legal profession. There should be strategies in place for nurturing our own careers and those of the women following us. I have looked at this issue often, both in India and overseas. It is essential to address the issues from a positive perspective and focus on what women lawyers can and should do to participate in their own success and the success of those who follow them. Despite a lot of progress in the law firm world, we still have “miles to go.” I could articulate more, but I think these are enough for the moment. After over three and half decades in the law, I feel the legal world needs to be more open to change as we come together to share experiences and aid in finding solutions at a local, national and even transborder level.
You’ve authored books and contributed to various publications. How does thought leadership play a role in shaping discussions on legal issues, and what motivated you to share your insights through books?
So, for me, as a first gen lawyer in an era where technology had not really evolved, I had to devise ways and means to showcase my capabilities while building a practice. Writing came naturally to me. Plus, while navigating through the labyrinth of varied laws, regulations, guidelines, I would often be flummoxed at the lack of clarity, even amongst those who implemented those laws. The challenge was always to find answers in simple words. As a result, I thought writing and publishing would be a tool to demonstrate subject matter knowledge plus say it in a manner which would be easy for the reader to understand. I still feel the same.
As a Board member of the International Technology Law Association, how do you see the intersection of technology and law evolving, and what legal challenges and opportunities do you anticipate in this space?
I firmly believe whether we like it or not, rapid developments in technology have changed and are continuing to change how people consume, interact, play and work. Like it or not, AI, Big Data, blockchain, cybersecurity, Fintech, IoT, privacy are here to stay and an integral part of daily lives.
While government policies will influence the direction of technological developments, laws and regulations will undoubtedly need to match and address the new reality. Some people fear developments in the foregoing areas will somehow replace human interactions and, eventually, make us shed our human persona. Others believe these innovations will benefit humanity and help solve many problems of today and potentially of the future. As companies navigate through these changes and await effective enforcement of new legislation, one key challenge is how to gear up for the future and the need to formulate internal rules that comply with strictest global standards in place in other parts of the world or wait to match with local requirements. Legislating and regulating developing technologies is complex, and it becomes way more complex when crossing borders. A balance between global and local rules with some degree of self-regulation will be the need of the hour. Another problem is legislation can take far too long. Look what happened to the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and the number of years and iterations it has taken to pass this law. More than 4.5 months after the DPDP Act was passed, we still await the rules. In the tech world, this feels like eternity. Finally, I want to touch on cybercrime and data breaches which have grown exponentially even when compared with the start of the pandemic. A systemic threat of cybersecurity risks is the talk of most boardrooms. But while awareness is growing many directors simply are unsure if they have the information and tools to effectively handle today’s dangers. The massive digital transformation requires robust cybersecurity and privacy laws. The Indian government must put in place far more effective mechanisms to regulate cybersecurity and cybercrime effectively.
Can you share a particularly challenging or memorable deal you’ve worked on? How did you navigate complexities to ensure a successful outcome?
There are many that come to mind, but I will talk about one. I was in Europe for business and had to travel to the US for client meetings. Meanwhile, the Iraq war started which led to companies imposing travel embargoes. I had a tricky transaction that was to close later that week in Delhi. The business and legal team of the client wanted me to travel to India but I had commitments. I managed to convince them to let me stick to my travel schedule, and committed that I would be available to work with my team and the other side according to Indian time that week to ensure closing occurs timely. They agreed. As I was about to board the plane for New York, I got a call from my colleague in Delhi who said there was a problem, which was really an issue of the counterparty. They realized and announced at the last minute, but the effect was the deal could be in jeopardy. We needed to inform the client, and I had to board my transatlantic flight. Oh, and the colleague was to wrap up work on this file and then leave for her wedding, which was 2 weeks later. I felt the flight from London to New York was crawling and just felt helpless due to lack of knowledge. Eventually, I succumbed and asked for a satellite phone, rang my office in Delhi and got all the facts. I knew the client would be unhappy to hear of the developments. Upon landing in NY, I connected with the business and legal people at the client where one was ready to call off the whole thing, while the other wanted to proceed.
The problem was that we needed regulatory intervention, and it is always tough to predict the duration a government agency may take. So, there were several moving pieces, and we had no idea how long the closing could take. I told the client if they wanted to proceed, I would find a solution. I canceled my meetings in the US for the next few days, went to a travel agent and bought a ticket to fly to India. I must have been in the US for 5 hours from landing to heading again to the airport. I returned to Delhi as fast as I could, went directly to the office and stayed there for a week. We delayed the closing by a few days, drafted additional contracts to address the new developments which were negotiated each night between 10 PM to 2 AM and, finally, managed to get to the finishing line a week after the original scheduled date. It was tough both physically and mentally as I did not sleep for 3 or 4 days at all but worked non-stop. The satisfaction of a successful outcome with all sides happy was the adrenalin rush that kept us all going!
Juggling a dynamic legal career and contributing to various committees and associations can be challenging. How do you maintain balance in your professional and personal life? Any hobbies or activities that you turn to for relaxation?
Balance does not come easy for anyone, and it needs both method and time and for long-term gains, it is important to cultivate resilience. I meditate regularly, read, take time out for fitness, and find periods of silence, all of which is therapeutic. Then, my closest childhood friends are my rocks and always there for me, when I need to talk. I also think it is essential to create boundaries, personal and professional. I never did that for the longest time when I was building the firm, but I encourage all my colleagues to do so and do so myself as well now.
Looking ahead, how do you perceive the future of legal practice, especially considering the evolving dynamics of international business and technological advancements? What advice would you give to the coming generation of lawyers?
The legal landscape is at a very interesting phase undergoing rapid and radical change. Boundaries have blurred with digital and technology transformation. Then, competition has increased exponentially, putting pressure on firms and lawyers to be increasingly open to innovation. While the legal industry is known for sticking to tradition but for practices to thrive, lawyers must be aligned with developments in technology and emerging areas of practice, focus on building skills and learn effective, consistent communication, both internal and external. Never forget clients demand efficiency, transparency, personalized service. I firmly believe lawyers have the potential to seize challenges and convert them to opportunities.
Sir, can you share your journey from working as an Associate to becoming the Managing Partner at The Valid Points Law Offices? What motivated you to establish your own law firm in 2023?
Absolutely, I appreciate the opportunity to share this journey. The trajectory from an Associate to the position of Managing Partner at The Valid Points Law Offices is an intricate tapestry of professional growth, personal revelations, and a deepening commitment to my ethical practice, committed client service and effortless relationship management.
Starting as an Associate, I was initiated into the world of legal practice under the aegis of seasoned professionals. This foundational period was critical. My days were characterized by exhaustive research, drafting legal memoranda, interfacing with clients, and assisting senior attorneys in court proceedings. As an Associate, one learns not just the letter of the law, but its spirit. It was a period of intense learning, where every case and every client interaction added a new dimension to my understanding of the legal profession.
As years rolled by, I gradually climbed the ladder of hierarchy in the firm, transitioning from a Senior Associate to a Joint Partner. This phase was marked by increased responsibilities. I was now leading teams, handling more complex cases, and directly strategizing our approach to advisory and management roles. The transition also brought with it the need to mentor younger associates, something I found deeply fulfilling. It gave me an opportunity to give back, to share the insights I had gleaned over the years, and to shape the next generation of lawyers.
The decision to move towards the role of a Managing Partner was not one I took lightly. It was precipitated by a combination of factors. My vast experience, the trust and respect I had garnered from peers and clients, and an innate desire to shape the direction of the firm all played a part. As a Managing Partner, my role transcended beyond mere legal practice. It now encompassed administrative responsibilities, shaping the firm’s vision and mission, ensuring its financial health, fostering a conducive work environment, and setting high standards of professional conduct and ethics.
The year 2023 was a watershed moment in my career. The decision to establish The Valid Points Law Offices emanated from a deep-seated desire to craft a legal institution that was reflective of my beliefs and principles. Over the years, I had identified gaps in the legal service delivery model, areas that could benefit from innovation, and sectors that were underserved. The Valid Points Law Offices was conceptualized to address these very gaps. Another motivating factor was the rapidly evolving legal landscape. The dawn of the digital age, the globalization of businesses, and the increasing complexity of legal issues demanded a fresh approach, a new kind of law firm that was agile, forward-thinking, and deeply committed to excellence.
Furthermore, my interactions with clients over the years made me realize the importance of a client-centric approach. Clients were not just seeking legal advice; they were in pursuit of holistic solutions, of partnerships that added value to their endeavors. With your extensive background in corporate and commercial law, what inspired you to focus on sectors such as e-commerce, edtech, fintech, and medtech? What unique challenges and opportunities do these sectors present from a legal perspective?
The transition of my focus to sectors like e-commerce, edtech, fintech, and medtech was not merely an arbitrary choice but a conscious decision influenced by a myriad of factors, both personal and professional. The proliferation of the internet and the ubiquitous nature of smartphones and digital devices have fundamentally transformed the way businesses operate and consumers interact. As a legal practitioner with a background in corporate and commercial law, it became imperative for me to remain au courant with these seismic shifts in the market and to understand their implications on the legal domain.
The surge in e-commerce is a direct consequence of the digital revolution. As brick-and-mortar stores gradually gave way to online platforms, new legal challenges emerged. Issues related to consumer protection, data privacy, cross-border transactions, and digital taxation became prominent. What further intrigued me about e-commerce was its inherent interdisciplinary nature. It amalgamated elements of contract law, intellectual property rights, competition law, and more. This confluence presented a rich tapestry of legal challenges and opportunities, making it an irresistible area of focus.
The edtech sector, or educational technology, represents the confluence of education and technology. My interest in this sector was piqued by its potential to democratize education. However, with this potential came a slew of legal challenges. IP issues in content creation, data protection of student information, regulatory compliance for educational institutions operating online, and issues related to accreditation and recognition of online degrees were areas that required legal navigation.
The financial sector’s evolution, spurred by technology, has been nothing short of revolutionary. Digital wallets, cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, and online banking platforms have radically altered the financial landscape. But with these innovations arose a plethora of legal issues. Regulatory compliance, anti-money laundering protocols, digital fraud prevention, and the legal status of cryptocurrencies were areas that demanded in-depth legal scrutiny. The dynamic nature of the fintech sector, coupled with its profound impact on the global economy, made it an area of both challenge and opportunity for a legal professional.
The medtech sector, encompassing innovations in medical technology, stood out due to its direct impact on human lives. With advancements like telemedicine, wearable health devices, and AI-driven diagnostic tools, the medical field witnessed unprecedented growth. But these advancements brought forth legal challenges. You’ve graduated with a Bachelor in Engineering and then went on to pursue Law from the University of Delhi. What motivated you to switch your stream and pursue law?
It was demotivation that actually motivated me to do law. I was tired of the monotonous routine offered by my previous job and to break that I enrolled in an evening college offered by Delhi University at that time and thereby I entered into law and for some time I was pursuing Job as well as law side by side. But then I quit my job and entered into law and restarted my career as an Intern. Believe me, it is the most difficult task to abandon a good career and restart as an intern in a totally unrelated field and that was the actual motivation to take the law very seriously. Motivation is overrated as I was not that motivated but I had no choice other than to pursue law seriously and improve. It is a consistent effort to become better which actually worked.
You have been actively taking up Pro-Bono cases and have done a lot of free service in your career trajectory? How important is it for Law Students and professionals to take up Pro-Bono cases and help the needy?
At the initial stage, maybe for 2-3 years, you should not think about the fee as the experience you will gain will work wonders in years to come. That will compensate for free or pro bono work. I recommend enrolling with legal service authority in the initial years and helping the society and when you become established in your field then also devote some time to Pro Bono activities.
Not all students manage to get into good law colleges let alone NLUs. How did you, as an engineering student, become fortunate?
It is not about college or fortune. It is about how desperate are you? How needy are you? How much hunger do you have? When something is not working, we blame our college, the circumstances and our background. Instead of improving ourselves, putting hours in grooming our skills, we blame them. Your college or background has nothing to do with it. It is your hunger to achieve more.
Can you walk us through your day in life? What is the life of a Founder of a reputed law firm and a renowned lawyer?
I have to reach 10 AM to court if it is an argument, then have to spend a few hours preparing that too in the morning, so you can say, I have to start at 6 AM or 7 AM in the morning.
Between 10 AM to 4 PM I have to be in court and come to the office at 4 PM or 5 PM then have to start preparing for conferences scheduled for that day. Drafting work and preparation work for the upcoming day is delegated to associates who briefs me by EOD.
At 7 PM when I finish with conferences, I get briefs from associates and plan for the next day.
At 8 PM-9 PM, you-tubing and blogging are scheduled.
On weekends, I focus mainly on Judgement reading and conferences.
How has social media impacted your career?
As a first-generation lawyer, I started blogging in 2014, started youtube 2018 and LinkedIn in 2021 so the impact is huge as 90% of clients come through these platforms.
It is now close to a decade that you have been a Practising Advocate at the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and also are the Founder of LexSpeak Legal. What kept you motivated all the way long?
Again, I would say motivation is overrated. Someday you will feel motivated and someday you may not. It is consistent efforts and working on different cases, handling challenges that have worked.
Can you share with us what it is like to build a clientele from scratch? What tips would you like to share with the aspiring lawyers?
I was blogging for almost 7 years so it was my source but there are many sources for beginners like offering free legal advice on various online/offline platforms, joining legal aid, acting as proxy counsel for various seniors which in future may refer your matters. Socializing/Networking. Taking lead in legally solving social issues.
What key tips do you suggest to the lawyers representing in the Courts?
Well, I am still learning things so I am not at that level to give advice or tips. But I would like to emphasize that apart from legal skills lawyers should develop allied skills like marketing, accounting, finance, blogging, business management.
