    Being an AOR today with nearly a decade of experience, what initially motivated you to pursue law as a career? Was there a defining factor that guided this decision?

    If I was to sum up my decision to opt for law, I would say that I was running away from engineering and landed up at law school. Law was not the obvious choice for me initially. I was a science student in school and my parents wanted me to prepare for competitive exams and pursue engineering as engineering was the obvious choice for all science students, however, very early on in 11th standard in school, I realized that it was not my cup of tea. I wanted more than just a simple 9 to 5 desk job. I wanted a career which would make me look forward to work everyday and also give me an opportunity to serve the society and that is how law, especially litigation became the obvious choice for me.

    In your early years, you worked with various lawyers and law firms. What were some of the experiences that laid the foundation for your practice, and how did you deepen your understanding of law during that period?

    I consider myself extremely fortunate to have worked with some of the greatest minds in the field of litigation very early on in my career. After completing law, my focus was to learn the complexities of litigation and understand the world of Trial Courts. I had initially joined the chamber of Mr. Ratan. Kumar Singh, Senior Advocate where I learned about arbitration and commercial litigation which was an enriching experience. Later, I joined BAV Partners where I got to work with Mr. Vibhor Garg, whom I deeply regard as he gave me ample opportunities to appear before various courts in Delhi. Mr. Garg encouraged me to argue matters independently and to cross examine witnesses whenever required which honestly laid down the foundation of the litigator that I am today. I also worked at a prestigious law firm like Dentons Link Legal where I saw the more organized and structured side of litigation and arbitration and handled some high-stake matters under the guidance of Mr. Atul Sharma and Mr. Ravi Varma who are both luminaries of the legal fraternity. 

    What challenges did you face being a first-generation lawyer?

    Just like any other profession, litigation also has its share of challenges and being a first-generation lawyer sometimes puts that extra burden on your shoulders, however, I am a firm believer that first generation lawyers should stay away from these negative debates of “insider-outsider”. Thinking too much on these lines will put you in a negative loop and divert your focus from important things. Rather than focusing on other people’s plate, one should put their head down and focus on improving core skills that a litigator requires. At the end of the day consistency and hard work can beat any kind of legacy.

    After almost five years in the legal industry, you took the step of establishing your own practice with Adel Legal. What inspired this decision, and what initial hurdles did you face in setting up your firm?

    From day one of me joining litigation, I was absolutely clear that someday I will set up my independent practice/firm. Though it always confused me as to what should be the timing of going independent and how much experience would be enough to go independent. Later, I realised that there is no straight jacket formula to this and everyone has their own circumstances. I knew that as I progressed in the world of law firms, both remuneration and responsibilities would increase but my risk-taking capacity would decrease. Hence, I thought the sooner the better for me and decided to take this calculated risk of going independent with just 5 years of experience.

    Having represented a wide range of clients, including banks, government entities, and foreign corporations before diverse judicial forums, what do you consider the most critical skills a litigator must develop to handle such varied cases effectively?

    To handle a wide range of cases effectively, a litigator must develop a robust set of core skills that transcend subject matter. Analytical & Strategic Thinking, Oral & Written Advocacy, Interpersonal & Negotiation Skills are important to name a few. A litigator must have a good sense of judgment and he must know when to push aggressively versus when to negotiate or settle. Also, litigation is adversarial and often high-stress. The ability to maintain focus, motivation, and composure through long, contentious cases is essential.

    With your experience in arbitrations under international institutions such as ICC, SIAC, and LCIA, how do you see the role of international arbitration evolving for Indian practitioners and clients in the coming years?

    I am extremely positive about the role of international arbitration evolving for Indian practitioners and clients in the coming years. Practitioners need to stay abreast of legislative reforms, institutional rules changes, and emerging jurisprudence. Indian parties are very active users of foreign arbitration institutions for international contracts. At the same time, there is increased demand for India‑seated or Indian institutions to handle international arbitrations, which reflects growing trust in domestic institutions. The Supreme Court and High Courts have increasingly issued pro‑arbitration judgments, pushing back against unnecessary judicial interference in arbitral awards, enforcing foreign awards.

    Having represented the Government of Delhi before the Delhi High Court, what has been one of the most challenging cases in your practice, and how did you approach and handle it?

    Handling Government litigation often involves chasing various departments, officials and civil servants for the required instructions, which is an additional challenge. I had recently worked on a case where government land worth hundreds of crores right in the heart of south Delhi had been encroached upon and even sale deeds were executed which were used to claim title over the said land leading to loss of revenue for government authorities. However, with the correct strategy and timely instructions, we were successfully able to defend the possession of the government authorities over the said land. 

    How has been your experience of working as Jail Visiting Advocate with the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee?

    I got empanelled as a Jail Visiting Advocate with the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee in the year 2022. I visit various jails in Delhi every week and interact with prisoners to know their grievances and ensure that they get the required legal help and adequate representation before the High Court of Delhi and Supreme Court of India. I file bail applications for under trial prisoners and file appeals on behalf of inmates who have been convicted by trial courts. I have closely experienced the working of jails and have tried to contribute in making lives better for the prisoners. Overall, it has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my career.

    What resources or methods do you rely on to stay updated with the latest legal developments, and what advice would you give to students aspiring to enter litigation? What habits should they build early in their careers?

    One doesn’t need subscriptions of any legal database or fancy website to stay updated on legal issues. The website of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and various High Courts are good enough to keep you updated about the latest judgments and legal trends. But one must develop the habit of reading.

    I consider myself a student of law and still learn from my mistakes, so I am not sure what advice I can offer but I can list down couple of mistakes I made in my career and would request my young friends joining litigation to avoid the same if possible:

    • Not doing enough internships with litigators and Judges.
    • Not networking enough from the very beginning.

    I learnt it the hard way but the above mistakes can be avoided. Be Patient: Litigation takes time to pay off.

    Becoming an AOR is a significant achievement. Could you share your journey towards this milestone and the responsibilities it brings to your role?

    The Supreme Court of India conducts the AOR examination every year and the syllabus and study material can be found on the Supreme Court’s website. Preparation for the AOR exam was a learning curve, however, since I had been in practice for many years, that experience along with a solid strategy helped me sail through in my first attempt. Becoming an AOR and representing clients before the Supreme Court of India is a matter of great pride for me, but it does come with its share of responsibilities. The Supreme Court Rules and various landmark judgments of the Apex Court define the duties and responsibilities of an Advocate on Record. The Supreme Court only recognises AORs for the purposes of filing and an AOR can be held accountable for anything filed under his name and signature. But the biggest perk is that you get to file cases and represent clients from all parts of the country before the highest court of the land.

    Balancing multiple responsibilities as an AOR and as the founder of your own firm can be demanding. How do you manage to strike a balance between professional commitments and personal life?

    This is one challenge almost all litigators face in their lives, however, with effective time management one can easily wrap up work in reasonable working hours. I personally believe in putting in effective working hours and leaving office by 7pm and encourage associates at our firm to do the same. Unfortunately, at a lot of law firms working till late hours has become the new trend. I personally do not support or encourage that working style. Even in high-pressure environments, one should try to maintain core working hours and stick to them. Dinners with family, workouts, or personal hobbies should be treated as non-negotiable meetings.

    Growing up in Siliguri, far from the conventional legal hubs, what influenced your decision to pursue law, and how did your years at Chanakya National Law University shape your early perspective on the profession?

    Growing up in Siliguri and studying at Don Bosco School shaped me in many ways. At home, the environment was always encouraging. I was an average student in academics, but active in debates, quizzes, and other co-curricular activities. With the benefit of hindsight, those experiences built my confidence- something I still consider as my biggest asset. Initially, I was preparing for a career in engineering, but somewhere along the way, I realized it wasn’t something I could truly be passionate about. My parents stood by me wholeheartedly. It was then that I decided to choose law.

    My years at CNLU were truly defining. Coming from a younger NLU, we were always conscious that we had to work harder to stand out. A new institution brought with it both challenges and opportunities, and much like our university, we were eager to carve out our own space in the larger scheme of things. Those 5 years taught me the importance of taking ownership of one’s plans and seeing them through. Most importantly, CNLU gave me the final clarity that litigation – with all its pros and cons- was the path I really wanted to pursue. That conviction has guided almost every professional decision I have made thereon.

    In the initial phase of your career, you worked closely with the litigation team for over four years. What were some of the most formative experiences during this time, particularly in handling matters related to taxation, constitutional, and regulatory law?

    I began my career with the litigation team at PDS Legal, New Delhi, under Mr. Tarun Gulati. I had interned there during law school and was fortunate to receive a pre-placement offer in my final year. As someone new to both the city and the profession, I found tremendous support from my team and colleagues, who helped me settle in and grow.

    The foundation of my advocacy was built at PDS Legal- right from drafting and preparing a matter to eventually presenting it in court. If there is one lesson I particularly carry from those years, it is that effort alone is not enough; planning and organisation are equally critical. Clients and colleagues alike value a professional who is methodical in approach. My seniors were patient and supportive, and my peers were always helpful, which kept the momentum going in what could otherwise have been a daunting phase. Looking back, my time at PDS Legal not only gave me the skills but also the confidence and clarity to eventually venture out and establish my independent practice.

    Transitioning from a structured law firm environment to establishing your independent practice in 2021 must have been a pivotal moment. What motivated this move, and what were the initial challenges and learnings in setting up on your own?

    I had always wanted to establish my own practice. The satisfaction of building something of your own is unparalleled, and that desire kept me motivated. At the same time, my early days in litigation taught me that there is only so much you can prepare from the sidelines – you have to take the plunge, start from scratch and build gradually.

    The switch was not easy. Coming from a law firm where I was constantly working on heavy matters to suddenly having only a handful of briefs was a stark contrast. It is natural to have doubts and question your decision. But if you ask me, the real trick is to hang in there. Independent litigation is a choice you make every single day, despite the distractions and the reasons that may tempt you to leave. In the end, this profession rewards perseverance and patience. If you stay the course and keep developing yourself, things do fall into place.

    Since then, you have handled a wide spectrum of commercial, criminal, and civil disputes. Could you share one of the most challenging cases from your independent practice that significantly strengthened your confidence as a litigator?

    It is difficult to pinpoint a single case that became the fulcrum of my practice. For me, it has been a series of moments that reassured me I had made the right choice in setting up independently. One such matter was when a doctor’s license to practice had been suspended by a High Court in a contempt proceeding. I had the opportunity to lead the matter in the Supreme Court, and we managed to secure the desired relief. That case gave me something invaluable at that stage- acknowledgment, financial stability, and, most importantly, confidence as a litigator.

    Another turning point was when I first started handling criminal matters. Having had little exposure to criminal law during my time at the firm, those cases initially felt daunting. But they also reinforced a simple truth: in litigation, effort makes all the difference. If you are willing to put in that extra bit of preparation, you will eventually find your footing. Both these experiences strengthened my belief that perseverance pays, and that independent practice, though challenging, was the right path for me.

    In 2025, you achieved the distinction of becoming an Advocate-on-Record. What inspired you to pursue this qualification, how was your preparation journey, and in what ways has the AoR title impacted your practice and professional opportunities?

    Becoming an Advocate-on-Record was always a clear goal for me once I started my independent practice. Practising in Delhi makes you realize very early how competitive the profession is, and that the Supreme Court is the final stop for matters from across the country. When you pitch for mandates in the Supreme Court, the first question often asked is- Are you an AoR? If your answer is no, it does have a bearing, especially with clients outside Delhi. Qualifying the exam, therefore, gives you that foot-in-the-door and instills an additional layer of confidence in clients.

    Preparing for the exam definitely demands seriousness. Like most who clear it, I had to balance practice with study, which sometimes may get a bit difficult. I was fortunate to have friends and seniors who supported me—whether with study materials or helping me manage my matters. But I believe one thing must be acknowledged: preparing for the AoR exam is in itself an enriching experience. Irrespective of the result, you come out a better professional.

    Alongside your practice, you often engage with law students through moots and guest lectures. How do you view the balance between active practice and mentoring the next generation of lawyers?

    I genuinely enjoy interacting with students- there’s always a fresh perspective and a new learning to take away. Having been on that side of the spectrum myself, I know how good it is to have people from the profession engage with you. Judging moots or delivering guest lectures is also a great way to sharpen my own legal acumen, whenever you discuss an issue, you inevitably end up learning too. Balancing it with active practice is not always easy, but whenever I get the opportunity, I truly enjoy taking it up.

    Looking ahead, with your growing independent chamber and experience across varied domains, what vision do you hold for your practice over the next decade, and what advice would you offer to young lawyers aspiring to build a career in litigation?

    For me, every professional is a brand in himself, and the journey is really about improving that brand each day. My vision over the next few years is to evolve as a reliable practitioner and to build a team that is known for being effective and dependable in the legal community. Reputation in this profession takes years to build but can be lost in a moment, so the aim is to grow steadily, sincerely- and also to enjoy the process along the way.

    I don’t think I am in a position to give advice, but I can share my story. If there’s one thing I have learnt, it is that this profession rewards patience, perseverance, and planning. At the same time, litigation is not a one-time choice; it’s something you must choose every single day despite the distractions and difficulties. And while doing all of this, it is equally important to have fun and enjoy the process- because that’s what makes the journey worthwhile.

    With new legal developments and judicial precedents emerging almost daily, how do you keep yourself updated on the latest trends and ensure that your practice stays aligned with the evolving legal landscape?

    For me, curiosity and social consciousness are an asset in this profession. A lawyer should always be curious about the things happening around him, both inside and outside the courtroom. I genuinely enjoy reading, and I feel any lawyer who enjoys reading will always have an edge. We live in an age where information is power, and with technology, access to that information has become much easier than it used to be. There are plenty of platforms today that help us stay updated with what’s happening around.

    But beyond books and screens, our courts themselves are exciting places to learn. I’ve often found that indulging in conversations in the corridors, sometimes over a simple cup of coffee, leaves you walking away with more insight than you bargained for. That in itself sounds like a good deal !

    With nearly 12 years of impressive experience in the legal field, what initially inspired you to pursue a career in law? Which aspects of the profession resonated with you the most, and how did your time at NALSAR University of Law shape your legal journey?

    I wish I had a more elevated answer to give you on what inspired me to become a lawyer. I think I was 10 years old when I got into a playful argument with my uncle. His son in law watched the entire episode and causally remarked that I should become a lawyer. I said “sure” and from that day I didn’t even conceive of an alternative career. In short, I have my brother in law to credit (or blame, depending on how the day is going). 

    The way I’ve looked at the profession has changed quite a bit from the time I chose to become a lawyer. Like many other first generation lawyers, my understanding of what a lawyer does was informed by TV shows, movies and books. Of course, NALSAR and my internships during my time in law school made me realise the difference between fiction and reality. During my five years in law school, I was fairly certain that I would litigate – though for the longest time I don’t think I really knew why. Quite naively, I conceived of a career as a lawyer from only two perspectives – litigating lawyer and transactional lawyer.  I had tried my hand at corporate law during my internships, and by the process of elimination I knew I did not want to become a transactional lawyer. I also had a keen interest in debating and public speaking, so  a career that enabled me to speak to an audience daily for living seemed the right fit. 

    Your LL.M. studies at the prestigious University of Michigan Law School must have been a transformative experience. How did those studies influence your practice, particularly in the fields of competition law, constitutional law, and criminal justice? Were there any specific courses or professors whose impact on your legal career has been particularly significant?

    My LLM program at the University of Michigan Law School was both enriching and perhaps one of the toughest things I’ve done in my life. While I can’t say for sure if the content of the law that I learnt has impacted my career (yet), Michigan Law’s emphasis on teaching you to think like a lawyer definitely has. The professors who taught me the courses were experts at the Socratic method, and each day and each class felt like a very public final exam. Particularly, courses by Prof Don Herzog (Political Corruption), Prof Eve Primus (Criminal Procedure) and Prof Richard Primus (Constitutional Law) were life changing. The professors focused more on making us think of a legal argument from both sides seamlessly and sharpen our legal reasoning abilities.  I also got the opportunity to take up courses outside the law school, and had the privilege to be selected for a leadership program by the Stephen M Ross School of Business. So I also got to learn a lot outside the law in Michigan. 

    Having had the privilege to work with eminent legal figures such as Mr. P.S. Narasimha, the Additional Solicitor General of India, and Justice Dr. S. Muralidhar at the Delhi High Court, what were the key lessons you learned from them? How did these experiences shape your approach to the practice of law, and which habits or skills from these mentors have you integrated into your own professional style?

    After NALSAR, I joined Dr. S. Muralidhar, then Judge of the Delhi High Court, as his law clerk for a year. I believe I started to think seriously about the context of the law – and its nuts and bolts – only after joining his office. More importantly, the biggest lesson I learnt during my time as his clerk was that the profession isn’t about me – it isn’t about how I am perceived in court while arguing, how much fame and fortune I get through being a lawyer, or how many important cases I’ve done, but about who I represent and their lived reality.

    Carrying this understanding of the profession, I next joined the chambers of Mr. PS Narasimha, then the Additional Solicitor General of India, for two years before I left for my LL.M. In those two years, I had the chance to be part of some landmark cases like the challenge to the NJAC and the challenge to criminal defamation laws. Working with Mr. PS Narasimha — now Justice Narasimha — was a fantastic experience, as I learnt how to at once look at the big picture while handling a case and analyse precedent granularly. 

    Perhaps most importantly, working under both of them taught me about the value of giving space to a junior lawyer – space to think, to express himself, and to have the freedom to be wrong.

    You have represented a Member of Parliament before the High Court of Karnataka in a public interest litigation challenging the orders issued under Section 144 CrPC by the Government of Karnataka in Bengaluru. What were the key legal arguments you put forth in the case, and how did you navigate the complexities and high stakes involved in such a significant matter?

    When the client approached us, given the time sensitivities involved, we only had about three or four hours to draft, file, get the matter listed and brief our senior counsel.  But despite the short timelines and the pressure of getting the matter heard on time, a bunch of  counsel who were representing similar petitioners got together and helped us in the process of filing and listing the matter – exemplifying the collaborative nature of litigation in general, and our bar in particular.   

    In terms of the merits of the matter, our petition started off focusing on constructing arguments on the values that the Constitution espouses and the meaning of the right to free speech and the right to protest. However, at the time of briefing and during arguments, our senior counsel decided to take a more practical approach to the matter by arguing on administrative law grounds – specifically, whether the orders were issued in a procedurally proper manner, and with reasons. This taught us the value of knowing when to call on a bench to make value-laden calls on the content of rights like free speech and the right to protest, and when to just focus on more objective standards of what the letter of the law permits and prohibits. This approach eventually helped the petitioners win the case, and made me realise the merit of developing tightly reasoned and irrefutable arguments — far from the type that make headlines.

    After working with a range of esteemed lawyers and law firms, what motivated you to establish your own practice? What were some of the initial challenges you faced in this transition, and how did you overcome them to establish a successful practice?

    Whether I’ve established a successful practice is for time to tell. I suppose I, like most litigating lawyers, always wanted to set up my own practice after working for a few years under someone. And as many litigators will tell you, a big part of being a litigating lawyer is being at the right place and at the right time. Before setting up my own practice, I had the chance to handle some of my own clients while being part of Arista Chambers, run by Promod Nair – now a senior counsel — in 2019. During my time at Arista, I slowly built up a base of clients largely through word of mouth. Then Covid hit and a lot changed. By January 2021, it felt like the time was right to start my own practice.

    The real challenge that I faced – and perhaps continue to face – is more internal than anything that involves the actual practice of the law. I don’t know if this is an experience every other litigator has but, for me, I kept (or keep) changing the goalposts. Initially, when I started off, my concerns were about the number of clients and matters I had; this soon changed, and I started to worry about whether I was earning enough to stay on top of things. Very quickly, I moved on to worrying about the kind of matters I was doing and how much of a role I had in various matters. Rinse, repeat. So, essentially, I found myself stressing about different things relating to a career in litigation. Today, I guess I’ve become a bit better at getting some distance from all this, but I would be lying if I said I’ve completely moved beyond these challenges.

    You’ve represented an AI startup in the past. How do you see the future of AI and technology law evolving, particularly in relation to intellectual property rights, data privacy, and regulatory frameworks? What challenges do you anticipate in balancing innovation with legal protections in this rapidly advancing field?

    This may sound like a cliché, but the biggest challenge, I suppose, will be to see whether the law can keep up with technology that appears to be evolving every few months. We’re already seeing this play out live in the Delhi High Court with ANI taking OpenAI to court for copyright infringement. It’ll be interesting to see how the court applies the current copyright regime to deal with technology that was not even conceived at the time the legislation was enacted. The same goes for data privacy. Machine learning technology is rapidly evolving, and I believe the current consent-based approach to data privacy will be tested. I’m not sure how consent can be practically obtained for every instance of use of data when you consider how Gen-AI repurposes data continuously for new outcomes. We may therefore need to imagine a different, more comprehensive data privacy framework for machine learning – or perhaps a separate regulation policy – which not only accounts for the growth and development of the sector, but also keeps at its centre the individual whom the sector is supposed to ultimately serve.

    With your extensive experience spanning constitutional law, commercial disputes, and more, what aspects of the litigation field continue to inspire and drive you? Looking ahead, what vision do you have for both your own career and the future of your firm and how do you balance your personal life with such a demanding career? 

    Three aspects mainly – firstly, I absolutely love the theatre of it all. I like thinking about the delivery of the argument, what style works before which judge, what the judge is thinking at any given point, how to craft the argument before the delivery, and finally the actual delivery of the argument. Secondly, no two days in litigation are the same. One day we are fighting a contentious shareholder dispute; the next day we are going up against the state to protect a farmer’s rights. I’m not sure there are very many professions that enable such diversity in work. Thirdly, every once in a while, you get to represent someone who has been left out by the system. 

    My interest in litigation naturally extends to wanting to nurture those who will shape its future (something I’ve gained immensely from thanks to my previous bosses). At Sadananda & Prasad, we’ve been trying to make it a sort of incubation chamber for future lawyers and a safe space to develop as a lawyer. I believe every good litigator eventually has the dream of starting off on their own, and we hope to create a space where lawyers can come, learn, and start to grow their own practice while not being afraid to fail. That is our vision, and we hope in time this vision is realised.

    Of course, dedication to this vision, and to the profession as a whole, is demanding. That naturally leads to the question of personal balance. I used to try to unwind by either playing a sport or noodling on the guitar or piano. Now I have a 16-month-old, and I spend a significant chunk of my time pretending to be a monkey for her sake. Truth be told, personally, nothing is more stress-relieving.

    What advice would you give to law students aspiring to build a career like yours? What key skills or qualities do you believe are essential for success in these fields? Your journey serves as an inspiration for many, and any advice from you would be invaluable to aspiring legal professionals.

    The role of luck is frankly quite underrated. You may be the best legal mind in the room but still not get the opportunities to showcase it merely because it just isn’t your time. I’ve seen far better lawyers than me give up on litigation simply because of this. So my advice to aspiring litigators would be to just wait for it and don’t give up. Be patient and equanimous. Everyone’s time comes in litigation. In the meantime, be prepared for that moment. Observe and learn from your seniors and peers; know the law – the letter of the law, its logic, and finally its actual practice, so that when your chance comes – which it will – you’re ready to take it. And as my ex-boss often insisted, remember, it’s not about you.

    The field of law is intellectually stimulating but undoubtedly comes with its own set of challenges. What initially inspired you to pursue a career in law, and what continues to drive your passion for this profession?

    During my school days, even though I was a backbencher, I was deeply committed to my studies and consistently ranked among the top five students. In 12th grade, my sole focus was to score well in the board exams. At that stage, I didn’t have the right exposure or mentorship to guide me through structured career entrances like CLAT, so I missed that opportunity. But in hindsight, I believe everything unfolded as it was meant to.

    My journey into law began soon after, and it felt like a natural progression. What initially inspired me was the intellectual challenge the field presents—law requires critical thinking, structured reasoning, and a constant engagement with real-world issues. I was drawn to its power to bring order, resolve disputes, and protect rights.

    What keeps me passionate today is how dynamic and impactful the profession is. No two matters are ever the same. Whether I’m drafting arguments, interpreting statutes, or strategizing for a client, there’s always something new to learn and contribute. The sense of purpose that comes from knowing my work can help individuals, shape policies, or uphold justice is incredibly fulfilling. Law constantly challenges me to grow, not just as a professional but as a person. That’s what keeps me inspired every single day.

    After completing your law degree, what motivated you to pursue a Master’s in Corporate and Business Law from Gujarat National Law University? Why did you choose this particular specialization and institution?

    Before pursuing my Master’s, my journey as a first-generation lawyer was rooted in curiosity and a hunger to learn through experience. With no mentors in the field, I gravitated naturally toward litigation. My first internship was under Hon’ble Mr. Justice Aniruddha P. Mayee, who was then an Advocate-on-Record at the Supreme Court and is now a sitting judge of the Gujarat High Court. Observing his sharp advocacy and structured thinking left a lasting impression on me. It was there I discovered the energy and depth of courtroom practice, and I knew litigation was my path.

    Being a hands-on learner, I expressed a desire to continue training under him. He encouraged me to first build a strong foundation at the trial court level, and referred me to a boutique litigation firm in Jangpura. For nearly three years, I balanced my law school schedule with intensive training at the firm, gaining invaluable exposure to real-world practice.

    Later, I decided to pursue a Master’s in Corporate and Business Law from Gujarat National Law University. Having missed the NLU experience earlier, I was determined to learn in that ecosystem. GNLU’s academic rigor and national stature gave me the perfect platform to complement my practical litigation background with a solid corporate legal framework.

    In the early stages of your legal career, what were some formative experiences that deepened your understanding of the law? How significant do you believe was the role of mentors or seniors during this phase?

    In the early stages of my legal career, what truly deepened my understanding of the law was being exposed to its ground-level application. Working closely at the trial court level, I learned that law is not just about theory or interpretation; it is about people, timing, and precision. I saw firsthand how a strong cross-examination or a well-crafted written submission could influence the outcome of a case. This practical immersion gave me a sense of how justice is pursued step by step.

    One particularly formative experience was learning to draft under tight deadlines in live matters. I understood the value of clarity, accuracy, and urgency. No classroom could have replicated that intensity.

    Mentors played a critical role during this time. Their guidance was not limited to legal advice; they taught me how to carry myself in court, how to listen, when to push, and when to hold back. Their trust in giving me real responsibilities early on helped build my confidence. Being corrected in real time and then being encouraged to do better was more valuable than any textbook. These early lessons laid the foundation not just for my knowledge of law but for how I practice and perceive it to this day.

    You have represented constitutional writ petitions involving sensitive issues, such as the rights of transgender and sexual minority prisoners. What inspired you to take on such complex matters? How do you approach the legal, ethical, and emotional dimensions of cases that receive widespread media attention?

    Yes, I’ve always been deeply driven by causes rooted in social justice and constitutional values. My journey into such complex and sensitive matters began in 2020, when I filed a PIL in my own name before the Delhi High Court, seeking protection of attorney-client privilege in virtual communications during the COVID-19 pandemic. The court issued directions to the Bar Council of India, following which the BCI requested the government to specify secure apps for confidential communications. That experience showed me how a focused legal intervention can protect fundamental rights, even in emerging digital contexts.

    Shortly after, I was approached by a legal correspondent who brought to my attention a disturbing gap, the complete absence of data regarding transgender in the NCRB’s prison statistics. This struck a chord with me. I filed another PIL arguing that in a system where transgender persons are neither acknowledged on paper nor provided with basic facilities in jails, their dignity and identity are systematically denied. I sought urgent judicial intervention to include “third gender” as a separate category in national prison statistics.

    The Hon’ble Court took serious note, and the Union Government committed to including transgender persons in future jail data reporting.

    Cases like these require more than legal knowledge, they demand empathy, courage, and a strong ethical compass. I approach such matters with humility and responsibility, knowing that they affect real lives and attract public scrutiny. My role is not only to argue persuasively but to uphold the dignity of those whose voices often go unheard. Media attention never distracts me, it reminds me of the greater duty I carry as a lawyer committed to constitutional values and human dignity.

    After working with various Advocates-on-Record and Senior Advocates, what led you to establish your own independent practice? What were some of the initial hurdles you encountered, and how did you navigate those challenges?

    I was fortunate to work under some of the finest legal minds in the profession, who not only sharpened my understanding of the law but also instilled in me the discipline, ethics, and confidence essential for courtroom practice. The exposure I received, whether through detailed research, complex drafting, or closely observing strategic litigation, made me realize the kind of advocate I aspired to become.

    Eventually, I felt the urge to take ownership of my own matters and arguments. I believed that building an independent practice would allow me to grow beyond execution and step into strategic thinking, decision-making, and direct client advocacy. It was not an easy transition.

    One of the biggest hurdles was earning the trust of clients without the backing of a senior’s name. I had to prove my capability in every brief and every appearance. There were also financial uncertainties and administrative pressures that come with running your own practice. But I overcame them through consistency, networking, and staying deeply committed to every matter I took up, big or small.

    The challenges were many, but the sense of professional growth and personal fulfillment that comes with independence has made the journey deeply rewarding.

    As an AOR you represent both private and government clients, particularly in matters under the Electricity Act. What are some recurring legal or procedural challenges you face in this domain?

    As destiny would have it, my exposure to electricity and regulatory law began early in my career at one of the offices I worked in, where I had the opportunity to assist on matters for a panel representing electricity distribution companies before the Delhi High Court. That experience sparked a genuine interest in the regulatory framework under the Electricity Act. I gradually took on more responsibilities, working closely on drafting, strategy, and regulatory filings. Recognizing my growing familiarity and aptitude for the subject, the panel encouraged me to formally associate and handle matters independently. That marked the beginning of my journey in this specialized field.

    Electricity law is a unique blend of legal, technical, and regulatory dimensions. One recurring challenge is navigating the procedural overlaps between forums such as the State Commissions, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, and Appellate Tribunal. Each has its own timelines, jurisdictional nuances, and compliance obligations. Another frequent hurdle is the technical complexity of issues, including tariff computations, grid code compliance, and power purchase agreements, which often require a detailed understanding of engineering and finance concepts.

    To overcome this, I make it a point to engage regularly with technical experts and stay updated on evolving regulatory guidelines and judicial precedents. Whether I represent government utilities or private players, I approach each matter by balancing legal strategy with technical clarity. This intersectional understanding is what helps deliver real value to clients in this challenging yet intellectually rewarding area of law.

    What has been one of the most challenging cases you’ve handled so far? Could you share insights into how you prepared for it and managed its complexities?

    There have been several challenging cases in my journey, and each one, whether a high-stakes regulatory dispute or a sensitive constitutional matter, has tested my legal acumen in different ways. What I’ve learned is that no case is “simple” once you delve into its details. Every matter demands thorough preparation, a clear strategy, and a deep understanding of both law and facts.

    I approach complex cases by breaking them down systematically, starting with exhaustive legal research, understanding procedural nuances, and aligning the facts with the most persuasive legal framework. Often, the real challenge lies in navigating unpredictability, whether it is evolving judicial trends, stakeholder expectations, or tight timelines.

    Support from peers and mentors, along with constant self-discipline, has been critical. I believe the ability to remain calm under pressure, think logically, and communicate clearly both inside and outside court is what ultimately helps turn legal complexities into opportunities for impactful advocacy.

    What advice would you offer to young lawyers starting their careers? Are there specific habits, mindsets, or resources that played a key role in shaping your professional journey?

    My advice to young lawyers, especially those stepping into litigation, is to embrace patience and perseverance. This profession doesn’t offer immediate rewards but it promises lasting growth for those who are committed. In the early years, it’s easy to feel disheartened when you see peers in other fields earning more or progressing faster. But law, particularly litigation, is a long game. The knowledge, credibility, and client trust you build over time compound into something far more meaningful than just a paycheck.

    One habit that shaped my journey was showing up consistently, even when the work felt repetitive or unrewarded. Staying curious, reading beyond case files, and learning from seniors helped me sharpen both my understanding of the law and the courtroom. I also found it crucial to remain humble. This field rewards those who are open to learning every day.

    Litigation tests your character before it builds your career. But if you remain focused, disciplined, and honest in your work, the profession will eventually give you more than you imagined. There’s no shortcut, only the steady climb. And that’s what makes every milestone worth it.

    Being an AOR and balancing a demanding legal practice with personal life can be challenging. How do you manage your professional responsibilities while also making time for yourself? What do you do to unwind and stay focused?

    Balancing a demanding legal practice as an Advocate-on-Record with personal life certainly has its challenges, but I’ve come to believe that balance isn’t about doing everything; it’s about doing what truly matters with focus and intention. I’ve learned to manage my schedule by prioritizing what needs my attention most and creating small pockets of time for myself, no matter how busy the day is.

    To unwind, I rely on simple but grounding routines: spending time with loved ones, going for long walks, and staying physically active. I also make it a point to disconnect from screens and step away from work conversations when I’m off duty. That break, however brief, allows me to return to work sharper and more focused.

    For me, it’s not about achieving a perfect work-life balance every day, but about being present in whatever I’m doing, whether I’m in court or at the dinner table. That mindset keeps me centered. Over time, I’ve realized that sustaining a successful legal career isn’t just about how hard you work; it’s also about how well you care for your own well-being along the way.

    Additionally, Senior Advocate Mr Abhimanyu Bhandari has been a role model for me, and I greatly admire his exceptional legal acumen and courtroom presence.     During the early stages of my career, I was privileged to work with some of the most esteemed legal professionals, and these experiences played a pivotal role in refining my understanding of specialised areas such as Intellectual Property and Insolvency & Bankruptcy.

    My interest in Intellectual Property law was sparked during my time at the chamber of Mr Salman Khurshid, where I had the distinct opportunity to work on a personal legal matter of his. This exposure provided me with invaluable insights into the intricate nature of IPR disputes and their strategic nuances. I was particularly fortunate to have the guidance of his associates, including Mr Aadil Singh Boparai, former Additional Advocate General of the State of Punjab, who ensured that I remained actively engaged in complex IPR matters. Their mentorship deepened my appreciation for the field and solidified my interest in intellectual property rights.

    Similarly, my passion for Insolvency & Bankruptcy law developed during my tenure at IVY Law Offices. It was there that I had the privilege of briefing and observing stalwarts such as Mr Abhimanyu Bhandari and Mr Sumant Batra on IBC matters concerning prominent real estate giants. This first-hand exposure to high-stakes insolvency proceedings not only enhanced my technical knowledge but also sharpened my strategic thinking and advocacy skills in this domain.

    These formative years were instrumental in shaping my legal acumen, allowing me to develop a structured, analytical approach to handling complex cases.     From the very outset of my legal career, I harboured a strong desire to work for myself, but I was conscious that before taking such a step, I needed to gain a thorough understanding of the law in specific areas. My time with esteemed law firms provided me with invaluable exposure, but I always knew that establishing my own independent practice would allow me to shape my professional journey in a way that aligned with my aspirations.

    One of my foremost motivations for starting my own practice was my ambition to establish myself as an arguing counsel. I believed that stepping into independent practice was the ideal way to hone my advocacy skills and take on more significant litigation roles. Throughout this journey, I have been fortunate to have the unwavering support of my seniors, including Mr Aaditya Shankar Prasad, and my loved ones, who have always encouraged me during challenging times.

    Of course, the decision to leave a well-salaried job to venture into independent practice was not an easy one. The financial uncertainty that comes with such a transition is daunting, but I was fortunate to have a few clients from my very first job, which provided me with a foundation to build upon. Instead of being deterred by the challenges, I remained focused on specific areas of law—particularly Insolvency & Bankruptcy and Real Estate disputes—that would allow me to generate work and grow my practice strategically.

    My vision has always been clear—to establish myself as one of the finest litigation lawyers in the fields of IBC and Real Estate disputes. I am committed to continuous learning, refining my advocacy, and making a meaningful contribution to these specialised areas of law. The journey so far has been demanding yet deeply fulfilling, and I look forward to further strengthening my expertise and reputation in the years to come.

    Your extensive expertise in Insolvency and Bankruptcy (IBC), particularly in cases involving companies such as Earthcon Universal Infratech and Unity Group, UNIBERA CIRP,  and other CIRP cases have been widely recognized. From your experience, what are the most common challenges that businesses and creditors face in these proceedings? How do you adapt your approach to each unique case to ensure the best possible outcome for your clients?

    My experience in handling Corporate Insolvency Resolution Processes (CIRP) for companies such as Earthcon Universal Infratech, Unity Group, UNIBERA CIRP, and several other real estate insolvency cases has provided me with deep insights into the challenges faced by various stakeholders, particularly creditors.

    In real estate insolvencies, homebuyers and operational creditors often emerge as the primary victims of the litigation process. The insolvency framework, both legislatively and judicially, has traditionally prioritised financial creditors, leaving operational creditors in a precarious position. One of the most pressing challenges they face is their exclusion from the Committee of Creditors (CoC), which consists predominantly of financial creditors. This exclusion severely limits their ability to influence resolution plans, often resulting in minimal or, at times, no recoveries at all. The disparity in treatment has led to persistent concerns regarding the fairness of the insolvency resolution process and calls for reforms to ensure a more equitable distribution of assets among all stakeholders.

    Each case presents its own set of complexities, and my approach is always tailored to achieve the best possible outcome for my clients. For operational creditors, the key lies in strategically asserting their rights within the existing legal framework while pushing for a more balanced interpretation of insolvency laws. This often involves challenging unfair treatment before tribunals and courts to ensure that their interests are not completely disregarded. For homebuyers, the focus remains on maximising recoveries through structured legal strategies and advocating for resolutions that safeguard their investments.

    Navigating insolvency proceedings requires a combination of legal expertise, strategic foresight, and a deep understanding of financial intricacies. My goal is always to bridge the gap between legal provisions and practical realities, ensuring that my clients—whether operational creditors, homebuyers, or other stakeholders—receive the strongest possible representation to protect their interests in an otherwise complex and often unfavourable system.

    You have handled several high-profile money laundering cases before the PMLA. Could you share the most challenging white-collar crime case you’ve dealt with and how you navigated the intricate legal challenges involved? What strategies did you employ to ensure a successful defense?

    As a legal practitioner handling complex white-collar crime cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), confidentiality and discretion are paramount. While I cannot disclose specific details due to the sensitive nature of these matters, I can broadly share that I have worked on several high-profile cases, including a widely publicised airline scam, two major bank fraud cases, real estate-related laundering matters, and a case involving a prominent political figure who was a former Chief Minister of a state.

    Each of these cases presented unique challenges, particularly due to the interplay of multiple statutes, cross-border transactions, voluminous financial records, and the rigorous scrutiny of enforcement agencies. Navigating such intricate legal complexities required not only a deep understanding of PMLA but also a strategic, multi-faceted defence approach.

    Under the guidance of my esteemed seniors, I gained invaluable experience in tackling these high-stakes matters. The key to an effective defence in PMLA cases often lies in meticulously dissecting financial trails, challenging procedural lapses, and ensuring that the fundamental rights of the accused are upheld throughout the proceedings. A proactive approach—combining thorough legal research, forensic financial analysis, and strategic litigation—was instrumental in mounting a strong defence.

    Beyond the legal technicalities, these cases reinforced the importance of adaptability and precision in white-collar crime litigation. Each matter provided a profound learning experience, further honing my expertise in handling intricate financial crime cases and reinforcing my commitment to delivering the highest standard of legal representation in this challenging domain.

    As a legal advisor to CREDAI and with your extensive experience in real estate advisory, what do you consider to be the most pressing legal challenges facing the real estate sector in India today? How do you foresee the sector evolving, especially in terms of legal reforms and challenges in the coming years?

    As a legal advisor to CREDAI and someone who has been deeply involved in real estate advisory and litigation, I have witnessed first-hand the evolving legal landscape of the sector. From the outset of my legal career, I was drawn to real estate law, and my expertise in this domain led to independent advisory roles for several prominent developers. Today, I have the privilege of advising over a dozen builders, guiding them through the intricate legal framework that governs this critical industry.

    The real estate sector in India faces a myriad of legal challenges, many of which stem from regulatory uncertainties, compliance burdens, and financial complexities. One of the most pressing issues is the interplay between multiple laws—such as the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA), the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, the SARFAESI Act, the Negotiable Instruments Act, and various criminal laws—each of which plays a significant role in real estate disputes. Developers often find themselves entangled in prolonged litigation, particularly in insolvency matters, while homebuyers and other stakeholders struggle with delays in project delivery. Ensuring a balanced approach that protects consumer rights while providing a viable legal framework for developers remains a crucial challenge.

    In my role as an advisor to CREDAI, I have handled high-stakes cases worth billions of rupees, appearing before the Hon’ble High Court and the Supreme Court of India. These experiences have reinforced my belief that the real estate sector holds immense potential for growth, provided that both developers and policymakers work in tandem to create a more transparent and efficient regulatory environment. The government must take proactive steps to streamline approval processes, enhance dispute resolution mechanisms, and promote investment-friendly policies. At the same time, developers must ensure strict compliance with legal frameworks to build credibility and sustain long-term growth.

    Looking ahead, I foresee significant legal reforms aimed at strengthening investor confidence and addressing the structural bottlenecks that often hinder real estate development. Countries like the UAE, particularly Dubai, have demonstrated how robust legal frameworks and government support can drive infrastructure growth and urban development. India must follow a similar trajectory by fostering a legal environment that encourages both domestic and foreign investments while ensuring fair treatment of all stakeholders.

    For young lawyers, the real estate sector presents a strong foundation in the early years of practice. Given its interdisciplinary nature, I strongly recommend mastering key legal areas such as IBC, RERA, arbitration, SARFAESI, the NI Act, and criminal law, all of which are extensively utilised in real estate litigation. The sector is not only financially rewarding but also offers immense opportunities for those willing to navigate its complexities with diligence and expertise.

    With your extensive and diverse experience in the legal field, what advice would you offer to young professionals who aspire to build a successful career in commercial litigation and high-stakes legal matters? What skills or mindset do you believe are crucial for excelling in these challenging areas of law?

    For young professionals aspiring to establish a career in commercial litigation and high-stakes legal matters, my foremost advice would be to develop a strong foundation in key legal areas and cultivate the appropriate mindset to navigate the complexities of this profession. Building meaningful professional relationships, working diligently during law school, and dedicating oneself to internships are essential elements in laying the groundwork for a successful legal career. Engaging in continuous internships, contributing to legal scholarship through writing, and staying updated with the latest judicial developments are indispensable practices for any law student. These endeavours not only refine legal skills but also provide a competitive edge in an ever-evolving field.

    To young lawyers, including those at the early stages of their careers, I would offer similar guidance—work with diligence and identify an environment where your skills and aspirations align. Understanding one’s own strengths and capabilities is crucial, as is recognising when and where to apply them effectively. Strategic application of one’s abilities at the right stage can make a significant difference in professional growth and success.

    For those entering this field, I strongly recommend gaining proficiency in statutes that frequently intersect with commercial disputes, such as the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA), the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, the SARFAESI Act, the Negotiable Instruments Act, and relevant provisions of criminal law. A thorough command of these statutes not only enhances legal acumen but also equips aspiring litigators with the requisite tools to handle complex financial and contractual disputes with confidence and precision.

    Furthermore, it is imperative to acknowledge that, in the legal profession, financial success should not be the primary objective. Instead, establishing a strong reputation through dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the practice of law is of paramount importance.     Balancing professional responsibilities with personal well-being is indeed a challenge in the legal profession, given its demanding nature. However, I firmly believe that a good lawyer must not only excel in their practice but also take care of every aspect of life to ensure long-term success and fulfilment.

    For me, achieving this balance starts with mindful time management and setting clear priorities. While my professional commitments require unwavering dedication, I make a conscious effort to nurture my personal life as well. Travelling is something I truly enjoy, as it allows me to disconnect from the routine, gain new perspectives, and return with renewed energy. Spending quality time with my parents and staying in touch with loved ones are also essential aspects of my life, as they provide emotional support and grounding amidst a busy schedule.

    Additionally, I have always been eager to meet new people and engage in social interactions, as I believe that meaningful conversations and diverse perspectives contribute immensely to both personal and professional growth.     With nearly a decade of experience in law, what first inspired you to pursue this profession? Was it a conscious decision from the start, or did it naturally evolve over time?

    Law did not seem a natural choice for me initially. I pursued science post 10th Boards and was leaning towards a career in engineering. However, within a few months into the 11th standard, I realised I was not made for a career in science. Also, I always wanted to do something different. While I was exploring a few options, based on what was my worldview at that age, one of my close family friends chose law and that is when I tried to imagine if that is something I would enjoy. By 12th standard I knew, law was the way to go. It stunned a lot of people in a small town where engineering and medicine seemed like the only options for science students. But I had made up my mind and haven’t looked back since. 

    After completing your law degree, you went on to pursue an LL.M. in International Banking and Finance Law from University College London. What motivated you to choose this particular university, and how has your academic journey there contributed to your success in your career? Could you also share some experiences or challenges you faced during the admission process or while studying at UCL?

    Initially I had not even imagined that pursuing an LLM abroad would be one of the options I had. But my father encouraged me to seriously consider it. I was clear that I eventually wanted to pursue Litigation and Arbitration back in India. 

    Since the UK is the home to common law and a lot of Indian law has evolved from the British era, choosing to pursue my LLM in the UK became a natural choice. 

    I researched online and had discussions with a few people who had already pursued their education abroad. The general consensus was that I should look for the professor under whose guidance I would want to write my thesis rather than only selecting a college / university. At that time my interest was in International Law of Foreign Investment and Treaty arbitration. Which is why I wanted to pursue my Master’s under Dr. Martins Paparinskis whose profile was something I was drawn to. He taught both these subjects at University College London in 2015-16. 

    The experience at UCL was exhilarating. Their style of teaching taught me the discipline of self study even before the lecture begins. We had the entire curriculum for the semester in our hands even before the introductory lecture. The focus was on discussions on the topics we were already supposed to have read up on and only to clear doubts based on the preliminary reading. Of the 4 subjects I had chosen, we only had only one lecture of two hours per subject in a week, giving us ample time to read before and after the lecture. This encouraged us to think independently which was the biggest takeaway from the course. 

    One of the most important courses I took up at UCL was the Academic English Writing Course. It was open to all and was a course which would help us write our thesis. This course has had immense long term impact on my career, as it was the seed which led to my academic writing bug later on and also for establishing the Arbitration Workshop Blog. 

    Honestly, the admission process was very streamlined. But I would be remiss in saying that I did everything on my own, I was given guidance by an education consultancy service in India. They were very clear that they would only guide me through the process while I focussed on preparing my essay for the selection process. They encouraged me to dig deep and write the essay based on my life and why I was the best candidate to secure a place in the master’s programme at UCL. The actual course work at UCL was enjoyable. Since we were non-europeans, we were also given the first preference in the hostel accommodations run by the University. To some extent the only challenge I faced was preparing my own meals as I chose an accommodation which did not have a mess but had kitchens on individual floors spread between 5 flatmates. But even that became enjoyable over the course of time.  

    Following your master’s, you worked as a legal assistant to Justice A.K. Patnaik (Retd.), Former Judge of the Supreme Court of India. What were your early experiences like in that role, and how did they shape your understanding of the law? Are there any values or insights from that time that you still carry with you today?

    It was the greatest introduction I could have had in the legal profession. I was the first legal assistant he had hired since his retirement from the Supreme Court and since his foray into arbitration. The one-to-one mentorship with him was a great learning experience. I got introduced to the practical aspects of contract law during my tenure with him and that has shaped my expertise. The practice of arbitration is associated more with contract Law rather than arbitration law and the fundamental aspects of contract law that I learnt on the job helped me immensely in my academic writing. 

    He had a terrific library on domestic and international contract law which broadened my horizons. I got into the habit of reading those books during my free time. One of the most important lessons he taught me was don’t rush after judgments. Read the statute first and try applying the law to the facts before moving on to judgments which explain the grey areas of law.

    When drafting arbitration awards for construction contracts, particularly regarding issues like delays in land handover, scope changes, and termination payments, what were some of the key legal challenges you faced?

    The key issues with constructions contracts were liquidated damages clauses which capped the damages for losses that occurred due to breaches on the part of the employer, such as delay in handover of land / right of away. It created a conundrum where an employer who had hopelessly delayed in handing over of the land or was in breach of an obligation under the contract, was still not liable for the damages to the extent sought by the Contractor, as there was either an exclusion clause or a liquidated damages clause. This is an interplay between Section 73, 74 and 55 of the Contract Act read with Section 23 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, wherein the terms of the contract, however absurd, governed the jurisdiction of the arbitral tribunal. 

    As far as change of scope of work is concerned, the disagreement stemmed from whether something amounted to change of scope of work or was it within the original scope of work. I can recall a case wherein the contractor had intimated to the employer that as part of the original objective of constructing the road, there was certain additional work that was required to be done such as shifting of certain pipelines which were not contemplated within the original scope of work. The contractor sought for the approval, however, never received the same. But as the same was necessary to move forward with the construction, they carried out the additional work and raised invoices towards it later. The Employer however rejected the invoices as they had not been approved. In such a scenario, arbitral tribunal had to rely on principles of contract law to hold that the Employer had by its conduct approved the changes, as it never objected to the same contemporaneously, and accordingly the contractor was granted the claim towards the additional work done as part of the construction.  

    Termination payment also is a complex issue. Concession agreements provide termination payment to be made to the contractor in the event of a termination of the contract, either rightful or wrongful, the quantum however being different. Such termination payment clauses are unique to concession agreements as in the DBFOT model, the concessionaire is not just responsible for the construction but also the financing among other things. In cases of termination payment, therefore, the issue of liability becomes very highly contested. Also, the quantification of termination payment used to be very complex and used to have certain grey areas, which made the calculation itself difficult. In cases where the parties spent maximum amount of time on the liability, if the issue of quantification was left unresolved, it became a challenge for the arbitral tribunal to understand the calculation methodology under the contract. This could lead to disagreement over the calculation itself and was particularly challenging on a few occasions while drafting the arbitral award in the office of Justice A.K. Patnaik.

    Can you share some of the most difficult aspects of representing public sector insurance companies in arbitration or before the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission?

    While dealing with any public sector undertaking, the most crucial aspect is documentation. If contemporaneous documents are available clearly pointing out the issues / approvals etc during the project being carried out, it becomes easy to represent PSU’s. However the lack of documentation / decision making during the project approval / execution stage makes it difficult to successfully represent the PSU. Further, cases of Insurance come within the scope of Consumer Forums which are summary in nature and hence it becomes difficult to protect the interest of the Insurance Companies since the fora generally are established to protect the interests of the consumer. Insurance law is very technical and certain principles of law, such as, uberrima fides or utmost good faith are only applicable to insurance law. A perusal of various judgments and orders from the District and State fora indicate they do not truly apply these special provisions of law relating to Insurance Contracts and therefore the matter has to unfortunately be appealed to the National Commission. Even at the National Commission and Supreme Court level there is a dearth of the judgments which explain in detail the the unique principles of insurance law which should be applicable to various issues which the district and state fora can utilise and apply. This is one of the greatest challenge of defending a PSU Insurance company or any insurance company for that matter. 

    Having worked on complex arbitral awards and challenges involving patent illegality and public policy, how do you craft compelling arguments when challenging such awards, particularly when dealing with contract violations or lack of sufficient evidence?

    The challenge of arbitral awards is very tricky as the scope is extremely limited. Patent Illegality, as the term itself suggests, stipulates that the award should be illegal on the face of it and should not be just an alternate interpretation of the award. When challenging an arbitral award, the argument which is most convincing is, when the arbitral tribunal has gone beyond the contours of the contract or the law and given a conclusion so absurd that it falls foul of the reasonable man standard. It is rare to get a clear contract violation on the part of the tribunal and if there is such a case, the same falls squarely within the scope of the provisions of arbitration law for setting aside the award. 

    In some cases when the tribunal grants a particular award on the basis of equity the same becomes a valid ground to challenge the award when the parties have not permitted the tribunal to do so. In such cases it is best to stick to the point and not beat around the bush about each aspect of the award in an attempt to try all possible challenges and hoping one will stick. The more precise the argument and draft, the easier it is to convince a court of the patently illegal nature of the award. 

    The arbitral tribunal is considered the master of the evidence, and they have the power to decide the admissibility, relevancy, materiality and weight. Insufficiency of evidence therefore is not a ground for setting aside an award. This is because if there is some evidence, the tribunals are allowed to extrapolate and do intelligent guesswork basis the documents available for the merits of the claim and the quantification of the claims. It is only in cases where there is no evidence that an award made by the tribunal can be set aside. Although the Evidence Act (now the (Bhartiya Sakshya Sanhita) is not applicable to arbitration, the well known principles continue to apply. Hence when the tribunal applies some of these principles incorrectly, it gives an additional yet narrow window of opportunity to the judgment debtor to challenge the award. The crafting of the arguments in this regard therefore are on the lines that the principles of evidence which should have been applicable, have either not been applied or have been applied incorrectly. 

    The above are broadly the methods one can follow to challenge an award on the ground of violation of the contract or lack of evidence.   

    Looking back at your career, what project or initiative has been the most rewarding for you? What made it particularly significant, both professionally and personally?

    The Arbitration Workshop Blog, hands down, has to be the most rewarding project of mine. The initial idea and what it has turned into is surreal for both me and Gautam (my co-founder). The positive reviews I have received from people and the recognition it has given me in the legal circles warms my heart every time. We started the blog before the pandemic and consistently delivered through thought provoking deep dive articles, which is why I believe we have received continued patronage from our readers. It has also become a research tool as many of our hits are straight from google search. I hope we are able to carry on the same way and build it into something bigger, while remaining true to our core principles of creating a more informed arbitration bar and to always deep dive on an issue and discuss the entire jurisprudence, to make it a one stop shop for academic and practitioners alike.

    Given the demanding nature of your career, how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? Also, how do you ensure your well-being safeguarding your personal health and happiness?

    Honestly it has been tough to maintain a work life balance. To put it bluntly, personal health does take a toll. In which case it is important to find ways to find your happiness and make sure you put efforts towards it whether it comes from work itself or from your side project. Also, finding 15 mins to 30 mins a day is only possible if you take a definitive stance that working out or eating right is most important to putting in long hours in this profession. I prefer playing table tennis in the evenings and working out in the morning at my home, so that it gives me the mental toughness of working through the day. Funnily enough, physical activity makes me more energetic. 

    Everyone needs to find their career, fitness and mental health goals and then balance it out. Because one size does not fit all. Most importantly balance does not mean that your day should be balanced. It could also be that you may have 3 hectic days. It is then important to take light on the 4th day and have the regular balanced days thereafter. The above scenario should not be considered as break in the routine, but rather a vehicle moving full speed ahead, which has gone a little off track, post which you take control and steer it back to the centre. 

    What advice would you give to aspiring lawyers who want to make an impact across diverse areas of law, as you have? Are there any resources or strategies you would recommend for staying up-to-date in the constantly evolving legal field?

    My go to practice is reading judgments straight from High Court websites. I track the roster which is currently deciding the matters which are of interest to me and accordingly, read judgments written by them. I start from the bottom so that I know what the court has decided and thereafter read from the top if it is of some interest to me. This has kept me in good stead over the years as I have maintained a digital notebook of these judgments and thereafter used it as a personal repository to research whenever I am faced with an issue of contract law or arbitration. The judgments also give me ideas to write something on a grey area of law which fuelled my writing career. There is no substitute to reading the original judgment, as articles generally are an interpretation of the judgment by the author of the article. The above practice also helps in increasing the speed of reading judgments and to give us a certain comfort while reading judgments. I am sure this practice will help any young professional aiming to improve their professional standing.

    With nearly a decade of experience, could you share what shaped your decision to pursue a legal career? Was law always your intended path, or did your interest develop over time?

    Growing up in different parts of the country, I witnessed diverse cultures and educational experiences. During all these changes, the only thing that remained constant was my love for reading, debating and playing sports. After doing extensive research into various avenues which are better suited to my interests, I realised that law is my calling. Although I am a first-generation lawyer, rigorous participation in moot court, extempore debate and client counselling competitions gave me the motivation and confidence to pursue litigation. My interest in litigation shaped my vision to join a chamber, start my independent practice and ultimately establish a law firm.  

    You began your legal career at the chambers of Senior Advocate B. M. Chatterji in Mumbai. What were some of the key lessons you learned during this time and how did it help form the foundation of your legal practice?

    It is difficult to sum in limited words about the profuse lessons I have learnt from Chatterji sir. Under his tutelage, I learnt the importance of meticulously reviewing documents, to give attention to details, learning to juggle multiple tasks and manage time to handle the demands of legal practice especially when managing a large caseload, the real-world impact of legal decisions, the importance of clear, empathetic communication before the Court, how to approach and conclude complex legal research. He set the foundation of my legal practice and despite going independent, I continue to learn from him and for that I will forever be grateful to him, as once a senior, always a senior.

    After gaining significant experience, you founded Bridgehead Law Partners. What inspired you to take the leap and establish your own firm, and what challenges did you face while building your practice from the ground up?

    Bombay is the financial hub of India with a plethora of commercial and financial transactions and disputes. My focus area has always been commercial dispute litigation and my Partner Karan Narvekar’s focus area has always been corporate advisory. We teamed up and established Bridgehead Law Partners with the passion and vision to build something from scratch, make a bigger impact, provide a one stop solution to all legal disputes and to take on complex legal matters. Despite multiple challenges, seeing the firm grow from an idea to something that truly makes a difference in the lives of clients and litigants has made this struggle worthwhile. One of the biggest challenges I faced in building my practice was the initial uncertainty, financial risk and pressure to make decisions that would affect not just me, but those who joined me in this journey because team building is one of the key ingredients for ensuring longevity of any institution. 

    Could you give us an insight into your practice areas? Do you take up a lot of matters before the National Company Law Tribunal and National Company Law Appellate Tribunal?

    My practice revolves around various kinds of commercial disputes arising under contracts, domestic and international arbitration, direct and indirect taxation laws, succession matters, admiralty law, insolvency and bankruptcy law specially relating to creditors, resolution professionals, successful resolution applicants and personal insolvency across the country. I also represent clients before the Securities Appellate Tribunal in matters pertaining to securities law disputes. Securities Appellate Tribunal is a special forum with only one bench in Mumbai that hears appeals against decisions made by the Securities and Exchange Board of India, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority or the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority. 

    Practice in National Company Law Tribunal and National Company Law Appellate Tribunal is not just about insolvency matters. It also deals with multiple disputes arising under the company law and one of the most common disputes is act of oppression and mismanagement of shareholders in a family-owned business. Indian insolvency law is still evolving and NCLT is already overburdened with the pressure of time bound disposal of insolvency matters, however, constitution of bench with members from legal background as well as practical and technical areas have led to closure of corporate insolvency resolution process of various companies, restored faith of investors and framed the landscape of insolvency laws in this country.

    Given your experience in both Indian and international arbitration, how do you manage the complexities of cross-border legal matters? What specific challenges arise when working with foreign clients or navigating international legal systems? 

    Managing the complexities of cross-border legal matters, especially in arbitration, requires a deep understanding of both the substantive legal issues and the procedural nuances that differ from one jurisdiction to another. Each jurisdiction has its own laws, regulations, and procedures for arbitration. In the case of cross-border arbitration, I ensure that I have a clear understanding of the relevant legal framework in both: the country where the arbitration is seated and the countries involved in the dispute. One must also be well versed with the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996, UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, rules of arbitration institution, etc. Managing cross-border arbitration involves a strategic combination of understanding different legal systems, building strong working relationships with local experts, maintaining cultural sensitivity and being adaptable in the face of evolving challenges. 

    What advice would you offer to young law students or aspiring advocates who wish to pursue a career similar to yours? Are there any particular skills, habits, or mindsets they should focus on developing early in their legal careers?

    Early on in my law college, I realised the importance of being updated about legal developments. For me, reading legal articles, judgments and journals was an unavoidable part of my law college journey. It is a habit I continue to follow till date. A successful start to a legal career requires a combination of intellectual rigor, reading, practical experience, internships and personal growth. One advice that I would like to pass on is that law students must participate in moot court competitions to get an insight into the dynamics of presenting a case before a judge, understanding courtroom etiquette building confidence in dealing with the court environment.

    Balancing professional growth with personal life can be challenging. How do you manage to maintain this balance? Are there any specific hobbies or activities you enjoy to unwind and relax after a busy day?

    Just as I schedule meetings and work-related tasks, I also schedule personal time for activities that help me unwind after a long day. Whether it’s spending time with family and friends, exercising, playing sports, reading books or travelling, treating this time as non-negotiable ensures that I don’t overcommit to work and lose out on life outside of the office. I try to be intentional about how I use my time. Regularly stepping back to reflect on my goals, both professional and personal, helps me stay aligned with what I want from life.

    Considering your background and early life experiences, how did those factors shape your understanding of the role of law in society and what made you eventually decide to pursue a career in law? Was there a specific event, experience, or person that influenced your decision to enter the legal profession?

    I was the quintessential mischievous kid—the kind who was always on a teacher’s radar for all the wrong reasons. Academically, I was average, but I had a natural flair for connecting with people and forming relationships. I credit my family for seeing beyond the chaos and recognizing that my energy could be channelled into something meaningful and encouraged me to pursue law.

    Coming from a business family with no legal background, I became a first-generation lawyer—a leap into the unknown. Stepping into the legal profession felt like finding the missing piece of a puzzle. The law, with its vast landscape and limitless opportunities for growth, resonated with me. It wasn’t just a career; it became a calling. Law, with its endless possibilities and avenues for growth, gave me hope that I could use my abilities to carve a small space for myself in this landscape.

    During the initial phase of your career, you handled disputes for major corporate clients. Could you share some of the formative experiences that enhanced your understanding of the law and helped you to enhance your career trajectory?

    I was fortunate enough to have worked with reputed litigation law firms throughout and have a diverse start in my career, experiencing the depths of civil, criminal, and commercial law. However, I sincerely believe that it was not just the big-ticket cases or influential clients that defined my journey—it was the groundwork, the nuts and bolts of practice and procedure, that shaped me.

    I made it a point to immerse myself in the procedural workings of courts and tribunals—not just in Delhi but across other states too. This hands-on exposure is my strength, and has added layers to my understanding of legal practice.

    A standout highlight of my journey has been regularly briefing some of the most prominent senior counsels across India on a variety of disputes. This experience led me to develop a deeper understanding of law, sharpened my skills and gave me the confidence to handle complex challenges with ease.

    One of the greatest blessings in my journey was working under bosses who were absolute masters of their craft. They set the bar high and demanded nothing less than excellence. Their mentorship wasn’t just about honing my legal acumen—it was about instilling discipline and a drive for excellence. That rigorous training has been the cornerstone of the lawyer I am today.

    After gaining valuable experience across different law firms and practice areas, what inspired you to take the leap and start your own law firm? What were some of the key challenges you encountered during the process of establishing your firm, and how did you overcome them?

    I always knew I had the skills and drive to start and manage my own law firm. While my career trajectory was steady and promising in my previous roles, the entrepreneurial itch was impossible to ignore. It was not just about ambition—it was about carving out my own space and building something from the ground up. So, when the moment felt right, I took the leap of faith.

    Starting out, the biggest challenge was managing expectations—both my own and those around me—and embracing the inherent uncertainty of going independent. The move from the steady comfort of a law firm job to the uncertainty of running my own practice was both challenging and exciting.

    I knew the key to survival and growth lay in two things: generating work and delivering results. So, I channeled all my energies into building trust with clients in the smallest of assignments, ensuring every case I handled spoke for itself and turning every challenge into an opportunity to prove myself. As someone from outside Delhi with a non-legal background, establishing a full-service law firm here, has been a proud achievement for me. The desire to excel as an outsider fuels my determination even further.

    You represent several prominent social media influencers, helping them navigate the legal complexities of the digital age. Could you share how the legal landscape for content creators has evolved, and how you support influencers in managing legal risks?

    Social media influencers are the celebrities of the digital age, and the legal landscape around them is evolving rapidly—touching everything from IT and IP laws to even fundamental rights. With their massive follower base, influencers have a unique power to shape public opinion, making their actions resonate far beyond their screens.

    My role is to help them navigate this complex terrain by ensuring they understand their rights, responsibilities and laws governing their space. The challenge lies in balancing freedom of speech with the legal and ethical boundaries of content creation. As online content becomes more unfiltered, conflicts are inevitable, and managing them goes beyond simply applying the law. I advise them on content and how to strike the right balance—protecting the integrity of their content while ensuring it doesn’t cross legal boundaries. In disputes, the focus shifts to safeguarding their fundamental right to free speech and the right of the public to have access to different perspectives.

    One of your notable cases involved defending a prominent youtuber against Dabur India Limited’s allegations related to a video critiquing. Could you elaborate on the approach towards this case and how you balanced freedom of expression with addressing the company’s concerns?

    This case highlighted the delicate balance between a content creator’s freedom of speech and the rights of others. For me, it was crucial to ensure that the YouTuber’s right to free expression wasn’t compromised. I was fortunate to work with a client who was not just willing but determined to fight for this right, recognizing its larger significance for creators and his audience.

    At the same time, I understood the importance of avoiding unnecessary litigation that could drain resources and prolong conflict—something neither the YouTuber nor the company wanted. The natural and necessary path was to pursue an amicable resolution.

    My focus was on preserving the educational value of the YouTuber’s video, which provided important insights on food and health to the public. After multiple rounds of rigorous negotiation from both sides, to achieve a settlement, we agreed to remove a few minor portions of the video that were the subject of the company’s IP disparagement claims, without prejudice to our client’s right to free speech. These changes did not affect the video’s core message or structure, allowing us to protect both the creator’s voice and the broader value of the content for society. This proposition was also acceptable to the Company, which led to a win-win situation for both sides.

    You have advised and represented clients in high-profile criminal cases, such as the CBI chargesheet concerning a PSU tender scam. What are the critical factors you focus on when advising clients in such complex criminal matters, and how do you approach preparing for these high-stakes cases?

    In criminal cases, even when companies stand accused, it’s the individuals who bear the weight, as the corporate veil often falls to reveal the human cost. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and this pressure is unlike anything else.

    My first priority is to extract every minute detail from the client about the case—no matter how trivial it may seem. In criminal law, even the smallest piece of information could turn out to be a smoking gun or a declaration of innocence.

    I also believe that it is equally important to manage expectations and give the client a realistic picture of the situation. Trust between client and counsel takes on a whole new level of significance in criminal matters. It’s not just about building a defense—it’s about standing calm and firm in the face of uncertainty, ensuring that every decision is informed and strategic. 

    A senior counsel once gave me advice I hold as gospel: to ensure the best defense, preparation must begin on day one. You should envision how the story ends for your client and craft the entire trial strategy around that vision.

    What advice would you give to aspiring lawyers who wish to follow a career path like yours? Additionally, could you recommend any resources that help them stay informed about the latest developments and trends in the legal field?

    Always see yourself as a student of law, not a master of law. The law evolves with society, and staying curious and adaptable is key. It’s just as crucial to understand your client’s needs as it is to understand the intricacies of a legal case. True innovation in legal practice comes when you bridge the gap between business realities and business laws. Equally, knowing how to connect with a judge’s perspective is vital. Sometimes, a case is not won by citing more precedents but by presenting solutions that create a win-win outcome.

    Another important skill worth developing is the art of networking—it’s all about fostering meaningful relationships that can provide fresh perspectives and open doors to many opportunities.

    For aspiring lawyers, staying updated and informed is easier than ever. Social media, news outlets and online legal platforms provide relevant updates on legal trends, making it simple to stay current. It is imperative to keep a close eye on these developments because a solid understanding of the world around you is essential—not just to stay updated but to offer sound advice to your clients.

    With your career balancing both high-profile legal work and professional responsibilities, how do you manage your work-life balance? What strategies or practices help you maintain personal growth and stay motivated to excel in such a demanding and fast-paced field?

    Speaking candidly, in our field—especially for independent practitioners—work-life balance often feels like a distant dream. However, with increasing awareness about its value, it’s worth making an effort to incorporate it, even in small ways. I personally am health conscious; I make it a point to monitor what I eat and stay consistent with my workouts to an extent, which keeps me disciplined and supports the demands of my rigorous professional life. During the court vacations, I like to travel. I also have a close-knit group of friends I regularly meet and spend time with.

    With over a decade of experience in the legal field, what was the initial inspiration that motivated you to pursue a career in law? 

    Honestly, I joined law school primarily because I didn’t want to pursue a career in medicine or engineering, as my parents had hoped. Convincing them that there could be a respectable career outside these two professions was challenging. However, with their blessings, it has turned out to be a better choice for all of us. 

    You began your professional journey in law during your final year of law school under the mentorship of Mr. A.P. Singh. How did this early exposure to infrastructure arbitration shape your career path, and what key lessons did you learn from working with him that have influenced your approach to legal practice? 

    For any professional, and particularly for a first-generation lawyer, mentorship is crucial in shaping their skills and understanding of the trade. While time and experience help hone one’s abilities, a professional’s approach often reflects the quality of mentorship they receive and the kind of people and environments they work with.

    I began my professional journey in the 4th year of law school under the guidance of my first mentor, Mr. A.P. Singh. I worked with him in my final year of college and continued after obtaining my degree and enrollment for over a year. Working with him provided my initial exposure to infrastructure arbitration, which became the foundation of my early practice—frequenting arbitration tribunals in venues like Neeti Bagh Club, India Habitat Centre, and five-star hotels more than the courts. This unique start gave me a different perspective on legal practice, which proved invaluable later. Mr. Singh has been a constant guide in my professional journey and continues to be so to this day.

    After your initial experience, you moved to Fox Mandal to gain experience at a law firm. Could you describe how your time there expanded your legal horizons, especially with regard to high-profile international arbitrations? 

    My time at Fox Mandal was immensely enriching, offering me the opportunity to work on high-profile, high-value international arbitrations and litigations. The experience of engaging in contests against magic circle firms significantly broadened my understanding of the global legal profession and deepened my knowledge of the complexities involved in cross-border disputes. In fact, I chose to decline higher paying job offers from Tier-1 law firms, opting to remain at Fox Mandal because of the exceptional quality of work and exposure it provided—an opportunity I deeply valued for its impact on my professional growth.

    Having worked in a smaller firm environment at Lotus Law Partners, how did this experience differ from working in larger firms like Fox Mandal? What specific aspects of working in a smaller firm did you find most beneficial for your development?

    My stint with Lotus Law Partners, led by Mr. Keshav Mohan, was brief but insightful. At the time, Mr. Mohan, counsel for Sahara Chief Mr. Subrata Roy, had recently gained prominence. Tragically, we lost him to the COVID pandemic. 

    In my experience, smaller offices foster stronger friendships and closer collaboration. They offer greater access to the overall strategy, as well as the finer details of decision-making processes, providing a more holistic understanding of legal practice. 

    Your time at Jaitley & Bakhshi must be pivotal in honing your leadership skills. Can you elaborate on how your role at the firm helped you develop the skills necessary to lead a team and understand corporate clients’ needs?

    There’s a significant difference between executing an assignment and effectively getting it executed by a team. The latter is a critical leadership skill that builds upon mastering the former. My time at Jaitley & Bakhshi challenged me to step into this role, helping me develop the ability to lead a team, manage responsibilities, and understand corporate clients’ needs from a leadership perspective. 

    What makes my tenure at Jaitley & Bakhshi more special is its personal connection to why I chose law in the first place—my admiration for Mr. Arun Jaitley. His charismatic oratory and debating skills left a lasting impression on me during my younger years. To work with his family office and have the opportunity for personal interactions with him was nothing short of a dream come true. I am deeply grateful to Sonali Jaitley and Jayesh Bakhshi, the firm’s partners, for their invaluable support and mentorship.

     In 2018, you made the bold decision to start your independent practice, Alt India Legal, despite being in a stable position. What motivated you to take this leap, and how did you prepare yourself for the transition from working within established law firms to running your own practice?

    My decision to start independent practice surprised many, given my stable professional and financial position at the time. However, I had come to realize that true growth only happens when you step outside your comfort zone. This belief motivated me to take the leap, and looking back, I’m glad I did. The transition from working within established law firms to running my own practice was undoubtedly challenging, but it has been incredibly fulfilling. Drawing on the experiences from my previous roles, I focused on building a practice that serves clients across key sectors, striving to deliver practical and effective solutions.

    Specializing in contractual and commercial disputes, employment litigation, insolvency, and infrastructure arbitrations, can you share an example of a particularly challenging case from your career, and how you navigated the complexities involved?

    There have been many challenging and interesting cases which are worth mentioning here but I would stick to a very recent case wherein the Supreme Court has agreed to consider the issue of lack of procedural guidelines in investigating the crime of fake/ counterfeit drugs being rampantly sold in Indian markets including private and government hospitals. 

    The background stems from the Supreme Court’s 2020 judgment in Union of India vs. Ashok Kumar & Ors. (AIR 2020 SC 5274), which removed the power of investigation in such cases from the police and entrusted it to drug inspectors. While the decision was well-intentioned, it has led to significant practical challenges. Drug inspectors, primarily functioning as licensing and regulatory authorities, lack the necessary wherewithal to investigate complex criminal activities.

    We are representing an association of 23 leading pharmaceutical companies in India, united in their fight against this menace. This case is not only about protecting the rights and business interests of these companies but, more importantly, about safeguarding the right to life of citizens. Counterfeit drugs pose a direct threat to consumers, who are often unaware they are the ultimate victims of such counterfeiting.

    Given your extensive career, what advice would you give to law students and young professionals aspiring to succeed in the legal field, particularly those interested in arbitration, insolvency, and corporate law?

    I understand that law schools have become more expensive, and students feel pressured to recoup these costs early in their careers. However, it’s important to approach the profession realistically and recognize that it differs from conventional jobs. My advice is to value mentorship and focus on acquiring the right skills—money is merely a by-product. Trust me, in the long run, this profession is financially rewarding and socially empowering. 

    Balancing the demands of managing your firm, practicing law, and personal commitments, how do you prioritize self-care and find time to unwind?

    Balancing the demands of managing my firm, practicing law, and personal commitments is undoubtedly challenging, especially given the constant urgency the profession demands. However, I recognize the importance of allocating time for health and family, making it a non-negotiable aspect of my life. I am fortunate to have a very supportive spouse, an adorable son, and very caring parents who constantly inquire about my health, much like the most diligent clients following up on their assignments.

    With over 10 years of experience in commercial litigation and arbitration, what initially inspired you to pursue a career in law, and how has your professional journey evolved over time?

    My parents were not from a legal background, and as such, the inspiration to take up law did not come from my immediate environment. However, during my formative years, I found that my acquaintances in the legal profession always displayed an unwavering sense of purpose. I also remember getting inspired by the views that Mr. Rajeev Dhavan, Senior Advocate, would express on public issues, all rooted in constitutional values, and without any fear of the popular opinion. This, coupled with a deep disinclination towards pursuing a career in engineering, made law a natural choice.

    During my time at NLIU Bhopal, I developed a particular interest in international arbitration, which is reflected in my dissertation on jurisdictional aspects of international investment arbitration. What truly drew me to this field was its dynamic nature and the intellectual challenge of navigating intricate commercial disputes.

    Over the years, my practice has evolved from focusing purely on arbitration to encompassing a broader spectrum of dispute resolution. My experience at Luthra & Luthra helped shape my approach to complex commercial litigation. When we started EP Advocates in 2020, I focused greatly on disputes involving insurance law and insolvency, which is something I had already extensively undertaken in the past as well. Now, my role as an Advocate-on-Record at the Supreme Court has added another dimension to that practice. The evolution has been organic, driven by a desire to provide comprehensive dispute resolution services to clients.

    You completed your LLM at Queen Mary University of London, specializing in International Commercial Arbitration among other areas, what drew you to this specialization, and how was your experience at the university?

    My choice to pursue an LLM at Queen Mary was deliberate, given its renowned reputation in international arbitration. QMUL and MIDS Geneva are the only programmes that I had applied for. The program’s focus on comparative and international dispute resolution perfectly aligned with my academic interests and professional aspirations. I particularly valued the exposure to diverse perspectives, studying under leading practitioners and scholars in the field. The experience was transformative – I graduated with distinction in my dissertation on ‘The Relevance of Local Remedies in ICSID arbitration,’ and the program’s practical approach to complex international disputes has significantly influenced my practice. The modules provided insights that I apply to this day.

    With respect to your current focus, could you share some of the most challenging disputes you’ve encountered and how you managed the complexities of those cases?

    Some of the recent disputes, where we have prevailed include: (i) in insolvency, we were able to negotiate a settlement for certain homebuyers whose rights had been extinguished by the Resolution Plan, when the matter was pending before the Supreme Court – the challenge was that the Resolution Plan had already been approved by the NCLT and NCLAT; and 

    (ii) in insurance, before an arbitral tribunal, we were able to successfully defend an insurance company against a commercial entity on the quantum of claims that had to be paid – the challenge for our team was more with respect to adopting the best strategy for our arguments, given that the case involved various issues of ‘industry practice’ and voluminous documentation.

    In these cases, and even otherwise, I have found that one does not have to ‘manage’ complexities, if they are avoided. I believe complexities can be avoided if:

    1. you can anticipate and discuss with your clients, the difficulties in their case, and explore the possible arguments and solutions;
    2. simplify the case, present facts and arguments in a manner that is holistic but concise, and do not present a complicated picture without a solution;
    3. stick to first principles throughout the case and justify your arguments and pleadings using those principles.

    Having worked with a leading law firm for over six years before establishing your own practice, what were some key lessons learned early in your career, and what motivated you to start your own firm?

    My six years at L&L Partners were instrumental in shaping my understanding of dispute resolution and law practice. Leading a young disputes team at the Mumbai office taught me invaluable lessons about team management, client relationships, and strategic dispute resolution. One key lesson was the importance of understanding not just the legal aspects, but also the commercial implications of every dispute for the client. The decision to establish my own practice stemmed from a desire to provide a more personalized service to clients. The experience of independently handling major mandates under the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code and leading significant arbitrations in areas of construction law gave me the confidence to take this step.

    What were some of the initial challenges you faced while founding your practice at EP Advocates, and how did you navigate them?

    Starting EP Advocates in 2020 came with its unique set of challenges. The primary challenge was establishing a new practice during the pandemic, which required adapting to remote working while maintaining the highest standards of legal service. We focused on building a lean, technology-driven practice that could deliver sophisticated legal solutions efficiently.

    Another significant challenge was transitioning from a large law firm setup to building systems and processes from scratch. However, this also presented an opportunity to implement modern practice management techniques and create a more agile organization. Within two years, we successfully built a strong client base including major entities like National Insurance Company Limited, Dish TV India Limited, BSNL, and NTPC Limited, validating our business model and approach.

    Given that you are an Advocate-on-Record before the Supreme Court of India, could you share with us some significant cases ?

    Being qualified as an Advocate-on-Record has been a significant milestone. Even prior to becoming an AOR, I was a part of teams that handled significant arbitration-related cases. One notable matter involved advising the Petitioner on issues relating to appointment of arbitrators given the inter-connected nature of several agreements, each of which had a separate arbitration clause. The judgment in that case is now a leading decision on appointment of arbitrators in international arbitrations under Section 11 of the Arbitration Act.

    Recent cases, as an Advocate-on-Record, have involved representing a leading bank in Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) filed by debtors challenging eventual court-ordered auction of properties. With respect to insolvency, I recently had the privilege of representing one of the impleadment parties in a Civil Appeal titled Ayush Agarwal v. Jaypee Infratech Limited & Others, where the Supreme Court’s intervention ensured that rights of certain active homebuyers did not get extinguished by a Resolution Plan.

    You have represented major clients in complex disputes. What are some unique legal challenges faced during long-drawn litigation, and how do you help navigate these?

    Long-drawn litigation presents multiple challenges, particularly in maintaining consistency in approach while adapting to evolving circumstances. One key challenge has been managing the intersection of public policy considerations with commercial interests.

    We help clients navigate these challenges through:

    1. regular strategic reviews and updates on regulatory changes;
    2. proactive risk assessment and mitigation strategies;
    3. maintaining clear communication channels.

    For instance, in insurance matters, we’ve developed specialized approaches for handling claims under various policies, from Standard Fire & Special Perils to Bankers’ Indemnity Policies, always keeping in mind the evolving regulatory landscape.

    What advice would you give to law students or young professionals aspiring to build a career in areas of insurance or insolvency law? How should they prepare to handle high-stakes disputes and gain expertise in this area?

    My advice would be threefold:

    First, develop a strong foundation in commercial laws. Understanding the business aspects is as crucial as knowing the legal provisions.

    Second, gain practical exposure through internships and hands-on experience. The field of insolvency law, in particular, requires understanding practical aspects of business operations. Insurance law requires a good understanding of how insurance companies handle claims, and what regulations apply, and one must know these irrespective of the side they appear for.

    Third, stay updated with evolving regulations and judicial interpretations. Both insurance and insolvency laws in India are rapidly evolving, and staying current is crucial.

    I would also emphasize the importance of developing strong analytical skills and the ability to handle pressure, as these areas often involve time-sensitive, high-stakes matters.

    With your extensive professional commitments, how do you manage to balance your personal life with the demands of your legal practice?

    Maintaining work-life balance in a demanding practice requires disciplined time management and efficient delegation. Technology has been a great enabler – we’ve implemented systems that allow for effective remote working while maintaining high service standards.

    I believe in building strong teams and empowering them to handle responsibilities effectively. This not only ensures better service delivery but also helps maintain a sustainable work environment. Regular team meetings and clear communication channels help manage workload efficiently.

    Additionally, I make it a point to stay involved in academic activities, such as conducting lectures at law schools. These activities provide a refreshing break from practice while contributing to the legal community.
